Bios Beep Codes for the xw8000 Workstation

When your system starts up, the system firmware performs pre-boot diagnostics to test your hardware configuration for any problems. If a problem is detected during pre-boot, the system e-buzzer will emit audible beeps and an encoded error message. The e-buzzer emits a different number of beeps for each type of error. The sequence may start with a modem-like sound lasting about three seconds, followed by a number of clear beeps, or the e-buzzer may simple emit clear beeps. The e-buzzer detects the following errors:

Screen Message 1998Master Boot Record has been changed Probable Cause The current MBR does not match the previously saved copy of the MBR. Step Recommended Action 1 Use extreme caution. The MBR might have been updated due to normal disk maintenance activities (disk manager, fdisk, or format). Replacing the previously saved MBR in such situations can cause data loss. If certain that the MBR change is unintentional and undesired (for example, due to a virus), run Computer Setup and restore the previously saved MBR copy. Otherwise, run Computer Setup and either disable MBR security or save the MBR of the current bootable disk.

A Word of Caution when using the HP Insight Diagnostic CD

Please use the HP Insight Diagnostic CD with caution. During a small-scale test it was found that the diagnostic passed 95% of failed components, and properly failed only 5% of these components. Therefore be aware that a failed component will likely pass the diagnostic tests. However, if the diagnostic does in fact fail a component, proceed with confidence that the component has been correctly diagnosed and should be replaced. An additional use for the diagnostic, is to provide a detailed snapshot of the hardware components detected within the system as seen below:
