The last three years with BPA, I was the Student Liaison between Brevard Community College and BPA. Beth Morrone and myself co-chaired this position for two of these years, and during this time, we became friends as well as paralegals. Membership during this time increased, and the commitment by us brought in many students who became members of BPA. Im married to Al and we will celebrate our 25th Anniversary next year. Notable News from PAF

Orientation for new Presidents and Chapter Treasurers was held in Orlando on August 3rd. Tracy King and Hope Lutz represented our Chapter. PAF intends to distribute the proposed revisions to the PAF bylaws to the full membership on September 4, 2013. A special meeting will be held at the fall seminar to vote on the amendments. Three bids have been received from vendors for revisions to the PAF web site. Each Chapter President has been asked to review the bids and submit their comments back to PAF by September 30th. PAF is asking that Chapters with responsibility for hosting the two day conference to submit hotel information one year in advance to headquarters. It is getting harder for PAF to secure hotel space if there is only a few months till the seminar. PAF is requesting that one member from each Chapter serve on a PAF Committee.

Notable News from Your Board of Directors

The Board of Directors will be meeting on Monday, August 26, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at Perkins Restaurant, 8200 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne, FL 32940. Please feel free to attend if your schedule permits. Suntree Country Club: We have been able to work out a plan with Suntree Country Club to use the large room upstairs when available. I think for those of you who were able to attend our meeting in August, you would agree that the atmosphere was so much nicer than our normal meeting room. We will not know which room our meeting will be in until close to our meeting date, but there will always be a sign posted at the front entrance of the Club. We also had the Club include two no-dinner seats at each table rather then have one large table in the back of the room. This helps ensure that everyone has an opportunity for networking and socializing with different members each month. Incentives for Members to Bring Guests: The August meeting was our kick off for the membership incentive program. The program encourages members to bring guest(s) to meetings and in return their name is placed in a raffle for a beautiful basket. For every guest you bring, you get a raffle ticket. Only those members bringing a guest are able to put a raffle ticket in the basket. We had a total of five guests at our meeting, guests of four members. Since that time, one of the guests has become a member. In addition, our speaker brought a colleague and an intern. The attorney encouraged the intern to get involved in the organization and made sure he had the membership information before he left. Congratulation to Jessica Pauley who won the basket. A big thank you to the law firm of Moser & Moser who donated the basket contents and Jeremie Ayala for putting it all together. Annual Audit: The Audit Committee is currently reviewing all the financial records of the Chapter as part of our annual responsibilities to PAF. A full report will be given at the scheduled Board Meeting on August 26th.

COMMUNITY SERVICE This September BPA proudly supports the Wounded Warrior Project.

Wounded Warriors: Can you even imagine what our military and wounded veterans must be going through. As reported in the Lamp, many heroes are returning with multiple amputations or other disabling injuries not completely fixed even by fancy prosthetics, methodical rehabilitation, and job retraining. Roseann Nelson Scholarship:

Roseann Nelson, CP was a founding member of BPA and the long time paralegal to Leonard Spielvogel, Esquire. Ms. Nelson exemplified the professionalism required to be a successful paralegal and was a great mentor to all members of Brevard Countys legal community, in particular its paralegals. Mr. Spielvogel, wanting to honor Roseann after her untimely passing, endowed a scholarship to BPA to be maintained in Ms. Nelsons name. The Roseann Nelson, CP Professional Development Scholarship was established to encourage a chapter member to attain the CP, ACP, or CFLA designation, through the National Association of Legal Assistant (NALA) and the Paralegal Association of Florida, Inc. (PAF).

fellow students about the scholarship and the membership requirement. Students interested in PAF/BPA membership only need to go online for the application and instructions on how to apply. www.pafinc.org

If you are interested in certification but want to understand more please review your copy of the June/July Newsletter issued last month that gives a detailed overview. If you do not have a copy of the newsletter, it is posted on-line under our Chapter page on the PAF website at www.pafinc.org.

MESSAGE FROM A RECEIPENT: On May 31, 2008, I received from the National Association of Legal
Assistants my certificate of designation as a Certified Paralegal. BPA directly made this possible with the Roseann Nelson, CP Professional Development Scholarship. I applied for and received this scholarship while still attending classes for my paralegal studies. What a relief it was, especially as a student, to know that as soon as I graduated, my certification exam and study materials were already paid for - all I had to do was pass! The application process for BPA scholarships is simple. BPA wants to help its members and encourages us to continue striving for professional recognition. Roseann Nelson exemplified the professional paralegal. Receiving this scholarship, and subsequently my CP designation, made me proud to be part of these organizations and this group of individuals. I encourage current students to apply for any scholarship they are eligible for. There is nothing to lose and so much to gain! In fact, I am pleased to have just received my new certificate, qualifying me for five more years as a CP. Thanks again to BPA and Mr. Spielvogel, as well as my current employers, Michael Kahn, Esq. and Roma Molinaro, CP, FRP, who have consistently encouraged and fostered my growth in this field and as a person.
