Misconceptions Students may mistakenly believe when you round an exact answer, you are estimating. One should estimate first. Students may mistakenly believe that a fraction becomes a percent when you divide. You must divide the numerator by the denominator and then convert a decimal to a percent by moving the decimal point two places to the right. Students may mistakenly believe that a percent has two decimal places. A percent can have any number of decimal places. Students may mistakenly believe that to turn a fraction into a decimal you always divide by the smaller number. Students should always divide the numerator by the denominator. Students may mistakenly believe that they do not need to convert the percent into a decimal when solving a ( i = prt ) problem. Students may mistakenly believe that they can use months in place of time when solving a ( i = prt ) problem. Students must express time in years.
