Compiling Tropical Health and Infectious Disease Module Competition

According to Global Burden Disease data 2004 from WHO, infectious diseases are still responsible for 16%-17% deaths of world population. Indonesia, as a tropical country, is a great choice for people who want to learn more about those important diseases. In order to facilitate this field, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia (FMUI) held Compiling Tropical Health and Infectious Disease Module Competition from April until June 2010. The aim of the competition is to develop a learning system, especially in tropical health and infectious diseases topic, based on information technology in international standard. Hence, people either from Indonesia or other countries, can study well here about this topic, said dr. Anis Karuniawati as the head of committee in this event. And surely we hope there will be more students or researchers who want to study about this important field, especially in our university, added her. Participants had submitted the documents before May 17. There are three categories in this event. They are Student Centered e-Learning Environment (SCeLE) Module, Credit Earning Module, and Elective Posting Module, said Anis. Then, the committee chose three finalists from each category. The finalists had to show their work in a presentation. The presentation took place in FMUI Main Hall on May 26. All finalists had ended their presentation at 3 pm. All their wotk were also very interesting and creative. The jury come from various fields which are close to this topic, such as internal medicine, public health, and also basic science for infectious disease. Finally, the committee announced the winner of this event on the next day. We all very grateful to have such many great people in this competition, said Anis. The first winners are Dr. dr. Peni K. Samsuria, M.S. (Department of Physics) for SceLe Module, dr. Ninik Mudjihartini (Department of Biochemistry) and Desak Gede B.K.,S.Farm, Apt (Department od Pharmacy) for Credit Earning Module, and dr. Dhanasari V. Trisna,M.Sc.,CM-FM (Department of Community Medicine) for Elective Posting Module. The first winner received 15 million rupiah on SceLe category, then 10 million rupiah on both Credit Earning Module and Elective Posting Module. All of the submitted module will be developed further to fulfill the requirement of IT based learning standard at the Universitas Indonesia. The comittee had set a target that at least three modules will be launched and available for not only for the student of Universitas Indonesia but also for other university students and foreingn students.

Hopefully, the final goal of this competition coukd be achieved. The learning system can be applied and a better future for tropical health and infectious disease field can be reached.
