Location: Whistler backcountry

Name: Spring Spines
Skier: Riley Leboe

BORN IN THE UK , Dan Carr took a

gap year in Whistler, British
Columbia after high-school which
planted the seed for a mountain
obsession. While his passion for
mountain life took a backseat as
he finished his degree in England,
it wasn't long before he returned
to the mountains to start shoot-
ing his friends in action. As a
finalist in the prestigious 2008 Pro
Photographer Showdown, Dan
has already proven his expertise
behind the lens in his short career.
His work has been featured in ski
and snowboard magazines from
Japan to Canada and everywhere
in between as well as innumer-
able commercial campaigns for
an ever widening list of clients.

During the winter you will find

him hanging out in British Colum-
bia, Canada shooting alongside
the worlds top snowsports
athletes and film companies in
the never ending quest for the
perfect images from his white,
wintery world.

was late in the season but Whistler had a few late dumps and

INSPIRATION: Nick and I found

this run that ran off the
south face of Happo-One
mountain in Hakuba. I had
been looking at it before
the snow even fell. Eventu-
ally we made our way in and
explored the zone. It was
epic and always fresh. You
had to ski back to the resort
on the side roads. We
lapped this zone for weeks,
it also passed my house so I
hit it as a 'home run' on
pow days. This picture
reminds me of those days.

I ride my snowboard as much as possible in the
Northern Alps. It is an amazing place and a perfect
place to a pack camera. I have worked many jobs in
media including magazine editor, graphic designer,
writer, and independent publisher. My favorite job
will always be behind a camera.

DESCRIPTION: I spotted this little

jump area earlier in the day
and by the location of it, I
knew the light would be really
good at the end of the day.

TIME OF DAY: This is right at the

end of the day. You can see
the last bit of light hitting the
landing area. Probably around
4 or 5 pm because it was
January and the sun goes
down early that time of year.

SETUP: There was pretty

minimal set up for this. We
didn't require much of a jump
as a takeoff for this air
because it was a good natural
set up. We just had to wait til
the light was right. Shooting
this kind of photo you don't
get much time to work. The
light is perfect for maybe 10
or 15 minutes. I think we had
two tries at this before it got
too dark.

INSPIRATION: Shooting a silhou-
