Drawing, Painting, Sculpture Adult Classes


Plein Air Painting 2013/6-PA1 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 16 Oct. 21, M 9:00 am 12:00 pm This class will develop fundamentals of landscape painting for the beginner or intermediate student who wants to work outdoors. With a focus on basic color theory, color mixing, perspective, composition, editing, brush handling and value patterns, your work will become faster, more dynamic and improve your overall confidence. We will cover both common rural and landscape subjects. Instructor: Kirah Van Sickle Wire Sculpture 2013/6-S1 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 16 Oct. 21, M 12:30 3:30 pm Beginners and intermediate students are welcome. Hands-on lessons are offered in joining techniques with a wide array of subjects. Some drawing talent is helpful but not necessary. Students must bring their own pliers. Needle nose, lineman and wire cutters are needed. Instructor: Michael Van Hout Landscape Painting in Oil 2013/6-P1 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 17 Oct. 22, T 9:00 am 12:00 pm Course description: Values, color and composition are the dynamic elements that make our paintings stand out. This course will emphasize these elements in the design and development of landscape paintings. In this course, we will also develop a better understanding of the various elements of landscape in order to better represent them on canvas and to provide greater confidence in experimentation. Instructor: Joanne Geisel Intermediate Drawing 2013/6-D1 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 17 Oct. 22, T 12:30 3:30 pm This class is a continuation of the Drawing Fundamentals class with a focus on drawing environments and perspective drawing. Now that you can measure accurately and use charcoal, it is time to explore drawing environments. Work from life and photographs to create believable drawings of rooms and buildings, landscapes and cityscapes. Instructor: Todd Carignan Life Drawing Group - Evening (2013/6-LDG1) Tuesdays, 6:00 9:00 pm Ongoing Life Drawing/Painting Group - Morning (2013/6-LDG2) Wednesdays, 9:00 am- 12:00 pm Ongoing These life drawing groups meet on a continuing basis in Studio I. Painting with oils and acrylics and modeling with clay and wax are allowed in addition to dry media and watercolor. The cost is seven sessions for $75 paid using a punch card system. Painting for Beginners in Oil or Acrylic 2013-6-P2 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 18 Oct. 23, W 6:00 9:00 pm No fear - all fun! This class is a primer on materials and techniques for the beginner painter. Students will learn about the various mediums, materials and tools, historical perspective, as well as basic fundamentals of color, shape, value and style. Acrylic is versatile and forgiving and will be the medium

used for demonstrations. Through lecture, demonstrations and exercises the student will have a framework upon which to grow. Instructor: Kirah Van Sickle Fundamentals of Drawing 2013/6-D2 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 19 Oct. 24, Th. 9:00 am 12:00 pm An introduction to drawing with a focus on how to measure accurately, create depth, use light and shadow and find interesting compositions. Students learn how to use charcoal to interpret from still lifes and photographs. Instructor: Todd Carignan Color and Composition 2013/6-P3 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 19 Oct. 24, Th. 12:30 3:30 pm This is a studio class for both beginner and advanced painters focusing on fundamentals of color and composition. Working with in-studio setups or a photo of choice, this class addresses fundamentals of color theory and composition which will enable a more dynamic and richer level of artwork. The instructor works with each student to achieve their personal goals. All mediums welcome - watercolor, pastel, oil and acrylic. Instructor: Kirah Van Sickle Drawing in the Way of the Masters 2013/6-D3 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 19 Oct. 24, Th. 6:00 9:00 pm Participants will begin each class session by viewing the drawings of one of the masters of the art form. They will identify the unique qualities of each artists work in terms of both composition and mark-making and will then explore ways of creating their own original works using some of techniques of the featured artist. Photography Adult Classes


Beginning DSLR Camera & Basic Digital Photography 2013/6-PH1 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 18 Oct. 23, W 10:00 am 12:00 pm Students learn the parts and functions of the DSLR camera and the controls on the camera that alter shutter speed, aperture, and light sensitivity. Students are introduced to basic image manipulation through demonstration, using computers and software. Instructor: Alan Cradick

Writing Adult Classes


Memory and Metaphor 2013/6-W1 (Limit 8 students) Sept. 15 Oct. 20, Sunday 2:00 4:00 pm (2 hour class) This workshop uses exercises designed to help you tap into your memories to create metaphor and imagery. It is useful in creating poetry, memoir, fiction, and even hybrid forms of writing or personalized blogs. No experience required, though appropriate for experienced writers. This multi-genre workshop employs an MFA program style workshop and does require the exchange of work with other participants. Instructor: Margo Williams Writing Nature, Place & Environment in Prose and Poetry 2013/6-W2 (Limit 8 students) Sept. 20 Oct. 25, F 9:30 11:30 am (2 hour class) Animals (wild and domestic), land- and seascapes, science, environment, adventurenature writing is all these and more. Whether you are an expert naturalist or simply love nature, writing is one way to explore the world, to contemplate our place in it, and to inform and entertain others. We will use a variety of techniques to get creative juices flowing, and will look at some examples of fine nature writing. 2

Participants will have the opportunity to share their writing and get feedback (although this is not strictly a workshop). Writers of all levels and genres (nonfiction, fiction, memoir, drama) are welcome. We will spend some class time outdoors, weather permitting. Instructor: Sheila Boneham Write Your Memoir Workshop 2013/6-W3 (Limit 8 students) Sept. 20 Oct. 25, F 1:00 4:00 pm (3 hour class) Have you begun writing your memoir? Are you ready now for reader responses? This six-week workshop offers a safe environment in which to present your work, receive feedback from your peers and the instructor, and read and respond to your peers work. Please note: this is a workshop, not a class; we have some brief discussions of craft and other writerly topics, but the focus will be on members work. To receive feedback, members will need to provide copies of their work, ideally printed/typed, for all other members of the group; all copies will be returned to the author. After-School Classes for Children and Youth


After-school Art Class Ages 9-12 - 2013/6-AS1 (Limit 15 students) Sept. 16 Oct. 21, M 4:00 5:30 pm Children explore the museum through guided tours, scavenger hunts and special activities, and then express their creativity through hands-on art projects in a variety of media (including drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture). On the final day of class, there is a Student Art Reception. Instructors: Georgia Mastroieni & Sarah Richter After-school Art Class Ages 5 8 - 2013/3-AS2 (Limit 15 students) Sept. 18 0 Oct. 23, W 4:00 5:30 Children explore the museum through guided tours, scavenger hunts and special activities, and then express their creativity through hands-on art projects in a variety of media (including drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture). water-based acrylic paint. The versatility of the medium will give students confidence in brush handling, color mixing, developing form, light and shadow and develop a personal, creative style. Working from imagination, studio still lifes and photo references, students will develop fundamental skills on which to build.
Instructor: Kirah Van Sickle Hand building With Clay Ages 9 12 2013/6-AS4 Limit 8 students Sept. 20 Oct. 25, F 4:00 5:30 pm

Students will be working on basic hand building techniques. Pinch, coils and slab, will be used to create primitive musical instruments, relief tiles, miniature sculptures and games. Instructor: Renato Abbatte

Healthy Living New! 6 Week Classes


Introduction to Yoga 2013/6-HL1 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 20 Oct. 25, F 10:00 am 11:30 pm Through historical exploration and posture demonstration, Introduction to Yoga will clarify any mystique of this ancient body form. If you feel stuck in your body or in your life, give yoga a try. A gentle, restorative practice can strengthen your movements, no matter your physical level. Instructor: Pam Greenough 3

Introduction to Tai Chi 2013/6-HL2 (Limit 12 students) Sept. 20 Oct. 25, F 12:00 1:30 pm Learn Tai Chi forms taught at a slow, gentle pace through demonstration and discussion. A Tai Chi practice improves balance and mental relaxation while increasing concentration and right brain / left brain capabilities. This 6 week class will lay the foundation for a beginning Tai Chi Student to continue a personal practice. Instructor: Martha Gregory
