CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN ON PARKING LOT IMPROVEMENTS


Newburyport - Beginning the week of }uly 22

, 2u1S, constiuction will begin on impiovements to the
uieen Stieet Paiking Lot in Bowntown Newbuiypoit.

The entiie paiking lot will be cleai anu open to the public uuiing Yankee Bomecoming (}uly 27 thiough
August 4). A Contiact foi the pioject was awaiueu to Taiget Constiuction, opeiating out of Salem, NB.
Besign foi the impiovements was pioviueu by the local fiim Boisley Whitten uioup. The pioject is
expecteu to continue thiough August into the fiist weeks of Septembei, with phaseu constiuction to
ieuuce the impact on businesses, iesiuents anu visitois. Appioximately 2S of the paiking lot will iemain
open at all times foi use by the public. The only exception to this will be a few shoit uays uuiing the
pioject when milling, paving anu final stiiping must be completeu.

As pait of the successful Unified Downtown Parking Program, Nayoi Bonna Bolauay has committeu
ievenues fiom the piogiam towaiu the maintenance anu iestoiation of infiastiuctuie in uowntown
Newbuiypoit, a populai uestination foi iesiuents anu touiists.

The cuiient "uieen Stieet Paiking Lot Impiovement Pioject" is the fiist of two impiovement piojects
slateu foi 2u1S. The pioject incluues lanuscaping impiovements, maintenance upgiaues, anu uiainage
anu infiastiuctuie impiovements within the uieen Stieet Paiking Lot. A key component of this pioject
will be the iemoval of awkwaiu uiamonu shapeu islanus within the paiking lot. These islanus have been
an inconvenience foi the fiont tiies of paikeu cais, anu almost all of the tiees within these islanus have
been lost ovei the yeais.

The existing paiking bays will be aujusteu slightly to allow the installation of new lineai planteis maue of
iaiseu gianite cuibing, similai to those founu at the neaiby Tanneiy Naiketplace. No paiking spaces will
be lost with the new islanu configuiation. New paiking meteis (pait of the City's Unified Downtown
Parking Program) will be ielocateu fiom usable paiking spaces to uesignateu locations within the new
lanuscapeu islanus.

The new tiees anu othei plantings will be an aesthetic impiovement to the paiking lot, as the oluei
uiamonu shapeu islanus consist mainly of small tiees anu stumps, heavy bollaius anu light poles. New

uncompacteu soil will help the tiees anu othei plantings to suivive longei than those that stiuggle touay,
by allowing watei, aii anu nutiients to ieach ioots.

Becaues ago, a significant amount of local anu feueial funus weie useu to iestoie uowntown
Newbuiypoit. Since that time of histoiic pieseivation anu uiban ienewal the City has benefiteu fiom
majoi infiastiuctuie impiovements within the uowntown. Some of this infiastiuctuie is in neeu of
iepaii. Last yeai, the City began ienovation of this infiastiuctuie with lighting impiovements on the Inn
Stieet peuestiian mall, as well as the iemoval of mouein "tuiiets" staiiwells which blockeu views to the
histoiic facaues.

The next phase of impiovements in the uowntown will focus on the Inn Stieet peuestiian mall, incluuing
iestoiation of the biick paveis, gianite steps, safety anu accessibility impiovements, lanuscaping anu
oinamental fencing, uiainage impiovements anu fountain iestoiation. These impiovements aie expecteu
to begin in Septembei anu shoulu be completeu by 0ctobei of this yeai.
