State fairs are famous for their many contests. The best cow, the best pig, the best sheep are hailed as "Grand Champions." The best cake, the best raspberry jam, the finest pickles, and the most delectable pie are awarded blue ribbons. Cheese and butter, honey and maple syrup, fruits and vegetables, agricultural products of all kinds win prizes of distinction based on criteria for their category. Handcrafted items are also entered into competition, and ribbons won displayed on the home mantle. While almost anyone can enter one of these contests, there is only one blue rib- bon, only one grand champion. In Sunday's Gospel we hear Jesus respond to a question posed to him about the number who will be saved. One of the tenets of our faith concerns the universal salvific will of God, that is, God wants everyone to be saved. But God has also given humankind free will, meaning that peo- ple have a choice in accepting God's invitation to salvation. For those of us who are believers, it can be difficult to comprehend that someone would not want to enjoy eternal life. But that is a choice that God offers, and the Gospel this Sunday reinforces the idea that being saved is more than just a casual acquaintance with Jesus. Like a competition at the state fair, there are criteria for entering the kingdom of God. They are not mysterious. There is not some secret code that we need to know. What is needed is clearly spelled out just like the rules for entering a pie or jar of canned peaches. We need to love God. We need to listen to his word. We need to be compassionate toward others. We need to love our neighbor. The difference between these criteria and entering a state fair contest is that there is always more than one grand champion in the Christian life. Everyone who follows faithfully gets a blue ribbon 2640 STONEY RIDGE ROAD AVON, OHIO 44011

Take a Spiritual Journey This Summer Dioce- san Pilgrimage 2013: All Weekends beginning May 18/19 through Sept. 7/8 Join the parish community for Mass See Gods beauty in the sacred statues and artwork Experience the culture and history of the diocese During this time of pilgrimage, celebrate the Sacrament of Rec- onciliation at any local church in the diocese Reflect on your own spiritual journey Visit one of the parishes listed to receive your Pilgrim passport. Then, travel to the remaining parishes to have your passport stamped, including: St. Mary, Elyria St. Mary, Painesville St. Mary, Wooster St. Sebastian, Akron Complete your journey at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Downtown Cleveland . The first 1,200 to complete their pilgrimage with a fully stamped passport, receive a commemorative Year of Faith medal blessed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Most of us are familiar with the idea of making a pilgrimage. People have been taking such jour- neys for thousands of years. For Christians, some sites became pilgrimage destinations because they were important in the life of Jesus, like Jerusalem or Bethlehem. Others, like Lourdes or Gua- dalupe, are connected with the Virgin Mary. During the Year of Faith, several churches have been designated by Bishop Richard Lennon as pilgrimage sites in the Diocese of Cleveland. Why make the journey to these places? One important reason is be- cause we hold these places to be sacred. Because of their history, we expect to encounter God there. They are places where it seems as if there is less distance between us and God, as if there is a more direct connection with God. When we walk through the door, we transition into a new place where we sense that there is better communication between heaven and earth. For religious people, sacred space focuses us, giving us a fixed point towards which we can re-orient ourselves. When we do this, we have the opportunity for transcendence, to rise up to meet God who comes down to meet us. For more information visit us online at www.welcomecatholics.com.
===`xx|z 9 Xx=== Dear Lord, Bless those who work and learn in our Catholic schools. Give our teachers the grace every day to be models of you to all they meet. Give our students the desire to learn their lessons, and also to grow closer to you through our Mother and our older siblings, the Saints. Give our administrators the guidance they need, to balance the needs of the school with a life modeled on you and your compassion. Give our school parents the understanding, to make the most of school based on you for the academic and spiri- tual lives of their children. Amen.
