Youthful Lusts

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life is NOT of the Father but is if the world. (I John 2: 15-16, KJV)

People today especially the youth are exposed to different kinds of media that could draw them away from their main purpose in life. Many factors such as technology, computer games, social networking, addictions, and other forms of entertainment had pulled the youth from their primary purpose-education. Among the factors presented beforehand, technology in the form of texting, pc games and social networking (facebook, twitter, etc) has the greatest impact especially here in the Philippines. Even a 5 year old child today has her own phone. The youth today can spent an average of 2 hours in front of the computer screen and she could never be bored but she gets tired even just doing her assignment for 30 minutes. According to Gods word, the bible, we should not love the world and anything that is in it. It emphasizes three (3) categories that would entice any person in loving this temporal world. These are (a) lust of the flesh, (b) lust of the eyes, and the (c) pride of life. First, we go into the lust of the flesh. These are the things that tempt our flesh/bodies in doing an inappropriate thing or anything that diverts your attention from God into yourself. It is simply satisfying your urge of something. Playing video games, skipping school so as to watch movies in cinemas, and splurging yourself in everything that you want (not need) are just some examples. There are so many things that the flesh is telling us to do but we should all remember especially the youth that if we let our bodies win, we are letting sin win.. We should let God win it over and flee from these things that might hinder our primary purpose. Another is the lust of the eyes. Television and the World Wide Web have exposed young teens and even kids into scenes that are highly sensitive. Pornography, violence and the like are quite a common scene in our TV and PC screens where our Lord is not glorified. Yes, it is no doubt that these technologies help make our work easier by just typing and clicking but it has also made many

lives worse or even worst. Many children/minors have been exploited, many innocent minds have been corrupted and yet, many businessmen are still supporting and investing in this industry because there are many patronizers. And so, instead of going to school, many students and tempted to grab the opportunity of be educated by these things until their minds have been completely filled with corruption. And finally, pride of life. Pride is also a problem nowadays and humility in our society slowly diminishes. Friends and peers greatly affect the attitude of a person, especially the youth. If you want to be in and cool, you should obey a set of standards. Some of these standards include, skipping school for pleasures, going to parties late at night especially during school days that might lead to a students absence to her class because of a hangover and other factors. This is called peer-pressure. All of this, just to fit in but God does not teach us to fit in but to STAND OUT for Him. If we really love God, we should flee from everything He hates and we should draw near to everything He loves and commands in that way, we could see His prepared path for us. As a student, I learned that anywhere you go temptations and lusts is lurking everywhere in the form of television, to computer gaming, to peers and many more which lead students become truants. If a person is mature enough to resist this situation, he can also flee from the temptations that are pulling him astray. I hope this essay will be a real awakening for the students who are slaking off in their classes to get real with their studies. Because I know that no one is stupid they are just paying lazy. All we need is just a bit of extra hope to get us through the hard days.
