dl Nature has provided every living creature with some way to protect itself. One of the most fascinating means of protection is deception; (7) , the ability the animal has to camouflage itself so that it will be overlooked by its enemy. Take, (8) , the chameleon, a member of the lizard family. it varies in length from five inches to a foot and can generally be found sitting on a leaf or twig. You must look closeSy to see the animal (9) its clever camouflage technique is to change its skin cotour to green or yellow if it is on a leaf and to brown or grey if it is on a twig or stone. (10) , the chameleon can sit very still, as a result of which its natural enemies can walk right by without noticing it. As you can see, the chameleon can easily fool its enemies by means of deception, and (11) it has a longer life and a better chance of reproducing its species. 243

Chinese differs from English in several ways and these differences make learning English difficult for the Chinese. First the most complex difference is the word order. For example in English a greeting is "How are you?" but in Chinese 'You are how?" is correct. Next in Chinese the verbs don't have past tense. Instead we know the time from the adverb. In English however time is designated by the tense. Besides these basic problems Chinese and English have many small differences. Chinese for instance does not distinguish between 'he' and 'she' nor is there a difference between kia' and 'an' as there is in English. Santa Fe is one of the oldest cities in the United States and it is also one of the most interesting. Some historians claim that St. Augustine a city in Florida is older but all agree that northern New Mexico has been continuously inhabited for centuries. Perhaps you have read about this old city or perhaps you have even visited Santa Fe. Every year thousands of visitors attend the annual Fiesta for this ancient celebration is as well-known in its way as is the Mardi-gras festival in New Orleans. It is not a carnival precisely nor is it a country fair. Rather it is a combination of the two and the narrow streets of the old city are thronged for three days with native New Mexicans Indians and tourists from all parts of the country.
