RIVER RHYTHMS- Valley Artisans Market, located at 25 East Main Street in Cambridge, NY, is joining in the spirit of Hubbard Hall's River Rhythms Project. Throughout August and well into September, Artists at VAM are showing artwork to reflect the River Rhythms theme. Hubbard Hall Projects events all summer are leading to the culminating performance of the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company at Hubbard Hall on September 21, 2013. VAM's members are widening the concept of waterways with swamp maple bowls, rivers rendered in pastels and oils, flowing jewelry, toys that float, glass, pottery, paper and more. The Small Gallery, located at the back of Valley Artisans Market has two water-related exhibits now through September 21. Currently showing, the paintings of Adriano Manocchia are accompanied by his book Water, Sky & Time. Next, the Lanchantin family's exhibit Rivers, Rocks, and Roads will express watery ideas in stone sculptures by Bill and drawings & paintings by Leslie and their daughter Laura. The opening reception for the Lanchantin's is August 24, from 3-5PM. The public is warmly invited to explore all of these artists' responses to the River Rhythms theme at Valley Artisans Market. VAM is a member-owned cooperative with 32 years of providing the community with beautifully made art in many forms and mediums. For more information about the River Rhythms Project at VAM phone Bonliz Hoag at 518-854-7764. We have an on-site extensive genealogy library available. For information call 279-4024 or view us at http://www.bhs-ny.org NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation are documented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the Washington County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York. For further information call 518-747-9108 or email wchs@wchs-ny.org.
