Remedial measure: Show students pictures of different types of herbs and shrubs. Ask them to identify the features that can differentiate a herb from a shrub. Ask them to classify the plants around their house or school into herbs, shrubs and trees. The question was designed to test if students can identify the correct statement about the classification of animals. Students may have built certain mental models about animals and think that birds and animals are different categories. They might have heard the term 'animal' being used for a certain group of animals, like lion, tiger, monkey etc. And so any organism that does not fit into that model of 'animals' - having four legs or eating other animals, may not be classified as an animal. Remedial measure: Biological classification has been developed after an extensive study of organisms on Earth. The basis of this classification is subtle and it is developed in such a way that it accommodates all species of organisms, and covers the vast diversity of life. Help students to appreciate that scientific classification is different and more sophisticated than common perception.
