a Consultora Salzgitter,

Introduction

Within the course of the study of the theoretical and technical hydroelec
trical potential of Peru it was realized that the data compi led for the existing streai
flow and rainfall measuring stations, and the maps prepared showing their respective
locations, would be of considerable benefit to other water related sectors. As a result
it was decided to prepare annexes to the main report, containing such information.
The studies of the hydroelectric
potential of Peru were effected over the
period October 1976 to March 1979. The project was carried out in conjunctionwith
the Ministry of Energy and Mines by the consortium of consulting engineers lahmeyer
International
GmbH and Salzgitter Consult.
The project was jointly funded by a tech
nical assistance grant administered on behalf of the West German Government
by the
GTZ and by a loan from the World Bank.
The atlas contained in this volume represents a revision and amplification
of the Atlas de Cuencas Hidrogrficas del Per published by SENAMHI in 1972.lt was
compiled by members of the study group in collaboration
with personnel of SENAMHI
(Servicio Nacional de Meteorologa e Hidrologa) and ONERN (Oficina Nacional de
Evaluacin de Recursos Naturales)

While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the informa
tion presented it was not possible within the terms of the above project to make 10c01
verifications.
Indeed, the present atlas and associated station lists (Volume V)
are
presented as working documents with the express intention that they should be contin
ually updated in the light of new and better information as it becomes available.
Te
this end it is hoped that future users will communicate any improvements or
refinements to this office on a regular basis.

Description

of the maps

The maps included in this atlas indicate the limits of the basin, the river
system and the location of all known hydrometric and pluviometric measuring stations.
Existing water diversions between river basins are also shown.
The divisions into separate river basins and the associated
coding system
are based, with minor modifications,
on those previously adopted by SENAMHI,
and
are illustrated in Fig. lA. In general each map covers one river basin but in some
instances it was necessary to divide large basins into two or more sections. Additional
Iy, some large river systems have been sub-divided to faci litate the mathematical mOd
elling carried out during the study of hydroelectric
potential in these cases the basi
code is followed by a capital letter.
For river basins in the Pacific Watershed
the
mapshavescalesof
1 :500,000.or
1: 1,000,000
scales of 1: 1,000,000
and
1 : 2,000 ,000 have been used for the watersheds of the Atlantic and Lake Titicaca.
The scales used are i lIustrated in Fib. lB.
In the majority of cases the location of both hydrometric .and
pluvio
metric stations are shown on the same map, but where the density of stations is relativ
ely high separate maps are included.
Where a particular rainfall station les outside
any defi ned river basi n, i t has been shown on the map of the closest.
The symbols used in the maps are shown in Fig. 2. Hydrometric
stations
are represented by a rectangle and pluviometric stations by a circle a black symbol
indicates that historie data for the station is included in the project data bank while
a white symbol indicates that no data has been encountered to date.
Each station is identified by an unique number which refers to the code of
the station within that river basin this system was used to avoid clarity problems
if
the normal six figure codes were employed.
In order to identify stations
reference
should be rnade to the .station lists included in Volume V, which detail all pertinentin
formation avai lable regarding each station in terms of physical and data characteris
tics. This Volume also contains chronograms showing the historie records available at
the date of publication.

RESUMEN DE LAS CARACTERISTICAS DE LAS CUENCAS

Las pginas siguientes resumen las principales caractersticas

fsicas

Summary of River Basin Characteristics

The following pages summarize the major physical characteri stics of the
individual river basins studied during evaluation of the hydroelectric
potential of Pe
ru. The physical quantities given are those resulting from the individual
representa
tions used for the mathematical modelling of mean streamflows.
The procedure for defining these models and the application of the comp
uter programs HYMOD and HYDAL are explained in Volume 11. Basically, each riversystem is divided into river reaches of nominal 10 km. length, and the topographic pa
rameters associated with each determined on the basis of the smallest scale maps avail
able.
In addition, the tables indicate the total number of measuring stations in each
basin and overall parameters of the model representation.
It should be noted that the
total areas given may differ from other estimates; this is because in cases where rivers
emanate in other countries it was necessary to inelude these catchment areas for model
ling purposes. On the other hand, some coastal tracts lie outside the limits of any d;
fined river basin.
