ahead and buy early. Hugh Leader will be happy to coordinate your soft goods purchase. Our next item up for sale is a 1996 Pearl Izumi jersey in a lovely orange fade with our beloved BUMP logo. The deadline to pre-order a jersey is Wednesday, February 7th (the next BUMP meeting). If you pre-order your jersey the price will be $42 (give or Lake $5 depending on the quantity the club orderes). If your jersey is purchased after February, the price will be $55 (give or Lake$5). We do not guarantee jersey availability after February 7th. We will probably order a small surplus but we are not making any promises about that. So mail your jersey order forms, which you'll find on the back of this newsletter, to BUMP P.O. Box 590061 Birmingham, AL 35259-0061. Or bring your order form to the February meeting. But remember Wednesday February 7th is the absolute last day to pre-order a jersey and receive that discount thing. You must be a member in good standing to order a jersey. In other words, pay your dues. Dues are $20 per person and were due as of December 1st. If you haven't paid (and we know who you are) send a $25 deposit for your jersey and $20 for your dues. Public meetings involving Greenway construction in the Birmingham area will Lake place this month. These meetings are an opportunity for public officials to hear what we want from a Greenways project. Greenways are an important s~ep toward making Birmingham a more bIke friendly city. If we don't voice an opinion about improving bicycle usage in the community, who will? See Ken Hester's Greenways article for details. As your new president, I propose that we designate the third weekend of every month as a club ride time. By no means is this the only time we can ride. This gives everyone a set time to reserve for a day trip somewhere. In January, Mike Herring will lead us on an adventtous ride through the forests adjacent to the Ocoee River. See 'Some of what's happening' for details, or contact Mike Herring for more information. As of now February's ride site remains a mystery. Volunteers to lead rides are welcomed and encouraged. I'm looking forward to a terrific year. In 1996 we will put on another successful race, explore lots of trails, and look snazzy in those orange jerseys. Have fun!

Welcome to 1996! I hope this newletter finds everyone healthy, happy and filled with enthusiasm for upcoming mountain bike events. First of all, old business. The beard of . directors has chosen officers for the 1996 calendar year. After much delibration, Larry Stanley was elected secretary, Will Luckett was chosen treasurer, Mike Herring was picked to be vicepresident, and (because noboody else wanted the job) I was asked to be president. The board of directors and officers' job is to keep things running smoothly for the benefit of the entire club. We place the officers' phone numbers in the n~wsJettP.r <:0 th<'.t may be easily contacted with questions and/or concerns. In order to maintain a vital, active club as well as develop new leaders for the upcoming years it is important that all members have a voice, and do not hesitate to use that voice. That's the way we keep everyone plugged in to what is going on in the mountain bike community. That's what being a member of BUMP is about.

Moving on to current business, BUMP's retail department is bigger than ever. Actually, the sweatshirt/tee shirt division is larger than we need it to be. We really, really, really, really need to sell these @#$!*#@ things. They'll make great Mother's Day presents, so plan

On Wednesday January 3rd Ken Hester began the meeting by introducing the new officers. If you don't know who they are then read the rest of the newsletter, their names are all over the place. Ordering jerseys was discussed. Jersey order forms are due by the February meeting. Members must have paid their dues to order a jersey. A $25 deposit is required to order the jersey. The balance is due upon receipt of the jersey.

BUMP is a not for profit corporation. This newsletter is produced by members of BUMP for the purpose of promoting safe and responsible use of mountain bicycles. The officers may be contacted at the following. Pres. Amy Hunter 933-1952 V.P. Mike Herring 663-6083 Sec. Larry Stanley 595-6176 Treas. Will Luckett 967-8951

We talked really bad about everybody who wasn't at tIle meeting. Ken Hester will attend an IMBA trail bicycle advocacy conference in Arizona at Biosphere II. We can look forward to Ken's report at our next meeting. Barry Hair stayed at home and pouted because he doesn't get to be the president anymore. (Just kidding) Planning meetings for proposed Greenways trails will take place January 16th at 6:30 at Oak Mountain Elementary School and January 17th at 5:30 at A new bridge will be built to replace the Boy Scout Bridge on the red road. Amy Hunter suggested that the third weekend of every month be set aside as a club ride time. Everyone agreed with her because-.$he is wjldly popular. Everyone on earth respects her opinion and does exactly what she suggests. Dan Watson Jack Brnnsdorf Ken Hester Teresa Piercy Joel Robertson Greg Houston Ethan & Kathy White Ann. PARTY~
Once again, BUMP's year end party was a success. A good time was had by all, with a minimum of damage sustained. Hats off to Joe Cotlin for the use of his crib. Even though we don't know how grateful we are, I'm sure we all appreciate Laura Frasier cleaning the place. According to Joe the party can be classified a success. Joe says BUMP can party at his house in the future, "but next time bring more beer." The mountain bike cake, created by Teresa Piercy, was almost as big an attraction as the uni-skate -cycle-thing. After a mere swallow of meade, everyone seemed to gain unicycle skills. Or maybe everyone's watching skills detoriated. Anyway, Happy New Year to everyone from BUMP.

Pedestrian and Greenway Plan

By now, all of you BUMP members should have received a direct mailer announcment about a meeting concerning the Birmingham Area Bicycle Pedestrian and Greenway Plan. If you did not receive this piece of direct mail then you have moved and neglected to let your club know. There will be two additional public meetings. One on January 16th at Oak Mountain Intermediate School, and One on January 17th at Birmingham Botanical Garden. The meeting mat you have been personally invited to is on January 17th at 7:00 PM at Ryans Steak house, please RSVP as requested. This meeting has been organized for the purpose of gelling you, the members of BUMP, the Birmingham Bicycle Club, AWV, and the Birmingham Track Club together to review the proposed plan and to get feedback from you. Think about it, who else has a better insight of the desires and needs of the bicycle and pedestrian community than these groups?

If you don't show up, then don't whine when the politicains say "we commissioned a design firm to research and design a plan, but the community obviously does not see the need for any bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Not even the bicycle clubs were willing to show up to discuss the plan!" Don't let it happen, the opportunity will not come around again for a long time. The speaker will be Andy Clarke from the Bicycle Federation. The program is sure to be informative and you will have an opportunity to review the proposed bike/ped plan for the Jefferson and Shelby County areas. Several of us bicyclists are members of and have been attending the Greenways Advisory Board meetings with some regularity since last spring. Robert Gambrell, Bryan Oliver, and Howard Skipper are all members of the Advisory Board and have had much input to the plan. We do however need a showing of interest and support from the bicycling community for this planning to ever amount to anything.
