Former Packer speaks with Junior Indians players

MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Former Green Bay Packer William Henderson still has a passion for football, and he shared his passion of the game and the life lessons he learned from it while speaking to members of the Junior Indians football program Aug. 9. You should be doing fantastic, this is football season, Henderson said to the Junior Indians team. Your parents are providing the most unbelievable opportunity for you, because you get to play the best game in the world. No other sport is going to teach you all the fundamentals of how to exist or how to live and how to better your community than football. Henderson played 12 years with the Packers and was part of the team that won Super Bowl XXXI. He attended the University of North Carolina, and overcame an injury his senior season to play in the NFL. Lesson number one: Dont let adversity put you down, Junior Indians Coach Lou Sanicola said. He worked hard, came back from (an injury in college) and got drafted and had a successful pro career. Sanicola noted that Henderson is

The following report was taken from records at the Menomonee Falls Police Department. Theft A total of $3,050 in equipmentincluding three showerheads, an electronic shower module, a mirror and nickel-brushed towel and toilet paper holderswere removed from a construction site in the W17000 block of Ridge Line Trail between July 15 and 29. A 50-pound toolbox was removed from a garage in the W17000 block of St. Regis Drive during the overnight hours of July 26-27. The rear right tire of a vehicle at the residence was slashed during the theft. Disorderly conduct A 23-year-old man was arrested as a result of an incident outside of Kruegers Entertainment Center, N87 W16471 Appleton Avenue, at 1:47 a.m. July 28. Investigation revealed the man, while intoxicated, had caused a disturbance with other patrons. He was involved in an altercation, displayed a black handgun and broke a window near the front of the bar. The man fled, but was later located and taken into custody. Retail theft A male actor removed gaming cards from 40 packages at Walmart, N88 W15559 Main St., and left without paying for the merchandise around 3:05 p.m. July 14. A male subject left Walmart without paying for 43 cans of baby formula around 11:05 a.m. July 29. Warrant A 28-year-old Milwaukee man was taken into custody on a Watertown warrant at 6:51 a.m. July 13 following a traffic stop at Narrow Lane and Good Hope Road. A 20-year-old Milwaukee man was taken into custody on a Waukesha bench warrant at 9:47 p.m. July 14 following a traffic stop at Main and Water streets.
Police investigating crash

Menomonee Falls Police are investigating a vehicle accident that occurred at approximately 3:43 p.m. Aug. 15. According to a statement from police, a sport utility vehicle occupied by three adult men was westbound on Main Street and entered the on ramp to northbound US Highway 41/45. While negotiating the on ramp, the vehicle left the on ramp and struck a parked semi-trailer. The area was under construction and the semi-trailer was parked there in support of the construction. All occupants of the vehicle were transported to a local hospital, one via flight for life and two by ambulance. Two occupants sustained life threatening injuries and one sustained non-life threatening injuries. Police indicated that driver impairment issues are suspected in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Consistency the key with fitness

Everyone knows they need to do it, but the most important thing with exercise is actually getting started and making it a habit. The good news is there are many ways to make fitness a part of ones daily routine, and the positives are plentiful. Marilyn Ranney, a clinical exercise physiologist and certified wellness coach with the Workforce Health division of Froedtert and The Medical College of Wisconsin, emphasized that exercise is a must, not a maybe. Exercise is essential, she said. It is a necessary component of leading a healthy lifestyle. Seconded Dan Zeroth, recreation supervisor with the Menomonee Falls Community Education & Recreation Department, Physical activity is an important part of staying fit no matter what age you are. And the options are endless, he said. Aside from just the structured activities, theres also sports leagues and many passive forms of recreation out there, said Zeroth. There are so many different ways to get fit. Some things to keep in mind: Consult with a physician: One should always begin any new vigorous exercise program by checking in with the doctor, said Ranney. Make sure to get the okay before you start anything new, she said. Set some goals: Edward Pipp, owner of Preferred Fitness in Germantown, said its important to set goals both long term and short term, but be realistic and dont overwhelm yourself. The federal governments Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend two and a half hours of exercise per week for the average healthy adult to maintain ones weight and between three and five hours per week for weight loss. This, said Ranney, could mean a brisk walk or strength-training or a combination of things, and you should try to spread that out over a weeks time. Make it Me Time: Schedule your work-out time keep it, said Pipp. Mark time off on your calendar, he said. This is your personal time so schedule it as you would other things you enjoy. All the while keep your eyes on the prize, he said. Find your reason to workout, Pipp advised. This is the best way to stick to a workout routine. Dont overdo it: Individuals often assume the more exercise, the better, but this is the wrong approach for a variety of reasons, explained Pipp. Slow and consistent is the most important factor in achieving desired results in getting started, especially if someone has not exercised in awhile, he said. Doing too much too soon or performing intense exercises on a daily basis will have deleterious effects, such as muscle/tendon strains, loss of lean tissue, and fitness-level plateaus. Pipp said one should start with three days a week, with a combination of cardio, light weight training and stretching. Look beyond cardio: Strength training is a very important aspect of fitness, said Ranney, especially since we lose up to a half pound of muscle each year after the age of 40. This could mean lifting weights, working out on a balancing ball or doing flexibilityfocused activities such as yoga or Pilates, she said. You should try to hit all the major muscle groups (1-3 sets of 10-12 repetitions) two days each week, said Ranney. Remember to eat well: Nutrition is a necessary evil one must add to their program no matter what their ultimate goal, said Pipp. This is true, Ranney said, pointing out that new exercisers often play mind games with themselves and think because they worked out they can have dessert or an extra treat. By cutting out just 200 calories per day, the weight will start to come off, she said. Count all steps: Many people balk at the idea of a formal fitness regimen, but that flight of stairs at work can be factored into the equation, said Ranney. When it comes to exercise, something is better than nothing, Ranney said. Look for work outs that arent work outs, like taking the stairs, parking on the far end of the parking lot when running errands or walking to mail some letters at lunch. A major proponent of the quick hit exercise philosophy, Ranney said she is all about sneaking in fitness where you can. Have fun: If its not fun, its not going to happenat least not for long. We have found the moment a client stops having fun, their mood and attitude toward their goals changes, said Pipp. From her perspective, Ranney said that if one of her clients sounds less than enthusiastic about their current form of fitnesssay, the stationery bike collecting dust in their basementshe tells them to keep looking. Do something you enjoy, something youre passionate about, she said. Take a dance class, find another option. Mix it up: Its fun to try something you wouldnt normally do, said Zeroth, noting that most recreation departments make a point to offer a variety of activities to keep patrons interested. Just this fall we added Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Tabata and another Zumba class. Indeed, recreation departments are a great resource for easy and inexpensive options, Ranney noted. Focus on the benefits: Most people fixate on the weight loss aspect of exercise; however, that is just a small part of the picture, said Ranney. Exercise helps reduce heart disease, diabetes, all the major chronic illnesses, or at the very least it delays the onset of these things, said Ranney. It also improves sleep, acts as a great stress reducer, strengthens bones...there are so many benefits. Be patient: Pipp referred to the old adage of You get what you put into it, noting that being consistent with exercise is what matters most. Ranney recommends starting out gradually, maybe with a 10-minute walk, and to just go from there. The most important thing is finding a realistic way to fit activity into your life, she said. With the crazy-busy lives we lead, its important to build physical activityeven if its not necessarily exerciseinto our day.

Vintage baseball game at Richfield Park Aug. 18

The Richfield Historical Society is sponsoring a vintage baseball game between the Milwaukee Cream Citys and Eagle Diamonds and classic car show on Sunday, Aug. 18 at the Richfield Historical and Nature Park. The game will represent the years between 1865 and 1870 and all aspects of that era, including uniforms, equipment and scoring, will be featured. Children's activities and competitions will take place before the second game is played. Attendees can wander through the parks and see the classic cars on display. Tours of the Messer/Mayer Mill and homestead house are included in the price of admission. Attendees should bring a lawn chair. Food, wine and beer will be available from the concessions by Friess Lake Pub. The Nature Park parking lot, located at 1896 Highway 164 in Richfield, will open at 10 a.m. with the first game scheduled at 11 a.m. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $4 for children 6 through 12 and free for 6 and under.

Dear Dr. Winter, Mother is 96 years old and she started wearing dentures at about 60. She has no lower bone left! She has tried denture paste but it is useless. She eats the paste, gets sick to her stomach and when she leaves it out her lower denture bounces like a basketball when trying to eat. She can only drink her food now and is not a candidate for any surgery. Any suggestions? Dear L, I am sorry for your mothers problems. I would need to see her existing denture to evaluate the bite, the extensions of the denture acrylic and make sure it is fabricated properly to optimize her situation. When people have no bone left a soft silicone liner may help to increase the hold of the lower denture and provide more comfort. We do this by first testing it in tissue conditioner (like a soft band-aid) to see if her biting and chewing can be improved prior to making her a new set of dentures. That way she can see if we can help her before undergoing the expense of a new set of dentures. Lastly, I have successfully used mini-implants to stabilize dentures in patients with very little bone as we can place these in as little as 10 mm of bone. These would greatly help keep the dentures in place and prevent movement that interferes with her chewing! You can see videos of this on our website. Falls School Board approves preliminary budget

The Menomonee Falls School Board approved the preliminary budget Aug. 12. The budget will be presented during the Sept. 9 annual meeting. According to information from the district, the proposed levy under the budget will be $39,184,778, a 2.21 percent increase from last year. Under the equalized value calculations, the resident of a home with an equalized value of $250,000 will pay an addition $65.06 in the school portion of the property tax. In notes accompanying the tax levy figures, the district noted the total levy increased by 2 percent even as state aid was reduced by 13 percent. "We have incorporated the recently approved State Biennial Budget information into our preliminary budget. The preliminary budget includes the $75 per pupil increase on the revenue limit, the $75 per pupil state categorical aid, and has 0.3 FTE (full time equivalent) reserved for staffing needs based on unanticipated enrollment increases in the fall," Director of Business Services Jeff Gross stated in an Aug. 12 memo to the board. "The 20132014 preliminary operating budget incorporates a decrease of 1.5 percent in revenue allowed by the limit set by the state. General operating fund expenditures ($47.2 million) have been trimmed down to align with the lower state allowable revenue and are projected at a 1.2 percent decrease from 2012-2013 projected operating expenditures. He then added: The proposed budget overcomes the loss of nearly 15 percent in state funding, and maintains a small (2 percent) increase in the total (all funds) tax levy of just under $39.2 million. The general operations fund balance remains strong at 17% of operating expenditures, an important factor considered by bond rating agencies, which allows for reduced borrowing costs for the district." Gross said steps taken by the district include self-funding its insurance, reduced transportation costs, reduced special education out-of-district placements and efficient use of staff. Falls, Sussex advance in Land OLakes playoffs

Menomonee Falls advanced past the first weekend of the Land O'Lakes playoffs with two wins in two days. On Aug. 10, the Lakers beat the West Bend 7 Up 3-2. The next day Menomonee Falls rallied to beat the Sussex Cardinals 10-6. Sussex was trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning but scored the tying run. Menomonee Falls sealed the win as Sam Sivlotti hit a home run with two men on base to give the Lakers a 9-6 lead. Menomonee Falls added another run later in the inning. Land O'Lakes has a double-elimination format for its playoffs, so both Sussex and Menomonee Falls will be playing next weekend. Menomonee Falls will play at Pewaukee at 1 p.m. Aug. 17, with the winner of that game advances to 1 p.m. game at Sussex the next day. The Aug. 17-18 divisional results will determine who plays in the Land O'Lakes Grand Championship which begin Aug. 24-25.
