IN THE NAME OF GOD FOREWORD By their very nature, technical specifications are continuously subject to modifications and revisions. To strengthen their merit and usefulness, continuous improvements, addendum, deletion of disparate information and consequently provision of updated revisions are to be made in order to ascertain that such Specifications meet the current requirements, inclusive of Iranian Petroleum Standards (IPS) and the recognized and acceptable national and international Standards, as well as the optimal codes and practices based on the accumulated in- house know how and plant knowledge and experiences. However, in reality, due to several reasons, not to mention the complexity of the matter, the ultimate goal of continuous direct embedment of the required changes on the relevant Specifications may be far reaching. Therefore, in the interim periods between the officially issued revisions, the required changes will appear in other documents related to the engineering and design work of the on going projects. In response to the initiative of the Design Division and Directorate, and considering that the task of the execution of several important and mega projects for the realization of the new oil refineries, pipelines and oil terminals as well as improvements of the existing facilities, has been assigned to NIOEC, it was decided to update the NIOEC Specifications and to issue new official revisions. The Design and Engineering Directorate was itself entrusted to carry out this important task, and as such by forming several special technical committees, working in close co-operation and cohesion and sharing their expertise and knowledge, the updated and revised NIOEC Specifications were successfully prepared and compiled. These Specifications are intended to be used for Oil Refineries, Distribution Depots, Oil Terminals, Pipelines and Pump Stations within NIOEC projects, and have been proven to be of high value for such purposes. It must however be appreciated that these Specifications represent the minimum requirements and should in no way be interpreted as a restriction on the use of better procedures, engineering and design practices or materials. We encourage and highly appreciate the users and other clear sighted and experts to send their comments on the Specifications to the Design and Engineering Director of NIOEC for evaluation and approval.

1. SCOPE This NIOEC Specification covers general requirements for materials and application of heat transfer cement and channels to tracing systems for heating piping, vessels and other equipment. The purpose of heat transfer cement is to provide a path of pre calculated heat flow from the tracing element to the piping of equipment, in order to obtain more rapid heat-up, closer temperature control, or higher process temperature. Modification: This NIOEC Specification covers general requirements for materials and application of heat transfer cement and channels to tracing systems for heating piping, vessels and other equipment. The purpose of heat transfer cement is to provide a path of pre calculated heat flow from the tracing element to the piping or equipment, in order to obtain more rapid heat-up, closer temperature control, or higher process temperature.

2. REFERENCES Throughout this Specification the following dated and undated standards/ codes are referred to. These referenced documents shall, to the extent specified herein, form a part of this Specification. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any supplements and amendments) applies. For dated references, the edition cited applies. The applicability of changes in dated references that occur after the cited date, shall mutually be agreed upon by NIOEC and the Vendor/Contractor. IPS (IRANIAN PETROLEUM STANDARDS)

NIOEC-SP (NIOEC SPECIFICATIONS) NIOEC-SP-00-10 " NIOEC Specification For Units" 3. UNITS International system of units(SI) shall be used in accordance with NIOEC-SP-00-10, unless otherwise specified. 4. GENERAL DESIGN 4.1. All pressure testing shall be completed before application of heat transfer cement. Under no condition shall heat transfer cement be applied prior to final pressure testing of the tracer. 4.2.The surface of the pipe, vessel or equipment on which heat transfer cement is to be applied shall be essentially free of all loose foreign matter such as scale, rust, dirt or scaled paint, and of grease, oil, mill varnish or protective coatings not rated for the operating process temperature. This can be accomplished by wire brushing and solvent cleaning. 4.3.Aluminum surfaces which are to receive heat transfer cement shall first be primed with a dielectric primer designed for coating the particular surface involved. The primer shall be applied 2

only after the surface has been prepared in accordance with Paragraph 4.2 above. Primer shall be applied only to that portion of the surface which is to be covered by, or will be in contact with, the heat transfer cement. Primer application shall be in accordance with the manufacturers recommendation, and shall be dry to the touch before the cement is applied. 5. BASIC MATERIALS 5.1 Heat Transfer Cement Standard Grade, for temperature from sub-zero to (316C) 600F, shall be inorganic with highly efficient heat transfer characteristics and cement-like hardness when cured. Thermon Manufacturing Company Standard Grade, Carboline Company Heat-Con, Zeston Inc. Zeston R, or approved equal. 5.2.Dielectric Primer Aluminum surface preparation. Thermon Manufacturing Company Thermon ALP, Carboline Company Precoat or approved equal. (primer must be compatible with the cement being used.) 5.3. Galvanized Steel Channel 16 guage furnished in 4 feet lengths for enclosing heat transfer cement, Thermon TFK-4 channel for 3/8 and 1/2 O.D. tracer and TFK-7 channel for 3/4 O.D. tracer, or approved equal. Modification: Galvanized Steel Channel 16 gauge furnished in 4 feet lengths for enclosing heat transfer cement, Thermon TFK-4 channel for 3/8 and 1/2 O.D. tracer and TFK-7 channel for 3/4 O.D. tracer, or approved equal. 5.4.Bands Shall be 13mm wide x 0.38mm thick (1/2 x 0.015) stainless steel with wing type seals. 6. APPLICATION

6.1.Extent of heat transfer cement will be indicated on drawing. 6.2.For straight runs of tracer tubing, TFK channels shall be used as applicators. Fill the channels with heat transfer cement using a pointed hand trowel. A striking tool supplied with the channel shall be used to make a V shaped groove in the cement that corresponds to the space that will be occupied by the tracer. The channels shall be installed over the tracer tubing immediately after being filled with cement. Center the channel over the tracer and press snugly against the pipe. Temporary the wires which hold the tracer in place shall be removed prior to applying channel. Each section of channels shall be butted together without overlapping. Secure channels with stainless steel bands spaced 406mm (16) centers with one centered over each butt joint. Wherever tracer tubing leaves channel it shall be secured to the pipe with two stainless steel bands. Care shall be taken to make certain bands are securely tightened to prevent movement of tubing. See Paragraph 8. 6.3.For ells, use short channel sections and install as illustrated in Paragraph 8. 6.4.Where multiple tracer elements have been installed a distance of 3 or less apart, such as valves, flanges, fittings and other irregularly shaped equipment, the cement shall be applied with a trowel. cement shall be applied so that the tracer elements are completely embedded in a solid mass of heat transfer cement.

6.5.Heat Transfer Cement shall not be applied during weather colder than (5C) 40F without taking extra precautions such as preheating the cement, piping, vessels and equipment, and the mechanical application equipment.

7.

WEATHERPROOFING AND CURING

Heat Transfer Cements are generally water soluble and require the same general moisture protection necessary for most insulation materials. This can be accomplished by the use of polyethylene film or aluminum foil. The purpose of temporary weatherproofing is to shed rain, snow or sleet. It is not necessary that the temporary covering be tightly sealed. The channel system does not require any pre-curing or start-up technique. The system may be put in service immediately.
