Preventive Weeds Management for Corn Production in the Kalinga Upland: An Extension Program of Kalinga Apayao State College This extension project focused on improving farmers productivity and profitability through preventive weeds management reducing weed population to levels that will not significantly reduce crop yield due to vulnerable climate change which has encouraged weed and pest proliferation that threatens food supply. It was initially implemented in 5 sites with 8 farmer-partners from 4 municipalities of Kalinga on 2007 and terminated in 2009 with 6 farmers group involving 62 farmer-members. It aspired to address weeds constraints limiting corn production through partnership, capacity enhancement, capital sourcing, strengthening farmers organization and sustainability. It operates on the premise of serving farmers understand problems and, sharing knowledge, capacity building and learn to tap institution for linkages. Corn yield increased by more than 1 ton/ha (3.5-4 tons to 4.71 to 6.35 tons/ha) and increased income of P15,000/ha during rainy season and P25,000/ha during dry season due to the adoption of preventive weeds management and used of high yielding crop from previous income and had reduced dependency on herbicide . Most of all, the bayanihan of farmers had reduced their capital needs . After project termination, the initial farmers groups increased and up-scaled to 6 farmers groups from 4 municipalities 62 farmer-members with 66 hectares. In conclusions, the project strategies and linkaging was of great help in increasing productivity, profitability, capacity enhancement and sustainability having involved the farmer all throughout the program; increased knowledge of farmers are now circulating among them resulting to higher income. It was also found out that farmers are willing to take risks when they are fully convinced with a technology regardless of its simplicity or complexity.
