BU SI N E S S C H A L LE N G E
In todays IT world, efficient monitoring, 24x365 uptime, and optimized performance are critical for success. As companies aim to use a variety of technologies to meet their needs, the complexity of their systems increases. They need a cost-effective, common management tool to tie everything together and provide seamless integration between different systems and products.

Ensures availability iSeries and AS/400 systems and applications will be up and running Minimizes downtime and reduces administration time automated user-supplied recovery actions take over when thresholds are exceeded, for example:

PATROL for iSeries from BMC Software automates repetitive monitoring tasks to reduce the burden on system administrators, increase management efficiency, and maximize availability in iSeries-AS/400 environments. PATROL monitors critical aspects of iSeries and AS/400 from a single console, ensuring consistent management across the diverse platforms in your organization (iSeries, Unix, Microsoft Windows, etc.).

Restart critical server jobs Restart controllers Selectively reply to messages Move jobs if assigned to unproductive job queues

P R O A C T I V E M O N IT O R I N G
PATROL for iSeries provides an easy-to-use graphic view of all monitored systems. Realtime graphs and color-coded icons provide a current view of your systems. Administrators can specify thresholds for iSeries-AS/400 objects. Alarm values and actions enable you to easily detect and react to problems or events of interest on your systems. These settings can be configured either globally or individually for all monitored objects. PATROL maintains a comprehensive history of these objects, allowing review and analysis of past performance and availability.

>

Reports and monitors availability and performance of critical iSeries-AS/400 components and objects Provides remote, concurrent monitoring of multiple systems from a single Console Easily extends monitoring to other OS/400 objects through user customization

IN T E G R AT I O N
PATROL for iSeries works hand-in-hand with other PATROL applications, providing an extensible framework on which to deploy future Knowledge Modules from BMC Software, Third Party Vendors, or users.

System Monitor overall system-wide metrics, including total and interactive CPU utilization, average interactive response time, and transaction rate. Active jobs Monitor resource usage (CPU, I/O, etc.) and status information for individual jobs of interest, or groups of jobs. You can select jobs for monitoring using a combination of attributes including name, user, group profile, subsystem, status, and type. Alarms and recovery actions can be set when too many jobs exceed a CPU threshold or a job transitions to an unwanted state. Reports show Top 10 CPU Usage or jobs matching a userspecified status. Message queues Trap, view, and take action (such as email notification, pager, etc.) for messages of interest arriving on QSYSOPR or other specified message queues. Reply features provide manual or automatic answering of inquiry messages arriving on the queue.

>

History Log (QHST) Detect and react to messages sent to the History Log which match user-specified selection criteria. Out-of-the-box tracking of abnormally ended jobs and system value changes is provided. Network Status (NETSTAT) Monitor status and traffic information for each interface, and status for each route. Overall counts and lists of connections are available, as well as information on specific connections that match user-specified local port, remote address, and/or connection type values. Integrated File System (IFS) Monitor count and size information for user-specified directories, sub-directories, and objects located in the IFS. Scan directories for large objects. Libraries Monitor individual libraries to track and react to size changes or request reports that show current size and object counts for the libraries on your system.

Job Queues Monitor individual job queues for status (held, unassigned, etc.) and number of jobs queued. System-wide job queue counts and reports are available allowing easy detection of job submission to nonproductive queues. Subsystems Monitor number of active jobs and status information for all active subsystems. Subsystems can be started or ended. Recovery actions can be set to detect when a critical subsystem goes inactive and restart it. Configuration Descriptions Monitor individual or groups of configuration descriptions matching user-specified criteria to detect and react to unwanted states or lack of availability. Objects Monitor size and count information for objects matching user-specified type, name and library values. PATROL can easily be configured to react to objects that become too large or are deleted from the system. ASPs Monitor space utilization, I/O rates, I/O sizes, and reports showing busy, failed, and all disk arms for each ASP. Alarms and actions can be set for high space utilization or disk failure. Main storage pools Monitor fault, page, and transitions for each pool. Batch jobs Monitor number of batch jobs running, waiting, ending, and held. Users Monitor number of users signed on, temporarily signed off, suspended, and signed off.
