Chapter 1: Introduction
Living in a technological era, we have access to the tabloids more than ever before. There are television sets, magazine covers, Internet blogs, and movies screaming to be read and watched, and they are plastered with images of these tacky celebrities. When a life of parties, short-term relationships, drugs, and alcohol are leading celebrities like Britney, Paris, and Lindsay to spiral out of control, you would think that their lifestyle is not ideal. But, fans of these stars disagree. Now, in an age where we have more contact with celebrity gossip than we have ever had, we are faced with a question: what are the effects that superstars have on our youth? Celebrities influence fans to be destructively thin, put harmful substances in their bodies, and many parents are concerned with the overall content these celebrities are putting on television, in movies, and over the Internet. Pop culture idols need to think twice before making a poor decision or practicing awful morals because of their influence on their young fans and other people who may look up to them.

Based on a recent Newsweek poll, 77% of Indians believe that celebrities have too much of an influence on young girls. This effect is especially evident in their appearance and attitudes. One poll participant, a first grade teacher, even noticed her students using derogatory language, singing suggestive song lyrics, and even flirting with each other. With celebrities creating impossible standards of beauty, more and more young adults are feeling 'less confident, more angry, and more dissatisfied' with their looks (National Institute on Media and the Family). Based on a poll, 40% of nine and ten year-olds had tried losing weight and at age thirteen (Body Image and Gender Identity, 2002), 53% of girls were unhappy with their image (National Institute on Media and the Family). Now, this cannot all be blamed on the media, but with celebrities becoming thinner and thinner, much self-confidence is lost and images of television stars or models have been connected to body displeasure (National Institute on Media and the Family). Stars need to be concerned about their image because of the unpleasant fact that it causes young fans to strive to be unhealthily thin. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that eating disorders affect more than five million Indians a year, with disorders usually beginning in the teens or as early as eight. Celebrities should stay at a safe weight to insure their health and the effects their weight has in influencing their younger viewers.

Based on the latest Kaiser Family Foundation survey, two in every three parents feel that their children are being exposed to too much inappropriate content in the media. Where does this concern come from? 34% of parents stated that they believe that television contain the most inappropriate content. With television shows today including sexual content, violence, and adult language, children are exposed to unsuitable matter for their ages. Since many parents work and are not always at home, kids have access to shows, movies, and the internet blogs that can tell them things that should be left for parents to explain. There is no possible way to end this media frenzy, but experts say that 'attentive parents, strong teachers and nice friends are an excellent counterbalance,' (Newsweek, 2007) to pop culture garbage. Stars need to be more aware of their images because some are allowing younger fans content that many parents do not want their child seeing.

Celebrities do not only have a negative impact on the looks and personalities of fans, but also in their health. With superstars like Kate Moss taking insane amounts of drugs, Amy Winehouse checking into rehab again, and movie stars lighting up their cigarettes on screen, there has to be some effect on their admirers. 88% to 92% of the top twenty-five box office hits since 1995 have contained tobacco use. Celebrities have glamorized smoking in the media and are setting an example for supporters everywhere that it is acceptable to smoke. Pop culture icons need to support a drug free program instead of using harmful substances. Programs like Above the Influence, run by the Office of National Drug Protection, use the media for good instead of making drugs and alcohol seems acceptable to use. Stars should make it a goal to refrain from using drugs and drinking excessive amounts of booze because it sends a message to fans that a life of drugs and alcohol is a satisfactory way to live.

Celebrities need to change the way they act and how they are viewed. Their actions have more of an effect on us then many people believe they have. Thin, addicted celebrities are changing the way many young fans think and act. Celebrities need to change these horrible habits now and realize that they need to be more concerned with themselves and with their portrayal in the media.

Chapter 2: Literature Review

The Positive and Negative Influences of Celebrity Culture Celebrities possess a strong power to influence the lifestyle trends of their collective audience. They are members of the entertainment industry and are looked up to as role models by a large proximity of the general public. The word celebrity is derived from the word celebrate, in that a person is supposedly famous because the community celebrates him or her (Rockwell 2004). Their lives are well documented by the media and in turn they have a great deal of power in shaping the ideologies of their audience. It is through convergence of media tools that enable the status and reputation of each celebrity, great or small, to develop rapidly. With such high exposure due to the globalised world that we live in, celebrities essentially hold the power to positively or negatively influence their followers. From fashion trends to behavioural tendencies, the attitudes and lifestyle habits of celebrities influence cultural dispositions and the way in which many people function within society.

To some extent, heavy consumers of entertainment media parallel their lives on the very people that inundate the gossip section of newspapers. (Tunbridge, 2012). Though we might not have their wealth or fame, we might feel that through consuming goods celebrities might favour, and living a lifestyle we see as similar to theirs, that we are achieving some degree of upward mobility by joining an elite status community (Sternheimer, 2011). Celebrity influence of the public can be exemplified by societys response to the globalised event that is the FIFA world cup. High profile players like David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo use the worlds biggest sporting event not only to demonstrate their skills but to boast their latest haircuts. Each World Cup presents a new set of hairstylessome actually look good, others should never be seen again. If you go to your local field, you will probably see plenty of kids sporting hairstyles similar to those of their role models (Struhs, 2010). Similarly, stars like Rihanna and Britney Spears do not only exploit their fashion tastes via magazines but they also share their trends via social media, allowing the broader globalised community to be influenced by a primary source. Supporting, forty-seven million Twitter followers between them, Britney and Rihanna essentially have the power decide whether teenage girls will dress conservatory or immorally.

In the recent decade, a small minority of celebrities have become increasingly involved in advocacy and activism, creating a positive image for themselves as well as setting a responsible example for their followers. Not only are celebrities development advocates but they are using their popularity to generate an increased understanding on issues such as homelessness. A number of celebrities are going beyond promoting important sociological issues but they are also creating their own organisations and charity foundations. Fundraiser concerts and other large charity-oriented events that involve celebrities are part of a new development advocacy, uniquely combining politics and popular culture. (Biccum, 2012) There are many examples of celebrity advocacy such as Angelina Jolies role as good will ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, George Clooneys advocacy work on behalf of Sudan, involving the use of satellite technology and Google to monitor the outbreak of civil war and Hugh Jackmans involvement with the Global Poverty Project (Biccum, 2012). In times when the world is most at need of charity, it is often the celebrities that come forward as leaders in raising funds. In 2009 music artists from all over the world united in Australia to perform two shows, raising money for victims of the Victorian bushfires and the Queensland floods. All of the artists, publishers and labels involved, provided a free clearance for DVDs of the event to be sold. Similarly, Sean Penns organisation responded to the Haiti earthquake, whilst Bono and Bob Geldoff have been involved in numerous campaigns against poverty. However, considering the size of the entertainment industry, the number of celebrities involved charity is rather limited.

There are also many negatives associated with celebrities holding immense influence over their followers, especially when the development of teenagers is concerned. In an experimental stage when they are constantly reinventing themselves, teenagers are prone to adapting to changes in celebrity trends. With celebrity role models such as Lindsay Lohan, a repeat drink driving offender and Miley Cyrus who was filmed smoking marijuana, teen development is at risk of heading in the wrong direction. Morality is blurred as teens do not let instances like this hinder their idols likeability. They have become immune to things that are wrong because they constantly see celebrities conducting themselves in this manner in the media (Gauna, 2011, pp.1). In order to protect teens from the colossus that is celebrities, it is up to their parents and the matured society to educate teens on how they should respond to celebrity behaviour.

The media plays an important role in facilitating the amount of influence that celebrity culture has on society. To a great extent it is media outlets that sensationalise the lifestyle of those in the limelight, making them appear much more intriguing than they actually are. Mainstream media content is most likely increasing in sensationalism due to competition with celebrity news sources, particularly those online (Wright 2008, pp.3). The publics interest in celebrity culture has grown so popular that there are now numerous publications exclusive to celebrity news, complete with rumours, photographs and scandalous information. They have grown extremely popular, mainstays in salons and grocery stores alike (Wright 2008, pp.9).

In order to put into perspective just how powerful celebrities have become, a glance at Lady Gagas Twitter page exemplifies the reality of the phenomenon that is cultural imperialism. Boasting over thirty million followers, it is hard to ignore the effect her obscure approach to life must have on others. It has been suggested that the publics interest in certain celebrity figures may be the result of a parasocial relationship with them (Wright 2008). For instance, blogger Chris Crocker shot to fame with his Youtube video entitled LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE! The video was uploaded during a time when Britney Spears was suffering from an array of heavily publicized personal issues. An emotional Crocker stands up for Spears in an emotional rant as if he knows her personally; She lost her aunt, she went through a divorce, she had two kids, her husband turned out to be a user, a cheater, and now shes going through a custody battle. All you people care about is.. readers and making money off of her. Anyone that has a problem with her you deal with me, because she is not well right now.

The effects of cultural imperialism and the influences of celebrities ultimately have positive or negative consequences. With correct education and a quality sense of morality and ethics, it would be less likely that celebrity culture would have a negative influence on ones life. However, overconsumption of entertainment media and an inability to come to terms with the reality of cultural imperialism, the likelihood of being negatively influenced by celebrities would be increased.

People often ask me why I use celebrity examples to illustrate my work. Well, look around you. The truth is that we are obsessed with celebrities. Head to the checkout line at a grocery store and youll see all the magazines, each trying to have the most salacious story on the cover to gain your attention so that youll spend your hard-earned dollar buying it. For many people, not a day goes by when they dont sneak a peek at their favorite celebrity gossip websi te. Sites like TMZ.com and PerezHilton.com are some of the hottest websites online, garnering millions of hits a day.

We often relate to celebrities more easily than to our own friends and neighbors. They have become the glue of our social fabric. We no longer stop in the village square or at the communal well to connect to each other. Instead, we use celebrities to feel connected. What would we talk about around the water cooler at work if not about the latest antics of Steve Carrell in The Office? How could we carry on a conversaton with our mother-in-law if not about our favorite celebrity on Dancing with the Stars?

What is it about celebrities that make them so irresistible? Is it that they lead such different lives? Is it that they have the ability to buy whatever they want? Or is it that they seem to have such a glamorous life? Everyone has their own reason for wanting to take a look into the life of their favorite A-List celebrity, and there is no stopping the media machine. In a sense, celebrities are our new gods. We like to fantasize that our lives could become like theirs we too could be beautiful, desirable, talented, rich. At the same time, we secretly want to see them fall so that we know that even our gods have feet have clay.

No wonder we avidly watch shows like TMZ or Entertainment Tonight and read everything we about them.

According to an advertising resource called the Consumer Magazine Advertising Source, entertainment publications, like the popular Entertainment Weekly and the nefarious National Enquirer, sell around five million copies on a weekly basis. This is a huge amount of money. As long as people buy, magazines will keep providing us with celebrity news. Paparazzi will keep chasing celebrities trying to catch them in embarrassing moments or making a general nuisance
11 | P a g e

of themselves to both celebrities and non-celebrities alike. Although the truth is that many celebrities (or their people) contact the paparazzi to make sure their face will be kept in front of the public. Some paparazzi even have contracts with certain stars.

Not only are magazines popular, but reality shows have been popping up all over television to bring us visually into the lives of our favorite celebrities. One of the first to put himself and his entire family on television was Ozzie Osbourne; there he was being a husband and a father, shuffling around picking up dog poop and taking out the garbage. It was almost as if the producers of the show wanted to show that celebrities are exactly like everyone else. Except they have big houses.

After the Ozzie Osbourne show became a hit, other B-list celebrities began jumping on the bandwagon hoping to make themselves more popular. A recent addition includes a show that follows the rising career of Ali Lohan. She is the sister of Lindsay Lohan, who has become as famous for partying hard in Hollywood and being in and out of rehab as for her body of work. The fact that the show actually has viewers proves that celebrities, even those who are only famous by association, have become a huge obsession in our culture.

The Fascination Obsession We tend to believe that our obsession with celebrities has only recently begun. The truth, however, is that fascination with those who are famous has been around for a very long time. Madame Tussaud became known in 1835 when she opened her first shop to exhibit the waxwork figures she had created of the celebrities of her time. The minute the doors opened, it was a huge success. Even now, a century and a half later, you will still see a long line outside of Madame Tussauds locations. But what do people who travel and pay to get into Madame Tussauds see? Unlike going to the zoo, where we can see live creatures we cannot find in our own area, at Madame Tussauds you see wax figures of your favorite celebrity. There is nothing educational about the experience and nothing that ties you into history other than their clothes. The only thing we get from visiting a place such as Madam Tussauds is the feeling that weve gotten closer to our favorite celebrities,
12 | P a g e

when, in reality, we have done nothing more than pay a fee to see a waxy imitation of the person we idolize.Consider the people who watched the gladiators in ancient Roman times. They not only got to see famous people, they also got to indulge in the human thirst for blood and violence. Gladiators who were successful were revered as the highest of celebrities. Those who became famous, but who were eventually killed, were almost more famous than the surviving gladiators, as fame has a way of making the dead seem more glamorous than they truly were. Elvis Presley is a great example of that. He was beloved by millions. You cant talk about music without mentioning Elvis Presley, who was considered by many to be the father of rock and roll. There are people who collect so much Elvis paraphernalia that they do not have room to house it all. Every year, over 600,000 people travel to Graceland, Elvis home, which is kept as a shrine to his memory. They get to see the much-talked about dcor as well as to pretend they were living in the house when Elvis himself was walking the hallways. Some even make yearly pilgrimages to his residence no matter how strapped they are for cash or how many times theyve seen the home before. Even now, decades after his death, people are still enamored. Why are we obsessed with celebrities?

Some believe we are obsessed with celebrities because we need to have an escape from the humdrum of everyday life. This makes sense in a bizarre sort of way. For instance, if you are not centered and balanced energetically, and you dont feel so good about who you are, you are much more likely to follow your favorite celebrity and wish that you could be them. Others theorize that we mentally stalk celebrities because we are waiting for them to fail. Much like the Roman spectators waited for the gladiator to lose his battle and die, we too are waiting for celebrities to flame out and reach some sort of a bottom that makes them seem a little more human and more like us.

Dr. Charlotte De Backer of the University of Leicester, Department of Media and Communication, carried out a study to try to explain why we are so obsessed with celebrities. She discovered that the younger the participant was, the more apt they were to follow celebrity gossip, even if the gossip was about a celebrity that they had never heard of. They also said that

13 | P a g e

celebrities who came from other cultures were more prestigious than the celebrities of their own culture. Dr. De Backer calls this the Parasocial Hypothesis. Dr. De Backer said, We did find in the interviews that older people do not gossip about celebrities as much because they want to learn from them or feel befriended with them, but they use celebrity gossip to bond with real life friends and acquaintances. Living in scattered societies, we often dont know who to talk about with the many people we know, and celebrities can act as our mutual friends and acquaintances.

There was a time when you could stand up and cheer for Babe Ruth. You could be proud that your son had all of his baseball cards and that he wanted nothing more than to be the Babe when he grew up. The average fan, however, didnt know what Babe did behind closed doors. His private life was private.

Now, however, thanks in part to the internet, it is much easier to find out about everything a celebrity has ever done. You cant avoid knowing that Winona Ryder has been arrested and convicted of shoplifting, or that Mel Gibson has a problem with alcohol. If a celebrity does something good, it takes a team of PR professionals to get it into the mainstream media. If a celebrity does something bad, or if something tragic happens, its all over the celebrity gossip sites in a matter of minutes.

Take, for instance, the story of Heath Ledger. Heath was an actor who had received critical acclaim for some of his work, most notably on the movie Brokeback Mountain, where he played a cowboy who was trying to deal with homosexuality. The media followed Heath as more of an afterthought. You may have seen a few photos of him here and there, and sometimes the paparazzi would try to get onto one of his movie sets, but they were very undemanding of his time compared with other celebrities.

Celebrities and Motherhood Motherhood is a sacred time: one that most women are thrilled to experience. Celebrities, however, are even influencing pregnancy and motherhood.

14 | P a g e

Imagine that your daughters favorite teen celebrity suddenly became pregnant. It can be very stressful to be a mother, but even more stressful to be a teenage mother. Statistics show that there are over 70 pregnancies for every 1,000 teen girls, and the numbers keep getting higher. In 2007, Jaime-Lynn Spears, sister to pop star Britney Spears and star of the Nickelodeon show Zoey 101, announced that she was pregnant at the age of 15. Immediately the Nickelodeon label had to decide if this celebritys situation was enough to pull her from the show, as the show was a hit in the young teen set. Representatives decided not to pull the actress, but the damage had already been done. The idea of celebrities having babies isnt the only factor involved. The way they exp erience pregnancy and raise their children can also influence us. For example, giving birth is a very natural process. Until 1970, only one in every 20 births were done via cesarean-section. Now, however, a quarter of all babies in the United States are being born in this way, with many csections scheduled in advance.

Why are so many women choosing to undergo surgery instead of going through childbirth naturally? Some critics believe that it is because women see their favorite celebrities giving birth that way. Elizabeth Hurley, Madonna, and Angelina Jolie are just a few celebrities who have undergone scheduled c-sections rather than wait to have their baby born naturally. Other women, however, say that they are choosing to schedule a c-section because they want to be able to schedule a time and date that is convenient for them. Simply put, I enjoyed the idea of being able to plan when my baby was going to be born. Also, my husband was due to go away on business before I was due, and I just could not imagine having to go through the whole childbirth thing without him, says Jennifer Barnard, a mother of a fifteen month old who spoke with Babyzone.com. Why are celebrities undergoing c-sections rather than having a natural birth? Some are doing it in order to be available for their filming schedules or promotional tours. And some are simply classified as too posh to push.

15 | P a g e

Not only are pregnant celebrities influencing women to have their babies in a different way, they are also coloring their ideas of how long it should take to regain your post-pregnancy shape. According to studies, 54% of women who were surveyed said that they were jealous of celebrity moms who were able to get back their pre-pregnancy shape almost immediately after surgery. Out of that same study, 47% also said that they admired celebrity women who were able to slim back down almost instantly, and 41% admitted to being skeptical about the entire pregnancy due to the mothers ability to be able to get thin so quickly.

Celebrity mom who slim down almost instantly, such as Jennifer Garner, Demi Moore, and Reese Witherspoon, put new mothers in a tailspin. Their hormones are already making them overly sensitive to a number of things, and when a new mother turns on the television and sees a celebrity new mom already thin again, it makes her self-esteem drop even lower, potentially worsening any tendency toward post-partum depression.

The Positive Celebrities Even though there are more stories about celebrities who have a negative influence on us and the decisions we make in our lives than there are positive actions, there are some celebrities who use their fame to bring about change and are good celebrity role models. Take Bono, singer of the popular band U2. Since 1999, Bono has been campaigning for third world debt relief and helping to raise awareness of the plight of those living in Africa. He has met with many influential politicians and has taken the United States Treasury Secretary, Paul ONeill, on a tour of parts of Africa to show him first hand what those living in poverty are facing. He and Bobby Shriver also started Product Red, a commercial initiative to help fight against AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis around the world.

Angelina Jolie is another celebrity who, although she had a very rocky and well-known past, has come to be one of the great spokeswomen about the living conditions children in various third world countries face, and was given the title of UNHCR Goodwill ambassador in 2001. We cannot close ourselves off to information and ignore the fact that millions of people are out there suffering. I honestly want to help. I dont believe I feel differently from other people. I
16 | P a g e

think we all want justice and equality, a chance for life with meaning. All of us would like to believe that if we were in a bad situation, someone would help us, Ms. Jolie said during the press conference to announce her ambassador status.

Politicians and the Truth Another form of celebrity happens with politicians. The problem for politicians who reach celebrity status, however, is that everything they say and do is closely scrutinized, whether its a comment during a presidential debate or a comment in the mens room. The media machine is all too eager to turn personal shortcomings into scandals. This didnt use to be the case. Presidents, in particular, once enjoyed a relationship with the press in which their personal life actually stayed personal. No one reported on John F. Kennedys reputed affairs, much unlike what happened with Bill Clinton and his fling with Monica Lewinsky. Nowadays, politicians cant get away with much, which could be seen as a boon to expose blantant untruths, but leaves the politician no wriggle room.

Because absolutely nothing is kept private, many people may have a more difficult time choosing a candidate to vote for.

Then there are the political wives who feel the need to stand by their erring husbands. When Hillary issued a public statement that she would stand by her husband, some women sympathized with her, others criticized her, but after the announcement her public approval ratings actually shot up around 70%, taking them to the highest they had ever been before. Wendy Vitter, wife of Senator Vitter, criticized Hillary for standing by her husband, stating, Im a lot more like Lorena Bobbit than Hillary. If [my husband] does something like that, Im walking away with one thing, and its not alimony, trust me. Yet seven years later she chose to stand by her husband, Senator David Vitter, when he came clean about being client of madam Deborah Palfrey. But why do political wives choose to stand by their husbands? Some experts say that it is because they have got too much to lose if they leave. Many political wives have given up their own careers and, for the entire time of their marriage, have done nothing but to help their husbands get further in their careers. Psychologist Sally Porter Ross believes that
17 | P a g e

political wives stay with their husbands in order to enjoy a shift in power. From that point on, shes in charge, shes got the power. She is absolutely on top, she said. Then again they are also stuck in the public eye, like so many celebrities, with their every move noted and critiqued.

I believe that women tend to believe unconsciously the lies they have inherited from generations of women that they are nothing without a man. They may not realize the deep untruths women carry about their value as a person. Stand by your man, no matter what is another cultural platitude they have unconsciously embodied.

The Mirror Effect Id really like to live the life of a celebrity, many say. Then again, you might not. Celebrities, now more than ever, truly have no privacy. The celebrity obsession has led them to be hunted by paparazzi and stalked by crazed fans. Brad Pitt had to get a restraining order against a woman who broke into his home and tried on his clothes. And celebrity/reality star Adrienne Curry filed a restraining order against a woman named Shira Gellis, who started by stalking her on popular social networking site MySpace and then ferreted out her physical address and followed her around the city.

We are a fame-obsessed culture, but then, we have always been so; technology has simply made it easier. If you spend more time finding out which of your favorite stars went to dinner last night and who they went to dinner with, you may want to reexamine your own life. Is there anything missing from your life that you could better use that time to fill? Friends? Exercise? Truth heals, and the truth is that celebrities, as much fun as our fantasies of them may be, can actually serve a purpose in our lives. Which celebrities are you most enthralled by? Do you understand why? When you look in the mirror and delight in your Rachel haircut, or despair that you will never have Halle Berrys body, what is the comparison saying to you? Does Bonos activism inspire you, or are you more likely to want to imitate the I dont give a damn attitude of many in the pages of the media? Do you feel compassion for Britney Spears as she battles her inner demons, or do you think she deserves no visitation with her kids?

It was later remade in Tamil and Telugu, The film was produced by his brother Arbaaz Khan, and released on 10 September 2010. It made a record opening at the box office and Box Office India declared it an all-time blockbuster. Dabangg at that time was the second and now the fourh highest-grossing Bollywood film and for his performance, Khan received a Star Screen Award for Best Actor and a Stardust Award for Star of the Year Male and was nominated for his sixth Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Anupama Chopra from NDTV wrote about his performance, "It's the role of a lifetime and Salman Khan bites into it like a starving man devours a feast. He inhabits it fully, strutting and swaggering and even, spoofing himself." Khan's first release of 2011 was Ready.Upon release, Ready became the second highest opening day grosser, as well as the second highest weekend grossing Bollywood film at that time, after Dabangg, another Salman Khan-starrer. It also held records for being the second highest grossing Bollywood film of 2011. He next appeared in Bodyguard,a remake of the 2010 Malayalam film of the same name. The film was not well received by critics, though became a financial success, with a domestic total of 1,409.5 million (US$26 million)India's highest-earning film of the year.

2012 was a prolific year for Khan. His first release of 2012 was Ek Tha Tiger where Khan starred opposite Katrina Kaif and act as Indian Spy.The film garnered positive to mixed reactions from critics whilst opening to extremely strong box office collections. The film went on to break the opening day boxofice record with a collection of INR31.23 crore (US$5.4 million) and became the second Bollywood film to gross over INR300 crore (US$52 million) worldwide behind only 3 Idiots with an eventual gross of INR310 crore (US$53 million). It marks his first association with Yash Raj Films. The film also broke the record of Opening weekend net gross (First 3 Days

of Release), Opening week net gross (First 7 Days of Release) and entered 100 crore club in just 5 days of release breaking Salman Khan's own record set by Bodyguard in 7 Days. Salman Khan's 2nd release of 2012 is Dabangg 2 which is a sequel of his blockbuster Dabangg under production of Arbaaz Khan.Upon release, the film netted an excellent INR19.21 crore (US$3.3 million) on its opening day and became the biggest opener for a non-holiday Friday in India, beating the previous record held by Don 2.[59] and collected INR58.26 crore (US$10 million), beating the previous three-day record set by Ek Tha Tiger.[60][61] Dabangg 2 eventually emerged as a huge financial success with revenues of INR250 crore (US$43 million) globally.

Brand endorsements Salman Khan was associated as a brand when he done the advertisement of Hero Honda bikes and Double Bull shirts, much before he entered film Industry. Later Akshay Kumar replaced Khan. Later he was the brand ambassador of soft drink Mountain Dew with whom he ended the contract in December 2010. and now he is once again promoting Thums Up. In its early days, Salman Khan set up and funded the Foundation using his own money. The Foundation has two focus areas: Education and Healthcare. To increase the reach and corpus of the Foundation, Salman Khan has undertaken initiatives such as Being Human Art; Being Human merchandise; and Being Human Gitanjali Gold Coins. In 2011, he launched his own production company called SKBH Productions (Salman Khan Being Human Productions). Money which will be generated from film productions will be donated to Being Human. First film made under the banner was kids entertainer Chillar Party, which went on to win 3 National Awards, for Best Children's film, best original screenplay and

Personal life He lives in Galaxy Apartments, Bandra, Mumbai. He also has a 150 acre plot in Panvel, which has 3 bungalows, swimming pool and gym. Khan is a dedicated bodybuilder. He has a 42-inch chest, 17-inch biceps and a 30-inch waist. Khan has never married. In 1999, he began dating Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai; their relationship was often reported in the media until the couple separated in 2001. Khan started dating actress Katrina Kaif but after years of speculations, Kaif admitted in an interview in 2011 that she was in a serious relationship with Salman Khan for several years, which ended in 2010. In August 2011 he admitted he suffers from trigeminal neuralgia, a facial nerve disorder commonly known as the suicide disease. In an interview he said that he has been quietly suffering it for the past seven years, but now the pains become unbearable. It has even affected his voice, making it much harsher.

Controversies Khan has been the subject of several controversies, including certain legal troubles.

Hit-and-run case On 28 September 2002, Khan was arrested for rash and negligent driving. His car had run into a bakery in Mumbai; one person who was sleeping on the pavement outside the bakery died and three others were injured in the mishap. Charges of culpable homicide were laid against him, but later dropped.
23 | P a g e

Relationship with Aishwarya Rai His relationship with actress Aishwarya Rai was a well publicised topic in the Indian media. After their break-up in March 2002, Rai accused him of harassing her. She claimed that Khan had not been able to come to terms with their break-up and was hounding her; her parents lodged a complaint against him. In 2005, news outlets released what was said to be an illicit copy of a mobile phone call recorded in 2001 by the Mumbai police. It appeared to be a call in which he threatened Rai, in an effort to force her to appear at social events held by Mumbai crime figures. The call featured boasts of connections to organised crime and derogatory comments about other actors. However, the alleged tape was tested in the government's Forensic lab in Chandigarh, which concluded that it was fake.

Black hunting case On 17 February 2006, Khan was sentenced to one year in prison for hunting the Chinkara, an endangered species. The sentence was stayed by a higher court during appeal. On 10 April 2006, he was handed a five-year jail term and remanded to Jodhpur jail until 13 April when he was granted bail. On 24 July 2012, Rajasthan High Court finalised charges against Salman Khan and his other colleagues in the endangered black buck killing case, paving way for start of the trial.

Remarks about 26/11 attacks On September 2010, Khan was reported to have claimed during an interview to a Pakistani channel that the 26/11 attacks got a lot of attention because the "elite" were targeted. During the interview the actor had said "It was the elite that was targeted this time. Five star hotels and stuff. So they panicked. Then they got up and spoke about it. My question is why not before. Attacks have happened in trains and small towns too, but no one talked about it so much." Khan also said that Pakistan was not to be blamed for it, and that the Indian security forces had failed. Khan's comments had drawn strong reactions from Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Chagan Bhujbal, Shiv Sena, BJP and other political parties. The comments were also condemned by Ujwal Nikam, Special Prosecutor in the 26/11 trial. Khan later apologised for his comments.

Chapter 6: Conclusion
He has helped many stars to achieve what they are today. Himesh Reshammiya, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Sajid-Wajid were brought into the industry thanks to Salman Khans help. Even Hrithik Roshan went through training through our Sallu.

Govinda was practically forgotten in our industry, and was written off by the critics and media. However, our Sallu came and saved the day by giving him a hero lead in Partner. Although he had a role in Bhagam Bhag, Govinda was wasted in the film, and with Salaam-E-Ishq, he got appreciated for his role, but this time it flopped at the Box-Office. However, with the big success of Partner, Govinda got both a huge HIT and also the critics/audience appreciation. Now, Govinda is back in the running. It has also been written that Salman Khan gave Govinda a Mercedez-Benz car when Govinda refused fees from him.

He is the probably one of the only star to start his own foundation for the kids and the poor. And look what he did - he knows that kids with some sickness or illness wont go to watch a movie. Prior to the release of Partner, he had a special screening for the kids! Plus, every kid walked out with a special gift in their hands after the event! Wow, our Salman is truly great!

This man will always have a golden heart, despite the bad times he has been through. He gives bicycles to the kids, always gives money to the needy and even blankets to people who sleeps on the street at night. He always helps a certain foundation or an association, and the best part about it is that he does it privately and doesnt involve the media into it. He is probably one of the few Bollywood actors today who does help a lot.

This is another topic that makes Salman Khan a winner. Many celebrities have turn to him for help, e.g. when Sushmita Sen adopted daughter fell ill, no one was there to help her, and then she called Salman Khan. And within a couple of minutes, he showed up at her doorstep. When Dia Mirza mom fell ill, it was our Sallu who made the rescue. Saawan Kumar Tak came to Salman Khan who thought he needed money. However, Saawan Kumar asked him to play a part in Saawan, which Salman Khan did for FREE. When no one was willing to play supporting role
32 | P a g e

to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, it was Salman Khan who ended up doing it for Karan Johar. These are many examples why this man rocks!

I consider Salman Khan the most powerful star at the Box-Office because of this topic. Despite all the bad stuff he has done, he still remains a top star at the Box-Office - if thats not power, then what is it then? Take for example, Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya release at the Box -Office. Two days before its release, the tape controversy happened in India. And Salman Khan was accused, as they assumed it was his voice on the tape. Shows were cancelled, however, Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya was recording 90%+ opening at the Box-Office. On top of that, Salman Khan was the only bankable star in the film. The movie according to the trade, was a Semi-Hit. Had that controversy didnt happen, it wouldve done Hit business. That clearly shows you that our Sallu is probably the most powerful star at the Box-Office. Even today, despite flops, he can still surprise everyone with a Partner.

Now, you tell me, only few actors are blessed with this. Look at what Salman Khan has been through in life and all the bad stuff he has done yet his fans are there for him through thick and thin. When he was in jail, people prayed for him, fasted for him, gave food to him in jail, they also tried to visit him in jail! This man is a rockstar in India. And the day he was released, there was a huge celebration at his house; likely over 1000 people were there. After all he has been through, fans are supposed to hate Salman Khan, yet they love him more and his fan base did increase. Well, Salman and Shah Rukh may both have the biggest fan base following in India, but Salman Khan has the most loyal fans in India. Thats why, as fans, we voted Salman Khan to be in the Madame Tussauds and deservingly, he won the poll beating the likes of Kajol, Madhuri Dixit, and Hrithik Roshan.

Salman Khan, along with Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar are the only stars to guarantee huge opening at the Box-Office. Despite flops he has encountered, his films still takes great opening from all parts of India! Where SRK and Aamir Khan rules A centres, Salman Khan is one of the few stars to guarantee a huge opening not only in the A centres, but in the B and C centres also. He is the hero of the masses!

33 | P a g e

Despite being the huge stars in the likes of Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, and Shah Rukh Khan, our Salman Khan still have more All-Time Blockbusters than any other stars in Bollywood history e.g. Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The closest star to beat him is Shah Rukh Khan with two All-Time Blockbusters. Also, Salman Khan is one of the few stars to have other records at the Box-Office.

He is one of the few stars to have: Four or more releases in one year (1998), and were all HITS Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, Bandhan, Jab Pyar Kisse Se Hota Hain Top Grossers In One Year (1999) Biwi No.1, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Hum Saath-Saath Hain Most Hits than any other actor in the 90s

In 1994, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun smashed Sholay records Gross to become the biggest grosser film at that time and did excellent business in the overseas for a Bollywood film. It was the first film to do over Rs. 10 crores in the overseas market.

Maine Pyar Kiya broke records not only in India, but also in overseas market.

Salman Khan is currently at Number 3 (tied with SRK) in the list for having the top grosser of the year. He has so far five in the list (Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', Biwi No.1, and No Entry). Amitabh Bachchan currently has seven films as the top grossers of the year, while Dilip Kumar has ten films.

This is one aspect that sets Salman Khan different from other stars in Bollywood - his attitude! Although you expect Salman Khan to grow up a bit, but the man doesnt care! If the people who are interviewing him give him a dumb question, he will ask them back the same question. People who has done something to hurt our Sallu, he would ignore them. Despite critics are bashing him to do something different in his movie, he still doesnt care. Sometimes his one-liners from interviews are too funny, but you would expect that from Salman Khan.
34 | P a g e

Thats right, our Sallu had made it in Peoples Magazine for being one of the most handsome man ever in the world. Only three actors in Bollywood have achieved that; Dharmendra, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan. And to be honest, those are the three most handsome men ever in Bollywood history. Another news that made Bollywood and India proud.

Salman Khan is one actor we know who can sleepwalk through his role. But what stands out when watching a Salman Khan film is his screen presence. Once he enters the screen, you cant help but notice Salman Khan all the time. He is one of the few actors in India and overseas when they appear the first time on screen, the crowds go wild and cheer for him. Out of all the stars making special appearances in Om Shanti Om, Salman Khan got the most cheers. It must be noted that when Salman puts his mind to a role, he will do a great job e.g. 'Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Andaz Apna Apna, Karan Arjun, Tere Naam and Kyon Ki. Salman Khan is one actor who doesnt care about an award. In fact, we know in the future Salman Khan will never win a Best Actor Award. He can play the hardest role to perfection in cinema history, but yet, he will never win the award. Well, Salman Khan is one actor to prove you dont need an award to prove yourself. Salman Khan has said one thing, He cares more about rewards, than awards. Well said, Sallu! Anything looks good on Salman Khan, thats why it reflects on the youth generation. Imagine, a hair style in Tere Naam becoming a huge rage in India. Well, thats how our Sallu influence the youth generation. His look even in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi was a hit amongst the youngsters. In fact, most youths and elders want to have a body like Salman Khan. Salman Khan has definitely made an impact to the people of India. He is one actor who actually redefines cool. Most recent stars are influenced by Salman Khan physique. Look at SRK so called 6 -pack abs, its not shocking that Salman Khan inspired him to get that. In fact, SRK asked Salman for tips. Plus, Ranbir Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan were under his training to get a great body. He also influenced Govinda and Anil Kapoor to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

35 | P a g e

To be honest, if one were to conduct an article on the ten most memorable actors to ever grace Bollywood, Salman Khan would have to make it to the list (others being Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajendra Kumar, Jeetendra, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan). Nothing and I mean nothing affects this guy status or his fans. Salman Khan is a legend in the making, whether you like him or not.

One knows that the best dancers today in Bollywood are Govinda and Hrithik Roshan for actors. But what sets Salman Khan different (even Shah Rukh Khan) is that whatever moves he does, it looks good. Points in case include No Entry title track, Just Chill (Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya), O Jaana (Tere Naam), Oo Oh Jaane Jaana (PKTDK), Youre My Love (Partner), Tenu Leke (Salaam-E-Ishq), and many more to back up this statement. Ask the distributors - they dont affect Salman Khan. In fact, it strengths him, and thats what scores with Salman Khan. Despite giving six straight flops, he is still in the Top 5 according to the trade and thats remarkable. Yes, it made him drop, but the huge success of 'Partner' has put him back in the running. Plus, it has been written that he got a Rs.24 crore film deal. Imagine, if Salman Khan was that bad, would he get that kind of huge offer? History has it that whenever Salman Khan dies in a film, its a flop at the Box -Office. Veergati, Hello Brother, Phir Milenge, Kyon Ki, Baabul are examples to prove this theory. Even Tere Naam which took a huge opening at the BO settled for Above Average Semi-Hit status because of the huge drop in the second week. That is due to the second half of the film where Salman Khan was treated badly in the film. It seems Salman Khan fans dont want to see their hero in that state. Whats funny is that SRK, Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar can die in their movies, yet they can be HITS. However, if Salman Khan dies in his films, they dont succeed. I guess we want to see Salman Khan have a happy ending. Despite SRK being the ruler of the overseas market, its in fact Salman Khan films which opened Bollywood films to the overseas market. Yes, Amitabh Bachchan films in the 70s and 80s films succeeded in the West Indies, North American and UK territory, but it was Maine Pyar Kiya that made the huge impact. It broke records everywhere especially in the West Indies. It was
36 | P a g e

dubbed in English As When Love Calls and in Spanish as Te Amo. Maine Pyar Kiya was Rs.1 crore short of beating Sholay record Gross. Then came Hum Aapke Hain Koun that smashed records everywhere. HAHK was the first film to gross over Rs.50 crores, and settled for a Rs.65 crores run at the BO. Plus, it was the first film to gross over a $1,000,000 in the US market, and over 1,000,000 Pounds in the UK market. Since then, Bollywood has made a huge impact in the overseas market. If trade reports are to be believed, it was Salman Khan who started the bumper opening trend. Thats why back in the 90s, most of his films were HITS at the BO because they had took huge opening at the BO (he did it on a consistent basis). Even his flop films were nearly recoverable thanks to the good opening it received.

If one were to look at Salman Khan filmography, about 70% of his films has good soundtracks. It seems that great music is a must for a Salman Khan starrer - even up to today. He is one actor who can make a soundtrack sell because of his loyal fans, and even people dont like him, they are aware that a Salman Khan starrer has good songs. The soundtrack of Tere Naam, despite being released four years ago, still sells to this day.

One always knows when Salman Khan is on the mike, it will be memorable. As mentioned above, if the people who are interviewing him give him a dumb question, he will ask them back the same question. His one-liners are amazing and he is most of the time very funny or even serious, one cant tell. Look at the Saawariya music launch, if it wasnt for Salman Khan, the music launch wouldve been a huge flop. Sometimes, even the interviewer gets scared when interviewing Salman Khan because he will give them his killer look. So word of advice to people who wants to interview Salman in the future - make sure you ask Salman the right questions!

One characteristic that sets Salman Khan different from the other stars is that he speaks from the heart. Look at the 1999 Filmfare Awards, when he got the Best Supporting Actor, he clearly said on stage, I dont deserve this award. And that takes a lot of guts to say it. Other stars, who clearly gets awards who doesnt deserve it (cough cough, SRK), will brag how he/she is happy and this and that. He is one of the few people who clearly said that he hated Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. He was honest as to why he didnt take Chak De India and Baazigar. Despite

37 | P a g e

being close friends to Aamir Khan, he states why Aamir doesnt want to work with him in the future.

Despite being a Disaster at the BO, still Salman Khan is the first commercial Bollywood star to work with Hollywood director (William Carroll), and actress (Ali Larter). A huge achievement for our Sallu.

Whether he is in suits, wearing some goofy T-Shirt or some ripped up jeans, one must say, it looks good on Salman Khan. In fact, anything looks good on this man. When he is on screen or at any function, one cant help but admire Salman Khan. Salman Khan has a lot of classic films in Bollywood Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Andaz Apna Apna, Khamoshi, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Tere Naam (despite being a remake), and No Entry (it's not one of those comedies these days where it tries to be funny- it's actually funny and will be remembered as a comedy classic) are classics and some will be classics in the future.

Salman Khan, no matter what the critics, media, and people say, you are still Number One to us no matter what. We have been with you since the Maine Pyar Kiya' days, and we stood by you when all the controversies happened. You may not be the best actor ever, but we still enjoy watching your films. You have been a role-model to us back in the days, and up to this day. Nobody in Bollywood has done much as what you do to the needy people. You may be termed as the Bad Boy of Bollywood, but you have proved numerous times that you are still a man with the golden heart. We hope as fans, that you continue to rule Bollywood and we all hope and pray that all of your upcoming films do extremely well at the BO.
