MET-3203: PROPULSION ENGINEERING Assignment No. 1 (Date of Submission: 6th June, 2013) 1. Explain the Momentum theory as applied to propeller aircrafts. Show the variation of Propeller efficiency with Advance ratio by plotting a velocity diagram of a propeller blade cross section. 2. Explain the working of the following with neat figures: (i) Turbo shaft engine, (ii) Scramjet engine and (iii) Pulse jet engine. 3. Conduct a comparative study of the performance characteristics of various Jet engines. 4. Explain the materials used for combustion chambers and turbine blades of a Jet engines. 5. Compare the Specific Fuel Consumption of a Turbojet and a Ramjet that are being considered for flight at M = 1.5, and 50,000 feet altitude (ambient pressure and temperature: 11.6 kPa and 205 K, respectively). The turbojet pressure ratio is 12 and the maximum allowable temperature is 1400 K. For the Ramjet the maximum temperature is 2500 K. For simplicity ignore aerodynamic losses in both engines. Conventional hydrocarbon fuels are to be used (Calorific value 45 MJ/kg). Assume = 1.4 and Cp = 1.005 kJ/kgK. 6. Compare the take off thrusts of two engines operating with the same core engine air flow rate, compressor exit pressure (12 atm), and turbine inlet temperature (1500 K), at the same ambient pressure and temperature. One of them is a Turbojet (bypass ratio equals zero) and the other has bypass ratio equals 10 and fan pressure ratio 1.6. For convenience we neglect the effect of losses in the compressor, burner and turbine and make approximations associated with fuel air ratio f <<1 and constant specific heat of the working fluid (with = 1.4). Find the ratio of thrusts at take off, with flight velocity u << ue, the exhaust velocity. ***
