1. Dr. M. Rajasekaran,
Associate Professor and HoD i/c, NIS
The highlight of the recent developments in NIS is the undertaking of a WHO-sponsored project i.e.Development of Standard Siddha Terminologies. The similar projects have also been allotted to other individual AYUSH systems --- Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy. This project entails access to all the Siddha literatures and contribution from faculty members of NIS and also from various other Siddha institutions, retired Professors and administrative heads of Siddha departments, private Siddha practitioners, Siddha doctors working in manufacturing units and other public organizations. This project after completion will bring to light the individuality of this system. Being a project sponsored by the World Health Organisation, it will definitely attract the attention of the people world-wide, especially those working in the academic side, research and industry. Approval from Institutional Ethics Committee and Institutional Animal Ethics Committee is mandatory for the clinical trials or preclinical studies undertaken as a part of the dissertation work by the Postgraduate Siddha students. Pre-clinical evaluation, especially toxicity study, is mandatory for clinical trials with drugs which are not listed in the Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1940 and Rules 1945. Strengthening the infra-structure--animal house, pharmacology and other laboratories ---of Siddha Institutions will not only facilitate cost-efficient preclinical and clinical studies in the institute itself but also ensure adequate in-house training to faculty members, Ph.D scholars and postgraduate students who will be encouraged to undertake more number of research projects in addition to the dissertation works.
