Team Handbook
2009
Table of Contents
• Communication
• Team Spirit
• Absence Policies
• Swim Meets
Our goal each year is to give you as much information in many different forms. We want every
family to know what is going on throughout the season. Listed below are the different forms of
communication we will use this summer.
Team Handbook - This includes all the nuts and bolts of the team. Standard
schedules, team events, and fun activities.
Rain-Out Line - Once again we will have a rainout line to check on days of
inclement weather. The number is (913) 385 – 4686.
Mail Boxes - Mail boxes will be used for ribbons and other out going info.
Make it habit to check boxes daily.
If you do not know the answer to a question, please contact one of the coaches.
Team Spirit
Meet Themes
Themes will be developed each week including the city championship. The coaching staff has
some great ideas and promises to be fun for all. Theme titles will be announced and put into
each family’s mailbox. This is a great way to show your team spirit and get excited for the
meets.
Pizza Parties
After each competitive meet, the team goes out together to have pizza. This is a great way to
get to know other families and for your children to enjoy their summer experiences. Though
not mandatory, we encourage all team members to join us to promote team unity and
camaraderie.
Our pizza hangout for the last few years has been at the Pizza Shoppe on 95th. They charge a
flat rate for a pizza buffet and drinks. Pizza Shoppe does a great job to accommodate us for our
late hours.
If someone is absent and no written notification has been turned in or phone call made to the
coaches, that swimmer will only be allowed to swim one race the following meet. Because we
are a big team we need to be organized and be able to give everyone the opportunity to
compete. By not showing up it may cost a swimmer the opportunity to swim a relay event or a
diver not to be able to dive at that meet.
If you already know of any dates that your family will be gone, please let us know now so we
can start our organization process.

Practice Schedule
Rain-out Policy
To help alleviate the communication problems, the city has set up a rain-out line. The Rain-out
Line number is (913) 385 – 4686. Notification will be recorded by 7:15 am for the 7:45
practices and 8:30 am – for the 9:00 practices during the course of the season.
Practice Curriculum
The primary focus for two days a week will be on technique and drills along with racing skills.
The other two days will focus on training, skill refinement and relays.
The practice will begin with the coach’s talk, and the team members will be able to play games
or use the slides and diving boards. At the end of practice we hand out donuts to each swimmer
and diver. Each family gives $5 for the season to take care of the cost of the donuts.
Time Trials
On Friday June 5th at 8:00 am will be having time trials for all groups. Those who can attend
will need to notify the coaches ahead of time plan and plan to make up their time trials on
Thursday, June 4th or Monday, June 7th during practice.
Ocean’s of Fun
On Friday, June 26th the team will head to Ocean’s of Fun for a fun filled day. We will not
have team practice at the PV pool for that day. A registration form is included in the team hand
book and needs to be turned in by Friday, June 12th to coaching staff.
Swim Meets
Age Groups – June 1st determines your child’s age group for participation.
7 & Under
9 & Under
11 & Under
13 & Under
15 & Under
18 & Under
Events
Each age group will swim all four strokes; Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle.
They will also swim one relay per age group.
Participation
Dual Meets - allow 3-4 swimmers and relay teams per event
Triangular Meets - allow 5 swimmers and 2 relays per team per event
All City - allow the top 3 swimmers and 1 relay team per event
Since we are a big team we try to work with other teams to allow more entries to give
opportunities for everyone to participate.
Meet Selection Process
The meet selection process will be fair and equitable. The goal is to give everyone an
opportunity to compete and improve. Each meet allows the team different amounts of
swimmers per event depending on the number of teams and lanes. Some age groups have many
swimmers, therefore making it challenging to allow many races for the swimmers. We will do
our best to make sure every swimmer gets an opportunity to swim in all meets except All City
where the league limits each team’s entries. For dual and triangular meets we will have
challenge swims the Friday before the next Thursday’s meet to help determine the line-up.
Please make sure to communicate whether you will not be attending the upcoming week(s)
meet so they can administer the line-up entry process accurately.
Challenge Swims
Challenge Swims are done individually and timed by the coaches with no bias. If a swimmer
improves their time and swims faster than someone eligible to swim the meet, they gain the spot
unless their time is bettered by another challenge swim. Make-up for challenge swims will be
on Monday only for those swimmers who previously had their time bettered by another
swimmer and they are swimming to retain their own spot.
Again, our goal is to have as many swimmers able to compete as possible. Some meets will
allow extra heats to accommodate larger age groups. Swimmers who do not qualify
individually for and have outstanding attendance will most likely earn spots on relays for
various meets. The coaching staff will help promote as much participation in competitions as
other teams allow.
