-2QUESTION 1

NOV 2010 RE-EXAM/SMT211T/SMT101T

A cast iron pipe with an outside diameter of 300 mm and 25 mm thickness is used as a short column 1.5 m long. The inside of the column is filled with concrete. If the column is to carry a compressive load of 900 kN, calculate the stresses induced in the cast iron and concrete as well as the amount by which the column shortens. Ecast iron = 140 GPa and Econcrete = 14 GPa. /12/ QUESTION 2 Two steel wires, AB and BC, support a lamp weighing 80 N as shown below. Wire AB is at an angle = 480. Both wires have a cross sectional area of 4.56 10-7 m2 each. Determine the tensile stresses in wires AB and BC.

QUESTION 3 A solid steel shaft, 90 mm in diameter is coupled in series to a hollow steel shaft with an external diameter of 100 mm and an internal diameter of 90 mm. Calculate the torsional stiffness of a 1-m length of each of these shafts if they are used separately and compare this with the torsional stiffness of a 1-m length of the compound shaft consisting of a 0.5-m length of each of the shafts mentioned above. G = 80 GPa.

/16/ QUESTION 4 A compound spring consists of two steel springs that are arranged one inside the other. The outer spring has a wire diameter of 4 mm and a mean coil diameter of 40 mm. The inner spring has a wire diameter of 3 mm, a mean coil diameter of 30 mm, 10 coils and is 5 mm shorter than the outer spring. Calculate: (a) The stiffness of the compound spring if the deflection caused by the load is

(b) The number of coils in the outer spring if a load of 82 N compresses the compound spring by 12 mm; (c) The maximum shear stress in each spring. G = 81 GPa. /20/ QUESTION 5 For the beam ABCDE shown below: a) Determine the reactions at the supports; b) Draw the Shear Force diagram; c) Draw the Bending Moment diagram; d) Find the maximum Shear Force and maximum Bending Moment; e) Calculate the point(s) of contraflexure from A. QUESTION 6 A bolier tube is of 50 mm internal diameter and is made of a material with a density of 7.8 x 10-6kg/mm3, and the maximum permissible stress is 120 MPa. If the tube is to withstand an internal pressure of 4 MPa, determine the mass of the tube per unit length. /8/

NOV 2010 RE-EXAM/SMT211T/SMT101T

A cable and pulley system in figure part (a) supports a cage of mass 300 kg at B. Assume that this includes the mass of the cables as well. The thickness of each of the three steel pulleys is t = 40 mm. The pin diameters are dpA = 25 mm, dpB = 30 mm and dpC = 22 mm [see figure, parts (a) and part (b)]. (a) Find expressions for the resultant forces acting on the pulleys at A, B, and C in terms of cable tension T. (3) (b) What is the maximum weight W that can be added to the cage at B based on the following allowable stresses? Shear stress in the pins is 50 MPa; bearing stress between the pin and the pulley is 110 MPa. (6)
