, At 111630, January 1945, the 73rd Armd FA En departed
II at Launois as per F.O. #1, Hq. 9th Armd Div. to as
fseably area vicinity Thionville. Billeting party had been
fsent out and billets were selected as follows:

"B" Battery at Bewange (87987940)
"C" Battery at Roch1onv111e (92557579)
Service Battery at Havange (89577305)
I The battalion elosed at the above billets at 120230, Jan.
j1945, and resumed the march at 1600 on the same day. Billet
i1ne..party again preceeded the battalion. At 2100 same day,
173rd Armd FA En closed into billets at following locations
it remained throughout the remainder o'f the, period.
'Headquarters, Headquarters Battery and Service Battery at

The battalion continued reequipping and several new ve
hicles were 4rawn. All vehicles received thorough mainten
ance and a program of comprehensive training,was carried out.
On 18 JanU8.ry 1945, at about 1000 the 2nd Platoon, Bat
'tery "B", 482 AAA comme.nded by Lt. Haich reported, was attached
to the 73rd Armd FA En and took up tactical positions in de
fense of the battalion area.
At 231300, January 1945, the 1st Platoon of "Dt1 Battery,
,commanded by Lt. Bassett replaced the platoon commonded by
Lt. Haich as per/verbal orders C.O. 482 AAA En.
On 22 JanU2.ry 1945, sixteen 105 Howitzers' of the 73rd
Armd FA En were re-calibrated by order of the C.O., Div.
Arty, 9th Aruxi DiV. It was impossible to callbr3.te the other
,two pieces due to mechanical d1rficulties.

At the close of the p'eriod, 73rd Armd FA :en had trained
a new fire direction center and was ready to return to active
combat.
The weather throughout the period was below freezing and
heavy snows kept the ground covered. As this unit was in bil
lets, the weather had little effect on its activIties.
Section.IV. Comments.
The towns in which the 73rd Armd FA En were billetted,
espeCially AY, presented new problems regarding civilian con
trol and investigation of suspected collaborators.
Because of the fact that C.I.C., Civil Affairs and other
special division detachments do no have adequate personnel to
properly cover all units of the Division it 1s believed an op
erating procedure should be adopted and units trained in prop
er methods or handling civilians and searching buildings, ot
suspected civilians. It 1s further believed separate units
should make an organized investigation of the whole town.occu
pied to gua.rantee safety. Many civilians in the town of AY
were found to have firearms and dangerous explosives in their
possession which were revealed only bY search although a re
quest for such items had previously been made.
A practical method of the distribution ot civilian passes
is necessary. Combat troops are not authorized to issue pas
,ses and yet are constantly bothered with requests,
:for permits to travel to obtain food, Jaed1cal aid, etc

SECTION III. Narratiw
At the beginning of the 73rd Ar.m'd Field
Artillery Battalion remained in billets located as fol10ws:
Headquarters and Headquarters Battery and Service at
AY-sur-Mos.elle X'12508880).
"A" Battery at Tremery (73009000).
"Bit Battery at Montrequienne (74109100).
"C" Battery at Rurange (76509060).
The Eattallon remained in these billets, resting and re
equiping until 22 February 1945. During this time uni t train
ing was emphasized. A training program was set up with em
phasis on motor maintenanoe and fire direction. Due to heavy
losses sustained in previous engagement much training was nec
essary for fire direction personnel and training of reinforoe
ments. on 5 February service practice was conduoted in the vi
cinity of (99.1-77.8). TwO hundred and fifteen rounds of 105mm
ammunition were expended. Another service practice was conduc
ted on 12 February in the vicinity of (02.0-73.0)_ one hundred
thirty-five rounds of 105mm ammunition were expended.
On 22 February the 73rd Ar.mored Field Artillery BattalioD
reoeived orders from Headquarters Ninth Ar.mored Division and
Feadquarters Combat Command "]t" to move to all assembly area in
the vicini ty of Sprimont, Belgium.
The 73rd Ar.mored Field Artillery Battalion departed from
AY 8_t 1000 and the night of 22 February was spent in overnight
billets with Headquarters and HeadqUarters Battery located at
noirefounta.ine (4100-3390) and tr..e remainder of the Battalion
at Bouillon(080-365).
The Battalion closed at 2030 after travelling 103 miles.
r,he maroh was resumed at 230800 February and oloBed in billets
in Esneaux(4465-4l72) at 1500 the same daY. The distance
trBveled was seventy miles. Training and was re
sumed.
On 27 February verbal orders were reoeived from COB and
Division Artillery for an approach maroh into Ger.many. The
was prepared to move at 0500 28 February but all
orders were revoked at 0230 28 Februar,y. on 28 Februar.y the
73rd Armored Field Artillery Batta.lion departed Esneaux at
11700 and arrived in assembly area Brand, Gennany( 8930-3990)
a.t 020001 Maroh 1945. Distance marched forty-two miles.

were very active. Around 132030B April ten Enemy planes came over

Hef: K283865, Sheet; Chemni tz, R-7, 1/160,000) where a large
conc8ntrc.tion of Enemy troops and artillery was holding up the ad
vance of the supported Tank Battalion. At lo40B the tank troops
were mopping up the town. Later it was reported that 30-S8mm guns e
were destroyed, 30 and 200 PWs taken. This unit moved into
tewn at 2120Bo
At IGl045B April the Battalion Advance Survey and party,
after having entered Glasten(K469960, Sheet; Chemnitz, R-7) was fired
upon by sniperso A brief fire fight ensued in which 2 Enemy were
killed and 22 taken prisoner. One member of this unit was wounded
and later evacuated. At 182300B while at Glasten, a sniper fired
and wounded one member of this unito The sniper was not located.
One of the unit outposts near Glasten was fired on by 4 hnemy at
192230B. The Enemy escaped into the nearby woods. Flushing parties
which '.vere active scouring the woods around Glasten captured small
groups of Enemy found in them.
