Halfen Cast-in Channels, Introduction

Halfen cast-in channels officially approved

Halfen cast-in channels supplied with bolt anchors or welded anchors are appoved by the German construction materials supervisory board (DIBt) for load bearing structures: - type HTA: Approval No. Z - 21.4 - 34, dated 1. 1. 1998, - type HZA: Approval No. Z - 21.4 - 145, dated 17. 7. 1998. Halfen channels are supplied ready to use complete with polystyrene filler and nail holes. They are easy to fix by simply nailing to the timber formwork.

Selection criteria
In addition to the normal hot dip galvanised, Halfen cast-in channels are also supplied in stainless steel for applications requiring increased corrosion resistance. When selecting Halfen channels, officially approved types HTA and HZA are recommended. These are available with a variety of profiles (see Pages12 - 24) and anchor designs (see Page 30).

Filler easy to remove

To prevent an infill of concrete, Halfen cast-in channels are filled with foam. Depending on the application two different fillers are available (see Page 10). After removal of the shuttering the filler can be easily removed using a suitable tool (see instructions Page 10).

Secure assembly with Halfen channel

Halfen bolts can be inserted at any point along the channel and fixed by turning through 90 and then thightening the nut. At the channel ends, bolts should not be located beyond the last anchor (= 2,5 cm from the channel end); the anchor positions of bolt anchors are visible from inside the channel slot. To ensure correct installation of the bolt the position of the notch at the end of the shank should be checked. The notch must be transverse to the channel direction. If the channel is recessed from the face of the concrete e.g. due to insufficient nailing to the formwork or weak formwork, packing shims (see Page 32) should be used over the face of the channel before fixing any other components. A plate washer should always be used under the nut when fixing direct to the face of the channel. Lock washers type SIC (Page 35) provide additional security against turning of the bolt head. Nuts should be tightened to the torque values as stated for the Halfen bolts (Pages 13 - 25).

(Order code . . A4 - Ank.A4 ) Stainless steel channels ranging from HTA 28/15 to HTA 52/34 and HZA 41/22 are generally supplied with both profile and anchors manufactured from stainless steel. (Channels 55/42, 54/33, 72/48 and 72/49: to order) These Halfen "entirely stainless steel" channels are not subject to any restriction with regard to concrete cover, due to the inherent properties of stainless steell. The following are examples where it is often necessary to use entirely stainless steel channels: Bridge and tunnel structures (e.g. fixing of ductwork and drainage pipes, catenary wires), Sewage treatment plants (e.g. fixing of weir plates), Chemical industry (e.g. fixings exposed to corrosive substances), Curtain walling, brickwork cladding reinforced concrete structures requiring increased corrosion protection of the reinforcement.

Filler Selection and Fixing to the Formwork

Fillers in Halfen Channels

To help preventing the ingress of concrete grout, Halfen channels are supplied with a filler. Two types are available depending on the application.
bead filler

Po

ene lystyr

1. Polystyrene Bead Filler (Standard) Material: Polystyrene

Removing the polystyrene bead filler, using an appropriate tool.

2. Halfen Combination Strip Filler (to order, code Kf) Material: Polyethylene

The polystyrene bead filler has been the standard for Halfen channels for many years. On countless projects around the world, it has provided protection against ingress of concrete grout into the channel. The polystyrene is dense and fills the channel completely, even between the lips. After striking the formwork, removal of the filler is simply done using an appropriate tool . Note: Due to the production process, the polystyrene bead filler may not be completely tight at both ends of the channel, notably in the larger profiles. However this does not affect the useable length of the channel, since Halfen Thead bolts should not be located beyond the last anchor (= 2,5 cm from the channel end, see also p.5). If Halfen channels are required to be quickly cleared of the filler along the entire length of the channel, after removing the formwork, Halfen supplies channels with combination strip filler at a small extra charge.

Subject to alteration

After striking the formwork the combination strip filler is simply pulled out of the channel. In order to avoid rupture of the strip filler, an appropriate tool should be used as shown.

Fixing to Formwork
Care should be taken to ensure that the correct type of Halfen channel, as specified on the drawing (channel size, material finish, anchor type, length) is adequately fixed to the formwork and in the required position, so that it cannot be displaced when pouring and compacting the concrete. This ensures that after removal of the formwork the channel face is flush with the concrete surface. Fix to timber formwork with staples or nails. For fixing stainless steel Halfen channels stainless steel nails type ENA 28/65 are available to order. Fix to steel forms with bolts, dowels etc. (see below).

a) Fixing to timber formwork:

Nail through the nail holes in the back of the channel onto the timber form. When using stainless steel Halfen channel we recommend using stainless steel wire nails, available to order, in size 28/65. Order code: ENA Staple to the timber form. Order code: KRA

b) Fixing to steel formwork:

Using Halfen bolts through the steel form. (Press bolt head into the channel filler)

Notes to pages 12 - 24
A4 = material 1.4571/ 1.4401 (grade A4) ; A2 = material 1.4301 (grade A2). Stainless steel Halfen channels ranging from HTA 28/15 to HTA 52/34 and HZA 41/22 have generally anchors made in stainless steel. Other profiles are only supplied with stainless steel anchors, when this is quoted on the order, using the code HTA . . / . . - Ank.A4 . The load capacities quoted correspond to official approval. For distances between load points and allow. loads in concrete B 35: see page 26. Not part of the official approval. Reduced allow. loads as indicated (or consult Halfen). Order code: HTA-V . . / . . Anchor design: A = welded anchor (I - anchor); B = bolt anchor, see also page 30. Channels will be delivered as available unless specified on the order. Where simultaneous loading occurs, in both pull out and transverse shear or longitudinal shear parallel to the channel axis, the resultant load should not exceed the value of F = 5 kN for single loads or F = 3,5 kN for load pairs. Load transmission only by frictional resistance. For loads in longitudinal direction Halfen channels type HZA or hot rolled Halfen channels and HSR bolts should be used.

Notes to Pages 26 and 27 The allowable bolt load as given in the Tables on Pages 13 - 25 is not be exceeded. Allowable loads in concrete B 35 (i.e. concrete strength w 35 N/mm) are only permitted when additional crack prevention reinforcement (minimum 8mm bars grade BSt 500 S around each HTA anchor) or transversal pressure is used. When fixing in concrete B 15 (i.e. concrete strength w = 15 N/mm) the allowable loads for B 25 should be reduced by the factor of 0,7 and in structural lightweight concrete LB 25 (expanded clay) by the factor of 0,67. Special channel type 38/17 K with reduced anchor spacing of 200 mm, max. point load FZ = 7,0 kN. HZA 41/22 used in conjunction with HZS 41/22: allowable load in the longitudinal direction of the channel 5 kN (see also Page 17). The minimum spacings given in the Table apply to standard reinforced concrete of all grades B 25. For unreinforced concrete the minimum spacings should be increased by 30%. Dimensions in brackets apply when actual ar 2 x allow. ar. Minimum structural component width b = 2 x ar needed for the channel to fit. The thickness of the concrete depends of the length of the anchor and the necessary concrete cover "c" in accordance with DIN 1045. See Page 30 for anchor dimensions. Only applicable for direct pull out loads and for HZA channel, when loaded in the longitudinal direction of the channel.
11

For shear loads acting away from the edge of the concrete the distance ar may be reduced to 0,5 x ar or 5 cm minimum, provided reinforcement is fitted as shown in the diagram on Page 28. For pull out loads at an angle of 45 or shear loads acting towards the edge of the concrete reinforcement is required if the edge distance is between 75 and 100 mm (see Page 28). Concrete grades: e.g. B 25 = concrete strength w = 25 N/mm)

In accordance with certification 023/98 of the German Authority for Civil Protection dated 15. 4. 1998. Halfen cast-in channels provide safe fixings for components subject to shock loading e.g. when used in shelter construction.

The following conditions must be observed:

1) Minimum structural component dimensions, centre spacings and edge distances as detailed in the official approval (see Page 27) must be adhered to. 2) For standard applications (normal operating live and dead loads) the loads defined in the DIBt Approval Certificate apply (see also tables page 26). When components are statically loaded along the channel length, toothed channels type HZA should be specified instead of type HTA.

20 mm Anchor strap bent over by at least 20 mm Loop pressing Filler: Polystyrene bead

Bent as near vertical as possible

The anchor straps are supplied flat for pushing through the loops to a central position at 250 mm centres. The loops are punched at 125 mm centres. Then they are bent upwards as near vertical as possible at the edge of the loop, and finally the ends should be bent sharply outwards. Care should be taken to ensure anchor straps are always fitted to the first and last loop. With a 400 mm
HSB 38/17

Ties ML in combination with Halfen channels 25/15-D and 28/15

HMS 25/15 D ML
Lug-anchors, pre-punched in the back of the channel at 250 mm centres, are easily bent out on the site to provide additional anchorage.

Halfen brickwork restraint systems are designed to tie all masonry, both wall connections (fig.1) and external cladding masonry (fig.2) to load bearing concrete walls and columns. Because of the sliding capability of the brick ties within the channels the risk of the masonry cracking is greatly reduced.

Fixing profiled metal sheeting to HTU using self drilling screws.

Anchor type AN

The ideal technical solution to fixing profiled metal sheets to concrete using Halfen sheet fixing channels type HTU and self - drilling screws has now become an industry standard for this detail.
Screw fixing the profiled metal sheeting is simple and economic, especially when self drilling screws are used. The shape of the welded anchors ensures a safe and rigid fixing. The Styropor filler prevents the drill or self - drilling screw being damaged by the concrete or the anchor. The rigidity of the profile ensures a flush finish with the concrete for the profiled metal sheeting to fix to. HTU was developed in collaboration with the Institute for the Design and Construction of Sheet Metal Products (I.F.B.S). The German Construction Technology Institute in Berlin has officially approved the profiled metal sheet fixing channels type HTU under certificate No. Z - 21.4 - 84.

HTU, anchor type D

Installation and fixing to formwork before pouring concrete

The channel type HTU is designed for casting in flush to the surface of concrete elements. When cast into the top surface it is recommended that the concrete surface be trowelled smooth and sloping slightly towards the outer edge. This should ensure that the profiled metal sheets lie direct onto the HTU channel. If, however, the manufacturer of the profiled metal sheets requires an overall bearing surface width of more than 60 mm, this can be achieved by flush channel installation and a smooth, even concrete surface. Care should be taken to ensure the installation is horizontal, correctly aligned and centrally positioned in the concrete element. A 20 mm wide joint between abutting channel ends is recommended.

Fixing to cast-in HTU channels with self - drilling screws

The self - drilling screw is fitted to the powered screwdriver and secured in one operation without the need to drill a pilot hole first. Even the four fold overlap at joints does not present a problem for the screw. Use a powered screwdriver with approx. 1500 rpm and hexagonal socket size 10. The appropriate tools for the actual screws are normally available from the screw supplier. Fixing of the profiled metal sheeting must be done within the central third of the channel width and the screw must be at least 25 mm away from the end of the channel.
