NC VOTERS EVENLY SPLIT ON HAGAN REELECT

Statistical Tie on Question of Whether or Not North Carolina Senator Deserves Another Term
Baton Rouge, La. Results of a statewide North Carolina survey released by Magellan Strategies BR show likely midterm voters even divided over U.S. Senator Kay Hagans reelection. When asked if Hagan had performed her job well enough to deserve another term, 41.4% supported her reelection (26% definitely reelect) while 42.6% felt that it is time to give a new person a chance (28% definitely new person). The 1.2% difference falls within the surveys margin of error. While any reelection number below 50% should be some cause for concern, Hagans current position puts her in a much better place than other Southern Democratic U.S. Senators up in 2014, said John Diez, Jr., Principal of Magellan Strategies BR. After being read a series of statements about Hagans support for key pieces of President Obamas agenda, respondents were asked again whether the U.S. Senator deserved reelection. The incumbents support falls to 37%. Based on her overall support for the Presidents agenda and, in particular, the 2009 stimulus plan and 2010 healthcare overhaul, at least half of the respondents were less likely to vote for Hagan. In addition, the survey shows that North Carolina continues to be a battleground state for the two parties. The Democratic candidate leads the Republican candidate by just over 2% (43.7% DEM/41.4% GOP) in a generic ballot test. When asked about which party currently best represents their political point of view, voters chose the Democratic by a slim 3% margin (44% DEM/41% GOP). Magellan Strategies BR surveyed 1,600 likely North Carolina voters between July 31 st and August 1st, 2013. The margin of error was 2.5% at a 95% confidence interval. This survey was not authorized or paid for by any campaign or political organization. The survey was conducted using automated telephone technology. Survey toplines are included below. ###
