Ep. 2: Becoming an Engineer Listen to and/or download podcast episode 2: Becoming an Engineer, featuring Lynda Zhang, at http://aic-edu.tumblr.com/post/57960997817. [01:50] LYNDA: BME (Biomedical Engineering) is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology, mostly for healthcare purposes. This includes building diagnostic software, designing medical devices, and learning, the biomechanics behind stress/strain loading in the body. Its the combination of biology and engineering skills that you need because the basic biological knowledge is used for you to build computational models of human systems like in the biotransport of oxygenorglucosemetabolismsystem. [02:43] LYNDA: MechEMechanical Engineeringdeals with the design, analysis, andusageofheatandmechanicalpower.Imguessingalotofheat transfer, mechanics, and structural analysis goes into calibrating his (Tony Starks)IronMansuit.Whileweretalkingaboutcalibratingcontrolsystems, Computer Engineering and Software Engineering plays a big role, as well as ElectricalEngineering.ElectricalEngineering,orDoubleE,isthestudyand application of electricity and electromagnetism. It deals with electronics, telecommunication, and signals processing. So think about all the soldering Tony Stark does in the movies. You see him, like, fixing stuff and fixing machinery. I cant imagine how many circuit boards there are in his suit, butyoucantreallycontrolhardwarewithoutthesoftware. [03:41] LYNDA:ComputerEngineeringissoftwareandhardware, whereasElectrical Engineering is mostly hardware. And Software Engineering and Computer Science is mostly software. Computer Engineering falls in the middle, so its hardware and software. Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering are really related. I know at the University of Virginia, just to double major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, all you have to do is to taketwoextracourses.Thatshowsimilartheprogramsare. http://www.jq-edu.com/ 1

[05:18] LYNDA: Civil Engineering deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of physical and natural build systems, and environments like bridges, roads, and buildings. Its this overarching area that covers Environmental Engineering, for example, sustainability issues, and Transportation Engineering, like traffic congestion, roadside efficiency. Thatssomethingwehavetodealwithinreallife. [06:00] LYNDA: Even though civil engineers work in the same field of design as architects, civil engineers have more legal responsibilities, in terms of ensuring that the structural integrity of the building works, whereas architectsdecidehowthebuildinglooks, likehowtokeepthelightsgraceful and elegant. The civil engineers are making it come together, even though architectsdesignthefloorplansofthebuildingsandtheappearancesofthe buildings, civil engineers are the ones that bring it together. So architects can go into civil engineering, mainly structural engineering, but civil engineersusetheframeworksthatarchitectsprovide. [07:35] NATALIA:Sowhatdoyouthinkschoolslookforinanengineeringstudent? [07:41] LYNDA: You really dont have to be Tony Stark, but you do need to exhibit the desire to create things and the need to make things. At the core of the skills you learn at the engineering school are just a set of problem solving skills. The idea is when you graduate as an engineer, youre not just graduating as a biomedical engineer. Youre not just graduating as a civil engineer. What youre doing is applying the problem solving skills you learn to other areas. In a realday situation youll never have just ten biomedical engineers working together. Youll also have the biomedical engineers work withthechemicalengineers, workwiththemechanicalengineers. [08:58] LYNDA: Ithinktogointotheengineeringschoolyoujusthavetodisplaythe factthatyoulovesolvingproblemsandyouarewillingtotakeyourproblem solvingskillstoapplythemtoeverydaylife.Youdontreallyhavetohavean extensive background in terms of engineering projects or in terms of building things, but you do have to show to the schools that youre open to learning these things. You have to show them that youre very forward looking, and you want to apply everything you learn to a greater cause so you can go and solve these problems. I think engineers are the ones who identifytheproblemsandtrytosolvetheminaverytechnicalsetting. http://www.jq-edu.com/ 2
