LOCAL NEWS and EVENTS 28 April Saturday Biological and Soil Carbon Farming Field Day Ravensbourne and District Landcare Group, together with the Toowoomba Landcare Group will be conducting a series of field days and workshops in biological farming principles in Ravensbourne, Hampton districts as part of their community action grant. This will provide local landholders with an exciting alternative to traditional production practices.This will be a rare opportunity to talk with sustainable farming experts. Pasture Management Field Days


A series of free Pasture Management Field Days are being held across the Upper & Mid-Brisbane River catchments in April and May 2012. The days will focus on managing and monitoring native and sown pastures to maintain good land condition, and thereby maximise the profitability and sustainability of grazing businesses. Damien OSullivan, from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI), will be discussing: grazing management, principles to balance pasture growth, utilisation & animal performance; using indicator species to assess and monitor pasture condition; when to consider sown pastures; suitable pasture & legumes for different land types in SEQ; and tips for successful establishment and management of sown pastures. The field days are being delivered through SEQ Catchments current Caring For Our Country project Achieving Groundcover targets in SEQ and are part of SEQ Catchments ongoing sustainable grazing program. A successful pasture management field day held recently at Upper Yarraman covered topics was attended by a number of landholders. The topics listed above were explored and landholders were given an opportunity to discuss their experiences with these techniques to date.

We will be investigating the microorganisms living in the rhizophore against those that live in bulk soil. It would be good if participants could bring along some fresh green plants ( legumes preferable) on the day. Spencer Shaw and Brendan Stephen will use their knowledge to share observations and discuss the positive values some weeds can provide to habitat restoration.
