Our Story
The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service is peace. ~Mother Theresa
My name is Jo Rampy, CEO, or Chief Encouragement Officer, for the Rampy Multiple Sclerosis Research Foundation.
We advocate fundraising to direct dollars to two scientists, Dr. Drew and Dr. Wight, who are researching an MS cure at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Department in Little Rock, Arkansas.

On a beautiful early August morning later that summer, my friends and I set out to run the 10K which we had trained to run together. Our friends from our disciple study group came to cheer us along the streets of the KC Plaza. I was only able to complete that 10K because of the ongoing encouragement and unity of friends. Alice, 70 years young and longtime runner of our community group jumped off the start line and ran beside me. In that moment, I recognized the possibilities of friendship without personal gain, and I was grateful to share the love of running with Alice. That December, our uplifting and talented praise team surprised our family by making a personalized home visit to see us! They shared holiday-themed, warm-hearted songs and traditional holiday cheer simply to make us happy. I have been utterly changed by the continued love shared by our family, friends like family, and church family, as well as all of the blessings that we have experienced through our faith in Christs mercy, grace and love. Alex graduated high school, went to college and immediately became a free agent fundraising advocate for MS. She worked with the campus organization known as RAMS, which meant Rocking Against Multiple Sclerosis. Everyone in the family has worked as a free agent, inspired by Alex to actively engage in fund raising to find a cure for MS. The fund raising took a leap two years ago while my husband and I were training for a triathlon. The triathlon was intended to be a private event between Scott, my husband, and I, but it ended up being a surprise community event that not only encouraged me in my quest for the finish line, but was what propelled our foundations creation. The attendees that day, nearly 250 people, presented a check to me at the finish line to start our foundation. Our mission statement was clear: Encouraging a world with MS, because I was encouraged that day to seek and reach beyond what MS attempts to keep from me. Twelve years ago, MS moved into our house and occupied a small room tucked out of the way of our lives. Our lives continued on virtually unaffected for quite awhile, but over the last two years MS has begun to occupy our entire house. MS is messy, doesnt clean up after itself, meets us at every turn and alters our daily lives on a daily basis... and it doesnt even pay rent! Philippians 2:1-2: If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.

I am honored, humbled and altogether quite happy to share my experiences of life with multiple sclerosis. MS does not define me, nor does it limit my possibilities or celebrations in life. Instead, I define my life by the encouraging and invigorating rewards found in personal health, wellness, and friendships. In the summer of 2000, while training for a 10K with three friends, I experienced numbness on my left side. At the time, it merely contributed to slowing my run time, but in truth this episode turned out to be a warning flag for me to be proactive in seeking information on what was causing the numbness. After hearing me detail my numbness and fatigue, our family practitioner mentioned lupus and requested I have an MRI to provide concrete information of my symptoms. After the MRI, I immediately was packed and off on a spiritual mission trip with Alex, my daughter, and crew of compassionate teens from our church. That July saw severe high temperatures for the St. Louis area, which we were right in the midst of while we painted two-story walls of homes in the downtown area. The homes themselves were without air conditioning, instead operating with a single floor fan to circulate the hot air around us. On our way home after our seven days of gratifying service, the Amtrak train we were riding broke down and lost the use of its air conditioning as well. We were delayed three hours, but arrived home safely. Upon returning home, I was unable to walk for seven days. Our kindhearted doctor, Lori, had tears streaming down her face as she told us that the MRI showed a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. I am a classroom teacher, and so, wearing my teacher hat, my thoughts immediately were, Multiple means many and sclerosis means scars! Later, I would add that it meant lesions on the neurological system. The news was abstract, not concrete, for me that day. We chose to have a spinal tap done to confirm the MS diagnosis, and the spinal tap results were consistent with the MRIs diagnosis of MS.

Morgan Chaffin
Morgan grew up in northeast Nebraska and didnt have the passion for endurance sports until her high school years. In high school she played golf and tennis, but took up running as a way of getting into shape. Her father passed due to health complications and this was a major turning point for Morgan. She was considered overweight and obese and her nickname was Chimney Chaffin because of her smoking habit. She kicked her bad habits and found exercise was a great way to cope with the loss of her father. In 2005, she took up cycling and raced for Team Kaos/Nebraska Medical Center and was the state time trial champion for a few consecutive years before beginning triathlons in 2008. After finishing her Masters in Exercise Science at the University of Nebraska Omaha she decided to focus on triathlon. This season is her first full year as a professional after receiving her pro card when she was the first overall amateur at Ironman Racine 70.3 in 2010. She currently races on the elite Snapple Triathlon Team. She coaches triathletes, leads a masters swim program at Lifetime Fitness, and works at Red Dirt Running Company in Omaha. This year Morgan is focusing on the full Ironman in Mont Tremblant, Canada which takes place on August 18. She had a half ironman PR at Ironman Texas 70.3 in April and was the 9th pro at Ironman Kansas 70.3. Last year she finished 8th at the Illinois Half Marathon, 7th at Memphis in May, and 6th at Ironman Kansas 70.3. Morgan is excited to be attending the second annual Trifest for MS Triathlon! The Rampy MS Foundation stands for a great cause! It is not only working on finding a cure but educating and encouraging others to lead a healthier lifestyle. She had a wonderful experience last year and is looking forward to making more great memories!

Mark Saroni
Born in the arid desert of Saudi Arabia, Marks early childhood included lots of sand, dust, and very little moisture. Son of an Air Force father, he first set knee in the USA at 18 months and settled in the much more populated but nearly as sweltering city of Dallas. When Mark was but a wee lad of 12 he was bit by the proverbial, tri bug, a dangerous and lethal insect whose bite often proves fatal and most definitely did in his case. Mark moved to San Antonio in the spring of 2011. He knew the city well for he had previously spent many summers there in order to be punished mercilessly by his coach in the hot Texas sun. Apparently his move wasnt just a vain search for masochistic torture sessions for he did indeed make improvement and raced well enough to earn his pro card as a triathlete that same spring of 2011. Graduating college, getting married and turning pro all within the span of 4 weeks was how he chose to kick-start 2012. Together with his wife, they set sail on the tempestuous journey of life. Mark is currently happily adrift with only the grace of his Savior, Jesus Christ, to steer him where he wills. Mark has a Masters of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Tyler. In addition to being a professional triathlete, Mark is also a USA Track and Field and USA Triathlon Level I Coach. He works in San Antonio as a swim coach, personal trainer, triathlon and running coach.
