During our 2013-2014 season of cultural events, Salem College seeks
to engage, educate and inspire through the fne arts; scholarship and
discussion; the written and spoken word; and performances of all kinds,
from music to dance.
Salem College has been educating women for more than 240 years. Today we ofer
undergraduate majors and minors for young women; graduate programs in education
for both men and women; and a range of degree, certifcate and non-degree programs
for women and men ages 23 and older through the Fleer Center for Adult Education.
We are proud to present a wide variety of events each year including authors,
performing arts programs, music recitals and art exhibits by distinguished artists, as
well as by our faculty and students.

Model United Nations program. They will
outline how the lessons gained from this
endeavor are contributing to their educational

Terrorism and Miranda Rights
Thursday, September 19, at 4:30 p.m.
Library Assembly Room, Gramley Library
Members of the faculty of the Department
of History and Political Science will outline
the contemporary application of principles
relevant to the American Constitution to
current events and issues. In particular,
the discussion this year will focus on the
issue of terrorism and Miranda rights: Is
an act of terror a crime or an act of war?
The panel will present diverse views on
the constitutional debate that this issue has
generated.

visionary educational pioneer, Bishop John

Developing Emerging Professionals
Keynote Event
Saturday, September 21, Keynote Address: 7:30 p.m.
Salem College will again welcome Triad-area college students to its campus for an event that
provides opportunities to learn and practice many of the skills critical to building a successful
career in todays highly competitive and ever-changing marketplace. This one-day conference
aims to foster relationships among Salem College, the Center for Women in Business, local
female professionals and students from area academic institutions.

The evening keynote event is open to the community and dedicated to the theme Lean In,
based on the New York Times bestseller by Sheryl Sandberg. It will feature a panel of Women
CEOs from around the country and from varying professional disciplines in for- and not-for
proft organizations. As members of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) these women
are dedicated to continuing the international conversation started by Sandberg in her book
and website, Leanin.org. Through telling their stories, they aim to give young women ongoing
inspiration and support to lean into their careers, pursue their ambitions and achieve their goals.

BOOKMARKS Festval of Books
Saturday, September 7, 10:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
Downtown Arts District, Sixth and Trade Streets
BOOKMARKS brings writers and readers
of all ages together as renowned authors,
illustrators, storytellers and chefs share
their work and insights through readings,
presentations, panel discussions, workshops
and book signings. This free festival partners
with community organizations, reading-
related exhibitors and a variety of food
vendors. The ninth annual festival will
feature more than 30 authors along with
creative and interactive activities for children.

McPherson, Sheila Bair and Rachel
Renee Russell.

Saffron Cross is the love story of Dana, a
Baptist minister, and Fred, a devout Hindu
and former monk. The two meet on
eHarmony and begin a sometimes daunting
but ultimately inspiring journey of interfaith
relationship and marriage. Trents compelling
vignettes, often hilarious and refreshingly
honest, offer readers a glimpse into the
challenges of bringing together two vastly
different spiritual paths into one household.
Trent is a freelance writer, nonproft
consultant and adjunct faculty member in the
Triangle area of North Carolina.

Erin Gruwell: The Original Freedom Writer
Empowering Students,
Faculty and the Community
Tuesday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m.
Reception and book signing follows the talk.
Erin Gruwell has earned an award-winning reputation for her steadfast commitment to
the future of education. In 2007, Paramount Pictures released Freedom Writers, starring
Oscar winner Hilary Swank as Erin. The flm is based on The Freedom Writers Diary, the
New York Times bestseller that chronicled Gruwells extraordinary journey with 150 high
school students who were discounted by the education system.
By fostering an educational philosophy that valued and promoted diversity, she
transformed her students lives. She encouraged them to re-think rigid beliefs about
themselves and others, and ultimately re-chart their futures. With Gruwells support,
they chose to forego teenage pregnancy, drugs and violence, to become aspiring college
students, published writers and citizens for change. They dubbed themselves the
Freedom Writers in homage to Civil Rights activists, called The Freedom Riders.
Gruwell founded the Freedom Writers Foundation and published in the Freedom Writers
Diary Teachers Guide from which she currently instructs teachers around the country how
to implement her lesson plans into their own classrooms. Proceeds from the sale of her
books directly fund the Freedom Writers Foundation.
Gruwell and her students have appeared on numerous television shows, including Oprah,
Prime Time Live with Connie Chung, The View and Good Morning America. Their story has
earned them dozens of awards, including the Spirit of Anne Frank Award.

BOOKMARKS Presents

Thursday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m.
Lee Smith is the author of 16 books
of fction, including the bestselling
novels Fair and Tender Ladies and The Last
Girls, winner of the Southern Book Critics
Circle Award.
Her new book, Guests on Earth, centers
on Evalina Toussaint, the orphaned child
of an exotic dancer in New Orleans.
She is just 13 when she is admitted
to Highland Hospital in Asheville,
N.C. The year is 1936, and the mental
hospital is under the direction of the
celebrated psychiatrist Robert S. Carroll,
whose program of treatment for mental
and nervous disorders and addictions is based on exercise, diet, art,
occupational therapiesand experimental shock therapy. Guests on
Earth is a mesmerizing novel about a time and a place where creativity
and passion, theory and medicine, fact and fction, are beautifully
intertwined by a writer at the height of her craft.

Author Ayana Mathis: The Twelve Tribes of Hate
Tuesday, September 17, at 7:30 p.m.
Ayana Mathis is a graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop, where
she also has served as a guest faculty member, and is a recipient
of the Michener-Copernicus Fellowship. The Twelve Tribes of
Hattie, her frst novel and a New York Times Bestseller, was chosen
as the second selection for Oprahs Book Club 2.0. Mathiss
extraordinary frst novel tells the story of an unforgettable
familyand an indomitable womancaught in a singular
moment in American history. Hatties children, her tribes, are the
children of the Great Migration. Their lives, captured here in 12
distinct and soaring narrative threads, tell the story of a mothers
monumental courage and the journey of a nation.

Penelope Niven, the critically-acclaimed
author of Carl Sandburg: a Biography; Steichen: a
Biography; and Swimming Lessons, will return to
Salem for the paperback release of Thornton
Widler: A Life, published by HarperCollins and
praised by Edward Albee as a splendid and
long-needed work. Carl Sandburg: Adventures
of a Poet, her biography for children, has been
awarded an International Reading Association
Prize for exceptionally distinguished literature
for children, one of six books honored among
publications from 99 countries. She is also co-
author, with actor James Earl Jones, of Voices and
Silences, praised as a classic on acting. Niven
served as Salem Colleges writer-in-residence for
12 years until her retirement. She is the recipient
of fellowships from the National Endowment
for the Humanities and the Thornton Wilder
Visiting Fellowship at the Beinecke Library at
Yale and was awarded the North Carolina Award
in Literature, the states highest civilian honor,
for her work as a writer and a teacher.

Friday, September 27, at 7:30 p.m.

As Salem College and the wider regional organ community
celebrate the restoration and renovation of the 1965 Flentrop
organ in Shirley Recital Hall, Salems organ professor, Timothy
Olsen, begins a series of events featuring the magnifcent Flentrop
organ in a solo recital. The program will include works by Bach,
Pachelbel, Zipoli, and others that were played on the instruments
original dedication recital by Fenner Douglass in 1965.

The legendary pianist Frank Glazer will return to Salem College
as guest artist-in-residence for a memorable recital and master
class. Frequently called a national treasure and one of the
piano worlds most distinguished statesmen of the piano, Glazers
career spans nine decades of play on the international stage, with
many of the worlds greatest orchestras. This celebratory recital
will include Beethovens Op.
109 and the Op. 77 Fantasia,
Barbers Excursions, and Liszts

Monday, November 18, 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m.
World-renowned futist and teacher Leone Buyse returns to
perform with her long-time friend, pianist Barbara Lister-Sink,
and Salems own Debra Reuter-Pivetta. Buyse, former acting
principle futist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is highly
sought after for recitals, concerti and leading music festivals
throughout the world. Recognized as one of Americas foremost
fute pedagogues, she is currently Mullen Professor of Flute at Rice
University, and also has taught at the University of Michigan, New
England Conservatory, Boston University, and the Tanglewood
Music Center, among others. In 2010, Buyse received the Lifetime
Achievement Award from the American Flute Association.

Salem organ professor Timothy Olsen teams up with his organ/
trumpet duo partner and UNCSA colleague Judith Saxton,
trumpet artist faculty and brass area coordinator, for a program
of kaleidoscopic colors drawn from the newly-renovated 1965
Flentrop organ and various trumpets and mutes.

Marshall Chapman, a graduate of Salem Academy, released her
newest album, Blaze of Glory, in May. She has released 12 critically
acclaimed albums, and her songs have been recorded by everyone
from Emmylou Harris to Jimmy Buffett. She has toured extensively
and opened shows for a variety of artists, including John Prine,
Jimmy Buffett, Jerry Lee Lewis and The Ramones.

In 2010, she landed her frst movie role, playing Gwyneth Paltrows
road manager in Country Strong. In February, her musical, Good Ol
Girls (adapted from the fction of Lee Smith and Jill McCorkle,
featuring songs by Matraca Berg and Marshall) opened off-
Broadway. Chapman simultaneously released a book, They Came to
Nashville, and a CD, Big Lonesome.

Chapmans books and albums have won numerous awards. They
Came to Nashville was nominated for the 2011 SIBA Book Award
for nonfction. The Philadelphia Inquirer named Big Lonesome Best
Country/Roots Album of 2010, while Paste Magazine called it her
masterpiece. In addition to numerous awards for her albums and
books, Marshall also has written for Nashville Arts Magazine, The
Oxford American, Southern Living and Performing Songwriter.

An evening of music, poetry and dance to
celebrate Spain! This interdisciplinary project
will combine the talents of Salem College
professors and students in guitar, voice,
piano, dance and Spanish language. Featured
composers will include De Falla, Granados,
Obradors and Sor.
SALEM SINGS!
Fall Choral Concert

The Salem Chamber Choir, Chorale and
SuperTonix will bring a choral experience
that spans the Medieval period to the 21st
century. World music, Pergolesi, Brahms and
Debussy will highlight this fall concert. The
SuperTonix will sing music from current
performers, such as Adele, and music from
the jazz and pop eras of past decades. The
choirs are conducted by Dr. Sonja Sepulveda
and accompanied by Carmine Mann.

The SHE Created IT dance
organization, led by Ursula Kendall
and supported by Salem College dance

workshop, performance and brunch.
Workshop registration begins at
9:30 a.m. on September 28, in Hanes
Auditorium with classes meeting 10:00
a.m. 3:00 p.m. A performance
featuring female choreographers and local dance instructors begins at 7:30 p.m. and

Mangum: Life Retrospectve

This exhibition of drawings, paintings and
sculpture honors William Goodson Bill
Mangum for his years of service to his
students and the art community. Mangum
was born in Kinston, N.C., scion of an
Orange County, N.C., family. During World
War II, he few as a member of a B-24
bomber crew with the 8th Air Force in
England. After the war, Bill studied at the
Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C.,
the Art Students League of New York and
obtained an MFA in art history from UNC.
He also studied and taught at the University
of Florence, Italy. For 30 years, Mangum was
the chairman of the art department at Salem
College. He is also a founding member of
ArtWorks Gallery and Associated Artists,
both in Winston-Salem. He has exhibited in
NYC, North Carolina and Europe.

Join the adventures of three late-19th-century
Victorian women explorers as they set off
on an odyssey to chart the unknown and
mysterious Terra Incognita. Inspired by the
lives of real-life, adventure-seeking women
who wanted to lead the kinds of lives usually
reserved for men, these three fctional
ladies gradually discover that they are not
only traveling in traditional unchartered
territories, but they are also traveling
through time as well. What will happen to
these three spirited, humorous, brilliant and
stalwart trekkers? All will be revealed in this
marvelous, imaginative voyage. Directed by
Michael Kamtman.

This group of Ukrainian photographers,
also called the 4 in 1, joined their efforts
through active memberships in the Ukrainian
Photographic Alternative in 2011. The group
has exhibited work at the Diplomat gallery
in Philadelphia, Pa. In November 2012, their
second big project, the Flow, took place
at the Art Center Ya Gallery, Kiev, Ukraine.
The Flow project was accompanied by the
book of the same name being published
in Ukraine. The Flow exhibit represents
the artists view on photography as well
as on subjective topics such as beauty and
perception of the environment. Its deliberate
lack of defned theme aims to convey the
idea of unlimited seeing; being in the state
of fow, where plenty of possibilities exist
for interpreting and understanding the
visible. Without any fnal goal and linkage
to certain context, to shot and to layer the
photos on each other as empty baskets in the
supermarket, 200 items.
Some works in this exhibit may contain
mature content.

Twelve Angry Women

The personalities of 12 jurors come to life
when they are chosen to determine the fate
of a 19-year-old boy who has just stood trial
for the fatal stabbing of his father. It looks
like an open-and-shut caseuntil one of the
jurors begins opening the others eyes to the
facts. The discussion becomes personal, with
each juror revealing his or her own character
as the various testimonies are re-examined,
the murder is re-enacted and a new murder
threat is born before their own eyes!

Christmas Candlelight Service

The Salem College Choirs, directed by Sonja

futist Debra Reuter-Pivetta and Donna
Rothrock, director of the Moravian Brass
Band, starts your Christmas season off with music to warm the heart. This traditional
service features Salem College chaplain Rev. Dr. Amy Rio-Anderson delivering inspiring
words of the season, along with student readers sharing the Christmas story. The service
ends with the beautiful lights of Moravian candles and everyone singing Christmas
hymns. Come and celebrate with us!
