Dear Parents, This unit study covers Chemistry for Grade 7. There is a resource list on page 130 of Properties of Matter. I encourage you to borrow a few more books on the list to use throughout the unit along with suggested videos. Please read pages i to vi to acquaint yourself with the book. Not every lesson will be covered in the book. You have the kit for six weeks, or 30 school days. If you do one lesson a day you will complete the unit. If you do more than one lesson per day you can complete the optional lessons. Each lesson has an experiment component. Please assemble the required materials ahead of time; they are listed at the beginning of each lesson in the book and there is a master list on page 131. Experiments in the Parent Guide have a list of materials as well. This kit includes some equipment, but not all of the household items. In some lessons you can choose to do the experiment in the book or the one in parent guide. Students learn best by doing and most of these experiments are a lot of fun! Plan ahead so you can reap the benetsand keep the camera handy! Have your student create a chemistry notebook. You can photocopy the student pages in the book or have them write their answers in their notebook. The quizzes are optional, but are good for portfolios. There are student pages that go with the experiments in the parent guide. If they have not been included, please visit the library website to download them.

Parent Guide - Messing with Mixtures alternate experiment p. 49 - 57 Materials: 2 bowls 1 strainer 1/4 cup salt 1/4 cup sand 1/4 cup beans 1 cup water Newspapers Large stirring spoon Parent should read over Background Information, Management and Procedure in Messing with Mixtures. Guided Instruction Day 1 Use page 56, Connecting Learning, to ask questions. 1. Have the child combine the water, salt, sand and beans together in a bowl. 2. Ask him to think of ways to separate the ingredients of his mixture to get back the four original substances. Make a list of suggestions. 3. Discuss how to remove the beans first. Explain that one way used in industry to separate mixtures is called filtration. Use a strainer to filter out the beans. Set aside. 4. Ask the child to identify the remaining ingredients and discuss how they could be further separated. Record all suggestions. Put mixture aside where it will not be disturbed. Day 2 Refer to page 56. 1. Have child observe the mixture. They should notice that the sand has settled to the bottom. It should be possible to pour off the salt water into the other bowl. This process is called settling and is also used in industry to get rid of some of the denser, undesirable materials. 2. Discuss ideas of how to separate the salt from the water and record suggestions. 3. The last stage of separation involves either evaporation or distillation. Both of these processes involve turning the water to vapor and leaving the salt behind. Evaporation: Place the bowl in a safe, warm place. Check on it daily and mark the level of water on the cup until all that is left is the salt. Distillation: Heat the salt water mixture in a saucepan. Trap some of the escaping water vapor in the lid, let it cool and condense and pour it off the lid into a cup to show the child. When the water has evaporated, have the child examine the residue. Discuss the Connecting Learning questions on pg. 57 of the parent guidebook. experiment can be adapted to whatever you may have on hand. 7 This

Put the12 Solution Station labels and with the solutions. To make the separate solutions from the powders, mix the washing soda, pickling lime, baking soda, and cream of tartar with distilled water in a three to one ratio (three parts water to one part powder or juice). Rinse the eyedropper out in between solutions or your results will not be accurate. Follow the procedures as outlined on pg. 166 and record your results on student pages 171 and 172. MIXED REACTIONS - Modications Use the six labels for the stations. READ: Procedures and prepare data sheet to form a booklet. For each station have a small cup with 2 tbsp. of the liquid in it and a teaspoon for the dry ingredient. Students take the temperature before adding the dry ingredient Add one teaspoon of the dry ingredient observe changes & take temperature. Wash the teaspoon and thermometer before using them for the next station. Graph you data on student page 180. Lesson 26 Identification of Unknown Substances

Parent Guide - Mystery Reactions P. 174 - Modifications Use the blue station cards as the testing cards or a vinyl placemat. Containers are numbered, be sure to put the correct substance in each one. These substances are not included. You can use substitutions found at home (be sure they are safe!). Please wash the containers when you are done.
