1. (a) The three forces and a couple M, as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 1(a), are applied to an angle bracket. Find the
moment of the couple if the line of action of the resultant of the force system is to pass through (i) Point A (ii)
Point C.
(b) A thin ring of mass 2 kg and radius r =14 mm is held
against a frictionless wall by a 125 mm string AB, as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 1(b). Determine (i) the distance d
(ii) the tension in the string (iii) the reaction at C.
2. (a) Determine the coordinates of the centroid of the shaded area, as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 2(a).
(b) Locate the centroid of the shaded area between of the two curves, as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 2(b).

3. (a) Calculate the forces in members BC, BE and EF as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 3(a).
(b) For the loading condition as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 3(b), determine the components of the reactions at A and
E.

4. (a) The uniform pole of length | and mass m is placed against the supporting surfaces as shown in Fig. for
Q.No. 4(a). If the coefficient of static friction is
x
=.25 at both A and B, determine the maximum angle 0 at
which the pole can be placed before it begins to slip.

(b) Determine the moments of inertia of the Z-
section about its centroidal x

and y

axes, as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 4(b).

5. (a) Block A has a mass of 30 kg and block B has a mass fof 15 kg, as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 5(a). the coefficients
of friction between all surfaces of contact are
x
=.15 and
k
=.1. Knowing that 0 =3 and P =250 N,
determine (i) the acceleration of block A (ii) the tension in the cord.
(b) Determine the accelerations of bodies A and B and the tension in the cable, as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 5(b),
due to the application of the 300 N force. Neglect all friction and the masses of the pulleys.

6. (a) The 3 kg block A, as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 6(a), rests on the surface for which the coefficient of kinetic
friction,
k
=.3. Determine the distance the 8 kg cylinder B must descend so that A has a speed of F
A
=5 m/ x
starting from rest.
(b) A smooth 2-kg collar C, as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 6(b), fits loosely on the vertical shaft. If the spring is
unstrectched when the collar is in the position A, determine the speed at which the collar is moving when y =1 m
, if (i) it is released from rest at A and (ii) it is released at A with an upward velocity F
A
=2 m/ x.

7. (a) Two smooth billiard balls A and B each have a mass of 200 g, as shown in Fig. for Q.No. 7(a). If A strikes B
with a velocity (F
A
)
1
=1.5 m/ x, determine their final velocities just after collision. Ball B is originally at rest
and the coefficient of restitution, e =.85.

(b) For the instant shown in Fig. for Q.No. 7(b), determine the velocity of the centre G of link AB when crank OA
passes the horizontal position. Solve the problem using the method of instantaneous centre of zero velocity.
