IV SEMESTER MECHANICS OF SOLIDS-I
(Effective from the admitted batch 200809)

Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks. Answer all units choosing one question from each unit. All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only. Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------UNIT-I 1. A steel tie rod 40 mm in diameter and 2 m long is subjected to a full of 100 kN. To what length the rod should be bored centrally with a bore of 20 mm diameter, so that the total extension will increase by 20 percent? Take E = 200 GPa
OR

2. A copper rod of 40 mm diameter is surrounded tightly by a cast iron tube of 80 mm external diameter, the ends being firmly fastened together. Calculate the sharing of load when subject to a compressive load of 30 kN. Also calculate the decrease in length of the composite system if it is 2 m long. Take Ecu = 75 GPa and ECI = 175 GPa UNIT-II 3. A beam of 8 m length is simply supported at its ends. It carries a uniformly distributed load of 20 KN/m run over the length of left half of its span, together with concentrated load of 20, 40 and 20 KN situated at 1,2 and 3 m respectively from right hand support. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for this beam and find out the magnitude and position of the maximum bending moment taking place in this beam

OR

4. Draw the S.F. and B.M. diagrams for the 5 m long simply supported beam carrying uniformly distributed load of 2 KN/m over the entire length and a point load of 2 KN at the middle. UNIT-III 5. What are the assumptions made in simple theory of bending? Derive relation between bending moment and bending stress
OR

6. Derive an expression for shear stress distribution across a rectangular section 12 UNIT-IV 7. An elemental cube is subjected to tensile stresses of 50N/mm2 and 30N/mm2 acting on two mutually perpendicular planes and a shear stress of 20N/mm2 on these planes. Draw the Mohrs circle of stresses and hence or otherwise find the magnitudes and direction of principal stresses and also the greatest shear stress
OR

8. A rectangular block of material is subjected to a tensile stress of 100 N/mm2 on one plane and a tensile stress of 60 N/mm2 on a plane at right angle, together with shear stresses of 45 N/mm2 on the same plane. Find: a) The direction of principal planes b) The magnitude of the principal stress c) The magnitude of the greatest shear stress UNIT-V 9. A hollow shaft, having an internal diameter 40% of its external diameter, transmits a power of 500 KW at 100 R.P.M. Determine the external diameter of the shaft if the shear stress is not to exceed 60 N/mm2 and the twist in a length of 3 m should not exceed 1.5 degrees. Assume Maximum Torque is equal to 1.25 times the Mean torque and Modulus of Rigidity = 8104 N/mm2
