 ABSTRACT

The problem of this study was “Is there any significant correlation between the
vocabulary mastery and translation ability of the eleventh-grade students of
SMA Negeri 11 Palembang?”. Therefore, the objective of this study was to find out
whether or not there was a significant correlation between the vocabulary mastery and
translation ability of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 11 Palembang.
Correlational method was used to conduct this research. The population of this study was
all the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 11 Palembang in the academic year
2006/2007 with a total number of 282 students. The writer took two classes out of seven
classes to be the sample by using convenience sampling method. The sample was 81
students. The data were collected by means of a vocabulary test and a translation test.
Then the data were analyzed by using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation
Coefficient formula. The correlation coefficient obtained was 0.620. The value of
r-obtained was higher than the critical value of r-table, so H0 was rejected and H1 was
accepted. It means that there was a significant correlation between the vocabulary
mastery and translation ability of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 11
Palembang.
