Shambhala Training
Shambhala Training is a secular meditation training that helps us develop fearlessness, confidence and openness toward others and ourselves. The training path begins with a series of Heart of Warriorship weekends that help to establish a personal meditation practice. Each program includes meditation instruction and practice, talks on Shambhala teachings, group discussions, and individual meetings with a teacher. Shambhala teachings recognize that human wisdom and basic goodness do not belong to any one religion or doctrine. Shambhala welcomes people of all religious traditions, as well as those who do not follow a particular spiritual path.

Awareness Through Moving and Stillness:

Feldenkrais and Meditation
Kim Hansen & Katharine Kaufman

This weekend retreat offers a rare pairing of the gently focused Feldenkrais Method combined with sitting meditation. The Feldenkrais method works with gentle novel movements that stay within a range that is easy. We will also explore lying, standing and walking practices, allowing us to enrich our options of response to our current conditions. We will experience dynamic alignment and shine a light on the multiple ways of doing any task. As we practice alternative ways of inhabiting our circumstances based on connection rather than isolation, we have the opportunity to understand natural elegance and direct, unencumbered movement and stillness. This weekend is open to all and is particularly beneficial to those with challenging physical conditions.
Tuition $170 + 2 nights Kim Hansen, MFA, is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner, a massage therapist, and a long-time movement teacher. She was on the dance faculty at The University of Colorado, Regis College and Running River Elementary School, and has taught people to swim, rehabilitate after disease and injuries, couple creative movement with academic disciplines, and to build community around body awareness and self-care. Katharine Kaufman is a senior yoga teacher in Boulder, Colorado. She taught and practiced for many years with Wendy Bramlett and Richard Freeman, and studied in South India. She holds an MFA degree in Performance and Choreography and is an adjunct faculty member at Naropa University where she teaches Contemplative Movement Arts and studies poetry. Katharine is a priest ordained in the Soto Zen Buddhist lineage.

Advanced Tibetan Cranial Apprentice Program

Authentic Leadership:
Mindfulness at Work Boulder Talk
Susan Skjei

Self-Healing
Charley Cropley

A nearly extinct energetic healing modality passed down orally from Tibetan monks throughout the centuries, Tibetan Cranial (TC) work reconnects us to our inherent healing capacity. While maintaining a state of prayer or mantra, practitioners read hundreds of pulses, and then fine tune bones in the skull, jaw, palate and neck. This work has been shown to alleviate suffering and promote a profound sense of well-being. Yoga and meditation will be taught as part of the fiveday retreat so that apprentices can develop a daily spiritual practice to support their work. This is an advanced TC apprenticeship program. Before registering, you must experience an individual TC session from one of our practitioners or Shar Lee, have been accepted as a TC Apprentice, and attend the TC beginners program. See our practitioners listed by location, and details about the program at: www.tibetancranial.com. For more information call 720-378-8044.
Tuition $1000 + 5 nights Shar Lee, CYI, has been teaching yoga and Buddhist meditation internationally since 1966. After studying Zen Buddhism in the United States, she studied Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal with several esteemed lamas. In 1987, she began training in Tibetan Cranial work with Lama Dorje in Kathmandu, Nepal.

How do we engage with difficult or challenging situations in the workplace? What does it take to be present, resilient and responsive to those around us and to the complexities we encounter every day on the job? Mindfulness practice offers immediate access to our own authenticity and to the courage and confidence that arise from that experience. We will explore three ways leaders can build capacity for resilience in the face of constant change. This talk will be held 79pm at Naropa University, Nalanda Events Center, 6287 Arapahoe Avenue, Boulder. Susan Skjei is offering an Authentic Leadership Workshop at Shambhala Mountain Center October 17 20, see page 13.
Tuition $15 Acharya Susan Skjei is an educator, executive coach and consultant specializing in leadership and transformative change. Formerly a Vice President of Learning and Development for a large technology company, she currently directs the Authentic Leadership program at Naropa University and consults internationally through her company Sane Systems. Susan is skilled at fostering inclusive and empowering learning experiences.

The cause of our health problems is not cancer or colitis, weak adrenals or a lowered immune system. The cause of our health problems is the innocent, ignorant misuse of our own body and mind. In this retreat you will learn to wisely use your power to eat, move, think and relate. For two days you will practice deliberately imbuing these most ordinary daily activities with intelligence and caring. You will see unmistakably the healing power you have and how to wield it to revitalize your body and mind.
Tuition $180 + 2 nights Charley Cropley, ND, is a naturopathic physician who after 35 years of practice, uses no medicines. He teaches his clients that they are endowed with selfhealing capacities exactly equal to their condition. They learn that illness itself is what heals them. It awakens their love of themselves and guides them in the heroic work of healing their own self-harming ways.

Refuge and Bodhisattva Vow Ceremony Retreat

Acharya Allyn Lyon

Opening the Good Eye:

An Introduction to Miksang Photography
Michael Wood and Julie DuBose

This weekend is an opportunity for those ready to commit themselves to the Refuge Vow or Bodhisattva Vow in a profound and beautiful retreat environment. The Refuge Vow marks the decision to commit oneself wholeheartedly to the Buddhist path and to further ones practice and training. It is the formal commitment to being a Buddhist, following the example of the Buddha Shakyamuni, his teachings (the dharma) and joining the community (sangha) of fellow practitioners. The Bodhisattva Vow is a commitment to put others before oneself and to work wholeheartedly for their benefit. The basis of this vow is the aspiration to develop friendliness, compassion, and genuine insight through the practice of the six paramitas generosity, discipline, patience, exertion, meditation, and prajna. See website for prerequisites.
Tuition $108 + 1 night Acharya Allyn Lyon is a senior teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition. She has served as director of Shambhala Mountain Center and has taught at Vajradhatu Seminary. Allyn has traveled and taught extensively in Europe, the U.S. and Mexico, as well as at Naropa University. Allyn is known for the clarity and directness of her teaching and for her irreverent sense of humor.

This retreat is an introduction to the practice of Miksang Contemplative Photography as developed by Michael Wood and Julie DuBose. If you would like to be able to express your full and complete experience of seeing through your camera, this course is for you. Through visual exercises, assignments, discussion, and sharing of images, we learn how to recognize our experience of direct visual perception. Direct in this case means without the filters of our habitual ways of seeing and experiencing our world. This is not purely a photography course. It is about developing the ability to see our world in a fresh way so that we have an experience that we are passionate about expressing with our camera. This is the beginning of a journey through our world with our eyes, mind, and heart united in the experience of communion with our visual world and the expression of that through our camera. Please go to miksang.com for course details.
Tuition $375 + 4 nights Introductory Evening at the Ft Collins Shambhala Center, with Julie DuBose and Michael Wood: September 13, 6:308:30pm Michael Wood is the original developer and teacher of Miksang, and co-author of The Practice of Contemplative Photography: Seeing the World with Fresh Eyes. Michael resides in Canada and is currently acting as a Management Consultant and Curriculum Development Advisor to the Miksang Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Julie DuBose began her study of Miksang with Michael Wood in 1998 and has been teaching since 2000. She founded the Miksang Institute for Contemplative Photography in Boulder, Colorado and Miksang Publications in 2012. She is the author of Effortless Beauty: Photography as an Expression of Eye, Mind, and Heart.

The Shamans Heart:

An Awakening of Compassion, Healing and Vision
Don Oscar Miro-Quesada & Byron Metcalf

Authentic Leadership Workshop

Susan Skjei

Tibetan Cranial has a rich and ancient history originating in the Himalayan highlands approximately 2000 years ago. Before the Chinese invasion of Tibet, this healing modality was flourishing; after the invasion, it nearly became extinct. Today the work is surviving through the efforts of master teacher Shar Lee, who teaches the advanced trainings to continuing apprentices, and the Tibetan Cranial Association. Tibetan Cranial reconnects us to our inherent healing capacity. It is a healing modality that focuses on fine-tuning the bones in the skull, neck and jaw based on pulse reading in order to alleviate great suffering and promote a profound sense of well-being. Yoga and meditation are taught as part of the five-day retreat in order to develop and enhance ones daily spiritual practice in support of the Tibetan Cranial practice. Visit tibetancranial.com for training pre-requisites as well as requirements for the Tibetan Cranial Apprenticeship.
Tuition $1000 + 5 nights Heidi Nordlund is an advanced Tibetan Cranial practitioner trained by master teacher and lineage holder Shar Lee. Heidi is also an advanced Ayurvedic Practitioner. Her spiritual practice is grounded in the science of Kriya Yoga meditation. In addition to practicing and teaching Tibetan Cranial and Ayurveda, Heidi is a certified Postpartum AyurDoula, Yoga therapist and Yoga instructor.

Two seasoned navigators of shamanic realms artfully orchestrate this heartfelt initiation into the sacred dimensions of life. Merging ancient and contemporary healing ceremonies and rhythmic techniques, they will guide participants in a journey of encounter with the inner and outer landscapes of their soul. Deep journey explorations and integrative teachings will focus on: the journey within, as within, so without, life as ceremony, the ascent, a sacred hoop, and more.
Tuition $235 + 2 nights Byron Metcalf, PhD, is the creator of The Shamans Heart Program and an awardwinning professional musician and shamanic practitioner. For nearly three decades, he has been involved in consciousness research, specializing in the transformative potential of music and sound and expanded states of consciousness. Don Oscar Miro-Quesada is a respected Peruvian kamasqa curandero, OAS Fellow in Ethnopsychology, originator of the Pachakuti Mesa cross-cultural shamanism, and founder of The Heart of the Healer Foundation. A popular international teacher and master ceremonialist, his work has been featured on CNN, Univision, A&E, and the Discovery Channel.

This workshop provides an introduction to Authentic Leadership a powerful approach to personal and professional development that can increase leadership capacity for clarity, compassion and effective action in life and at work. Drawing on the disciplines of neuroscience, Buddhism, complexity science, organizational learning and leadership, the workshop offers proven methods and practices that help leaders cultivate self-awareness and creativity, strengthen and enhance their relationships with others and effectively lead the changes they want to see in their organizations and in the world. The program will include meditation practice, contemplative dialogue and experiences in the natural environment.
Tuition $275 + 3 nights See Susans bio on page 11.

Flow Like Water, Strong as a Mountain:

A Tai Chi Retreat Denver Program
Larry Welsh

It seems we all agree that training the body through exercise, diet and relaxation is a good idea but why dont we think about training our minds? This weekend retreat will give accessible and powerful meditation practice techniques to help us find peace within ourselves while developing a strong and flexible mind. We will draw from Turning the Mind Into an Ally, the best-selling book by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, as we explore this question together in a contemplative and nurturing environment. You will receive a copy of this book at the retreat.
Tuition $140 + 2 nights Greg Smith, a well-known sangha artist and thangka painter, has lived and painted at Shambhala Mountain Center for many years. He has been a student of meditation since 1976, first with Chgyam Trungpa and later with his son Sakyong Mipham. Greg has taught meditation and Buddhist studies since 1982.

Our earliest precognitive experiences can deeply impact the formation of our identity and set patterns of behavior that can derail our later relationships, parenting and work. Without necessarily knowing how or why, we find ourselves creating and reacting to situations that do not support our greatest good, or that of others. During this retreat, we will learn to identify, unravel and realign some of these adaptive behaviors, drawing on simple yet powerful techniques of bodybased repatterning, reflection and emotional inquiry. We will begin to heal trust/mistrust issues, repair compromised thinking, and discover ways to support ongoing alignment, confidence, and compassion. From the healing ground of our weekend, reengage your relationships, work and daily life with fresh understanding, wholeness and integrated presence.
Tuition $165 + 2 nights Annie Brook, PhD, LPC, brings 30+ years of study, practice, and teaching of meditation, movement awareness, ritual, and group process. Annie is an author and international speaker, and was the former Director of the Body Psychotherapy track for Naropa Universitys MA in Somatic Psychology. She co-owns Colorado Therapies where she trains interns and practitioners in BodyMind Somanautics.

Tai Chi Chuan has been described as the supreme ultimate exercise. When joined with mindfulness sitting meditation practice, these two art forms bring forth a powerful way to cultivate health throughout each day of our lives by restoring well-being in body, mind, and spirit. Learn how to enhance flow, flexibility, strength, relationships and deep peace. Discover the wellspring of your own intrinsic health and sanity through learning the 4 Foundations of Mindfulness and authentic relaxation. For all ages. See website for times and location.
Tuition $160 Larry Welsh, MAc, MA, has trained in the Yang-style short form, listening hands and sword form of Tai Chi Chuan since 1977. Seeing the One World with Two Eyes:

A Su Experiential Retreat
Elias Amidon

Beginning the path of meditation is an ideal opportunity to embrace the wisdom of everyday experience with great patience, openness, and compassion. In this dynamic and practical retreat, we will explore how meditation practice embraces all areas of our lives with depth and wisdom. Drawing from the Buddhist insight traditions, we will learn the essential qualities of taking our meditation practice far beyond the cushion, allowing us to remain fearless amidst the day-to-day flow of our lives, inviting our hearts and minds to expand and radiate with compassion and intelligence, and ultimately opening to our true nature. No previous meditation experience is necessary.
Tuition $175 + 2 nights Thomas Roberts, a Zen Buddhist and psychotherapist, has led dynamic, refreshing, and practical retreats on mind-body healing and meditation practices for over 30 years. This retreat will draw from his book The Mindfulness Book: A Beginners Guide to Overcoming Fear and Embracing Compassion.

At this time of year we give thanks for all our blessings, but if, as the Buddhists say, theres no God to thank, are we just talking to ourselves? If we have been touched by the realization of the nondual nature of Being, can we still worship? Pir Elias Amidon will guide us in how to vibrantly live the paradoxes of love and emptiness, the Divine and the Unborn, action and non-effort, and how we live simultaneously in time and timelessness, mortality and deathlessness. Our primary focus will be direct experience of the resolution of these paradoxes in our lives, to learn, as Rumi said, to see the one world with two eyes. We will explore the essence of Sufi teachings, practices, poetry, and musical meditation while drawing insights from Dzogchen, Zen, Advaita, and the Abrahamic religions. Our goal is the relinquishing of goal-making, learning to live without attachments but nevertheless wholeheartedly, gratefully, and playfully.
Tuition $165 + 2 nights Elias Amidon is the spiritual director (Pir) of the Sufi Way and a long-time Buddhist. Author of the book The Open Path Recognizing Nondual Awareness, and co-editor of the books Earth Prayers, Life Prayers, and Prayers for a Thousand Years, he has worked for many years in the fields of peace and environmental activism in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. He continues to travel widely teaching Open Path and Sufi Way programs.

The Descent:
The Creative Power of the Dark
Elizabeth Rabia Roberts

In this retreat we will refine and deepen our yoga practice by utilizing the breath, steadying the gaze, and aligning the body. Our practice will allow us to listen and become more aware of our superficial mind and habitual patterns. As habitual patterns arise, there is an opportunity to see them for what they are concepts and ideas. In this process, the energy that was previously deployed in identifying with these ideas is released, resulting in greater freedom and energy. Not only do we experience greater joy, but we begin to respond, rather than react, to our challenges. Through asana, pranayama, meditation and contemplation, we will come to understand better how we can free up the vital life force that is essential for living a vibrant and healthy life.
Tuition $175 + 2 nights Jeanie Manchester, ERYT 500, Director of Anjaneya Yoga Shala in Boulder, has been studying modern dance and yoga for the past 30 years, and offers yoga immersions, trainings and retreats. Jeanie has extensively studied Ashtanga Vinyasa, Iyengar and Anusara Yoga systems. She is an avid student of meditation as well as the Shri Vidya Goddess Wisdom of South India. Billy Goldman began studying yoga in 1981 with Richard Freeman and has been teaching since 1994. He has also studied extensively with K. Pattabhi Jois, senior Iyengar instructor Gabriella Giubilaro, among others. His classes are a comfortable mix of sharing the details of alignment in the postures with a visceral understanding of the internal feelings that act as cues to movement within each posture.

Winter is not a failed summer! Dark times are a natural part of our physical, psychological, and spiritual experience. What if darkness is not a failure, but instead a restorative and creative time in which we have access to previously hidden realizations? Wisdom traditions throughout history have given us myths and teachings that offer capacities for navigating these dark nights of the soul. Darkness means that we cant see with our usual sight, but are plunged into the well of mystery, of not-knowing, where we no longer see things from the outside as a witness. Instead we depend on the grace of an inner dark light, seen only by us, that offers the possibility of spring and redemption. During this weekend we will explore how to move through our own dark nights, and be able to help guide others through this process.
Tuition $165 + 2 nights Elizabeth Rabia Roberts is a spiritual teacher, citizen activist, and specialist in non-formal education. She began this work in 1964 in Selma with Dr. Martin Luther King, and since then has taught and served in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Burma, among others. Take a Leap into 2014:

Establish Your Intention and Commitment
Jon Barbieri

What do writers want more than anything in the world? Time to write. Yet even if such precious time could be found, its not always easy to settle into the writing groove. Meditation can help synchronize mind and body in a way that truly supports the creative process. In addition to plenty of personal writing time, quiet, and the supportive (but non-intrusive!) presence of other writers, this program will include meditation instruction and discussion of how to create and maintain a practice at home. Evenings provide the option to share and discuss your work with others, if you would like. Open to writers of fiction and non-fiction, published and unpublished. Please note that the majority of time will be spent writing rather than doing writing exercises. Thus this program is best for those who wish to begin, continue, or complete a particular project. Bring your ideas, works-in-progress, or simply your wish to devote attention to your creativity.
Tuition $210 + 3 nights Susan Piver is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including the award-winning How Not to Be Afraid of Your Own Life and The Wisdom of a Broken Heart. She is an authorized teacher and meditation instructor in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage and has practiced meditation for over 15 years. Susan leads retreats and teaches around the world. In 2011, Piver launched The Open Heart Project, which offers an online course of meditation instruction to thousands of at-home practitioners.

Join us for this special program and allow your aspirations for the New Year to become clear, confident and committed through reflection and renewal. Our gathering will include meditation, contemplative practices, and open time to rest and reflect. On New Years Eve we will celebrate with a delicious full-course dinner.

Prerequisite: Completion of Shambhala Training Level II Please see website for tuition information Denise Wuensch began practicing Buddhism in the tradition of Chgyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, in 1975. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and an adjunct faculty for Naropa Universitys Contemplative Psychotherapy Masters Degree program. Denise currently teaches in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage and has been serving as Head of Household for Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche since 1994. She lives in Denver, Colorado where she works as a psychotherapist in private practice.

Why are other people so hard to work with? Why is it so difficult to get things done? And what about changing the course of history so that we dont destroy ourselves and our planet in the meantime? If you find yourself asking these questions, and wishing there was another way of living and working with others, you might have a lot to offer during this weekend of learning and practicing The Six Ways of Ruling. This unique stream of the Shambhala teachings on Enlightened Society directly addresses the panic, greed and aggression of our times. The Six Ways of Ruling also offer an experimental approach for surviving, transforming and working with the challenges we face at home, at work and in ourselves. Originally transmitted in secret, these teachings are now being offered as a public weekend program led by the President of Shambhala, Richard Reoch.
Tuition $180 + 2 nights Richard Reoch is the former media chief of Amnesty International, the human rights organization, and a lifelong campaigner for peace and the environment. His work has taken him to conflict zones around the world. As the President of Shambhala, he has a wealth of experience in applying The Six Ways of Ruling and now travels widely sharing his insights with others.

February 19 23 BODY AWARENESS

Precious Knowing:
A Meditation and Yoga Retreat for Women
Katharine Kaufman

Our bodies hold emotions, images, patterns and stories. When we learn to fully inhabit our bodies through mindfulness practices, we can know ourselves as complete and wakeful beings. To do this, we will practice sitting meditation, flowing and restorative yoga and playful improvisational movement. We will deepen our practice and insight through silent mornings, alone and together, and our community will develop understanding and trust during evening talking circles. Previous yoga or meditation experience recommended.
Tuition $260 + 4 nights

See Katherines bio on page 6.
