July Ward News

July has seen some changes to the Longthornton SNT team with the new policing model for the Met police being implemented. We now have a new SergeantLucy Mankelow, Sgt Mankelow has over 10 years experience within the force. She has worked in many different areas and will be responsible for both Longthornton and Figgs Marsh SNTs. PC Raoul Sebastian and PCSO Jodie Trenoweth will remain on Longthornton and are the dedicated ward officers. There are also several other Mitcham based officers who are available to assist PC Sebastian and PCSO Trenoweth . Crime rates for July show an 18% increase in overall crime from 56 reports last July to 68 this year. Burglaries having remained the same from July 2012 and 2013 at 4 and we did have 2 attempted burglaries as well. Motor vehicle crime has increase by 15% from 6 in July 2012 to 7 July 2013. Robberies have decreased by 75% from 4 last July to 1 this July. We have had an increase in criminal activity in Middle Way and would like to ask residents if they see any suspicious vehicles or activity in particular Mercedes vans to please either report it to police on 999 (if an emergency or crime in progress) 101 (police non-emergency number) or call 02087212742 if you have any information regarding number plates or descriptions of people involved. PC Sebastian has had several investigations this month, offences include making off with out payment, Fraud, possession of cannabis and criminal damage. At the start of July A/ PS Burke and PS Sebastian executed several warrants around Longthornton Ward targeting drug use, possession and dangerous dogs. All the Warrants had positive results. PCSOs Trenoweth and Kapuscinska have continued to patrol the ward carrying out reassurance visits to victims of crime and issuing letters informing residents about crime in their area. The PCSOs have dealt with stops for cannabis possession, street drinkers and bogus callers and also recovered a stolen van which was found on the ward with the help of local residents. This demonstrates that any information residents have no matter how small can assist officers in identifying and uncovering crimes which are being committed.

Collectors
"The MPS are currently running Project Killdeer which aims to raise awareness concerning illegal street collectors and attempts to ensure that charitable contributions reach the causes that they are intended for. It is estimated that 147 million is lost to charities through fraud each year. Quick and simple points to note for when you next contribute to a charity street collection. Street Collectors All charity collection bucket/tins MUST: 1) Display the name of the charity on the bucket/tin. 2) Be securely sealed. The collector must be in possession of written authority from the charity and also a permit issued by the MPS. If they do not have a permit they commit an offence. There are only certain days of the month that collections are allowed to take place and each charity is only allowed to collect once per year in any given local authority area. Therefore, if you see the same person collecting for the same charity more than once a month, they probably haven't got a permit! N.B. Train stations are subject to different legislation and hence the above does not apply. Should you feel that the charity street collectors are committing an offence please contact your local policing team. House to House
money from door to door pub to pub clothing or other items from door to door

It must be for charitable purposes and it is an offence to hold a collection without a licence. In the Metropolitan Police District licences are issued by the Charities Office. Controlled Drinking Zone

A borough-wide controlled drinking zone (CDZ) is now in effect across Merton, which the council has introduced to tackle alcohol related antisocial behaviour. in which there has been nuisance, annoyance or disorder associated with the consumption of alcohol. The new CDZ will mean that police and community support officers will be able to confiscate alcohol from people who are acting in a disorderly manner in public. Anyone who refuses to stop drinking alcohol in public or hand over their alcohol when asked, faces a fine and arrest. Why have a CDZ: To give enforcement officers the power to target areas of the borough where there is repeat and persistent It is a discretional power nuisance, clearly linked to public drinking of used by police that is not the alcohol intended to affect residents or visitors who cut down alcohol disturbances in like to enjoy a social drink related public or picnic in the park. cut down drunkenness in public places Signs have been put up around the borough to send a clear and inform people about the consistent message that anti-social drinking is not CDZ and what this acceptable and will not be means for them. tolerated in the boroughs Below is a copy of the signs being used.
