Activity Worksheet No ___________ The Sun as the Primary Source of Heat and Light Objective: Infer the sun gives off heat and light to the earth. I. Observation: Get objects under the sun and objects under the shade. Get out of the room. Look for some objects under the sun and those under the shade. Touch the object under the sun and compare them with the objects under the shade. Record your observation in a chart like this. What did you touch? How do you feel the objects under the sun? How do you feel the objects under the shade?

II. Questions 1. What are the objects that you touched under the sun? 2. What did you feel when you touched them? 3. Why do you think these objects are hot? 4. What are the objects that you touched under the shade? 5. What did you feel when you touched them? 6. What help your eyes see objects under the sun and under the shade? III. Hypothesis The objects that we touched under the sun are very hot and the objects under the shade are cool. The heat we fell comes from the sun. The light comes from the sun help us see objects under the sun and under the shade.

IV. Experiment: What you need: Flashlight (represents the sun), Globe, red cut-out of a person, self-adhesive tape. What you have to do: 1. Stick the cut-out on the globe. Place it on the Philippines 2. Place the globe 2 feet away from the flashlight. Position the globe so that the Philippines faces the flashlight. 3. Turn on the flashlight. What does the person in the Philippines experience, a day or night? Do you feel the heat effect of the sun early in the morning? Why? 4. Now turn the globe counter clockwise. When the sun faces in the other side of the globe, what do we experience? 5. Keep on rotating the globe slowly. Observe what do people all over the world experience? Guided Questions: While the other parts are dark, why is it that some part of the earth is lighted? Why do we experience day and night? When is it warm or hot, during the day or during the night? Why is it cool in the morning and then it turns warm at noon and it gets cold again at night? What helps us see objects around during the day? Where does this heat and light come from? V. Result, Discussion, Analysis and Interpretation of Data Where does heat and light on earth come from? (The sun is the primary source of heat and light on earth) When does the sun gives off heat and light to the earth? (Sun brightens the earth at daytime. At the same time, the energy from the sun also gives heat to the earth.) What do you think would happen to the earth if theres no sun? (People, plants, and animals would die.) Interpretation of Data

As the earth turns around, one part is facing the sun and the other half is away from the sun. The part that faces the sun experiences daytime. It is hot and warm. The other half that is away from the sun experiences night time which is cold.

VI Conclusion I therefore conclude that the sun is the primary source of heat and light on earth. Although the sun is far away, its light and heat reach the earth. When the sun heats the earth, it also heats the air that surrounds the earth. The sun does not only keeps the earth warm but also gives light to earth. Sunlight provides light energy and heat energy. VI. Application Draw the sun. Show how it gives heat and light. VII. Test Yourself Directions: Read and answer each questions very carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer. 1. Which is the primary source of heat and light? 2. Why do we feel warm during daytime? 3. What words describe the sun? 4. We see objects clearly at daytime because of the ____________. 5. What do you feel when the sun is shining very bright? VIII. Investigate More Draw or cut out a picture of the sun. Write two or three sentences about it.
