Heyguys!
I'vebeenthinkingofdoingsuchguidesincemyrecentworklog...Ihadmanyquestionsregardingallthesleeving
ihaddid,frommanypersons...Andsinceijustorderedsomefansandsomesleeving\heatshrink,ithoughtit
wouldbeagoodideatomakealittleguidewhileimatit.
Basically,sleevingafanisprettysimple.Itcanbedonebyanyonehavingalittlepatienceandevenifnotin
possessionoftherighttoolstoworkwith...Nowifyou'renotcareful,you'llendupneedingtoreplacethe3pin
metalheadersusingacrimptool...Inthisparticularguide,wewilltrytoavoidneedingtodosobybeingreal
carefulanddoingthingstherightway.

Whatyouwillneed
Somesleevingandsomeheatshrink
Personally,for3pinfans,iuse1/4"Blackwiresleevingand3/8"BlackHeatshrinktubing.Makesuretoget
expandablesleevingsoyoucanfitthesleevingoverthewiresmetalheaders.

Inmyreview,iwillbesleevingthemostcommonusedfanforwatercoolingsetups.TheYateLoonMedium
speed.Thisonehas4BlueledandisUVreactive.

Youwillneed:

apairofscissors
astandardcutter(Orarazorblade)
anailcutter
apaperclip
a4pinto3pinconnector(Justtotestoutthatthe3pinsarecorrectlysittingintotheconnectoronceyouhave
insertedthemback)

Next:Preparingthefanforthesleeving
Butfirst,remembertherightemplacementforeachwireintheconnector!
Blackonthefarleft.(Ground)
Redinthemiddle.(Power)
Yellowontherightside.(RPMMonitor)

Onceyounotedtherightemplacementforeachwires,youcanstartbycuttingofftheextrawiresforthe4pin
connectors.

Now,idorealizethatsomepersonsouttherewillwanttousethatextra4pinconnectortoconnecttheirfanbut
inmypersonalexperienceandfromwhatihaveseen,mostpersonswillonlyusethe3pinconnectortoconnect
thefantoafancontroller.Sogoawayandcutthatpartoff!

Thetrickypart
Oncetheextrawiresarecutoff,wewillnowremovethepinsfromtheconnector.ThisisTHEtrickypart.One
thingyoumustknowbeforedoingthisisthat,ifyouapplytoomuchpressureonthelittleclips(thatarelocated
ontoeachofthe3metalpins),toactuallybeabletoremovethe3pinheadersfromtheconnector,youcan
damagethemandyou'llhavetoreplacethemwithnewones...Andthatsexactlywhatwewanttoavoid...
Havealook:

Seethatlittlemetalpartthatraiseontopofthepin?Well,thatswhatyouhavetopushtobeabletorelease
thepinheaderfromtheconnector.
Whenyouareready,takeyourpaperclipandunfoldit.Nowplacethe3pinconnectoronaflatsurface,take
yourpaperclipandgentlypushthatmetalpartshownabove.

Onceyousuccessfullyremovedall3pinsfromtheconnector,getreadyforthesleevingjob!
Butfirst,cutoffthesecondredandblackwiresfromthepins.Usethenailcutterforthistask.

Onceremoved,usethenailcuttertoplythemetalwallaroundthewireoryoucanuseacrimptoolifyouhave
one.

Sleevingjob
Next:Takeyoursleeving,putitnexttothefan'swiresandmeasurewhatyouwillneed.Thencutthesleeving
usingthescissors.

Nowtakeyourlighterandlightlyheatuptheendofyoursleeving.Thiswillpreventthesleevingfromfraying.

____________________________________
Then,regroupall3pinsandinsertthemintooneendofyoursleeving.

____________________________________
Dragthewiresallthewayupuntilyougetthemoutattheotherend.

____________________________________

Finishingthejob
Nowthatyouhavethesleevingoverthewires,it'stimetoputthe3pinsbackintotheconnector.
Butbeforethat,takeyourheatshrinkoutandcuttwo12"piecesusingyourscissors.Slipthemoverthe3pins
andleavethemoverthesleevingfornow.

Now,takeyourcutterorrazorblade,andplybackallthelittlemetalclipswehadtopushearliertoremovethe
pinsfromtheconnector.Likethat:

Onceall3aregoodtogo,insertthemback,oneatatime,intotheconnector.Makesurethey'llstayinplace!

____________________________________
Whenallpinsareintotheconnector,usea3pinto4pinadapter(Oranythingelsewhereyoucanpluga3pin
fan)andplugyourfanintoit.Thisisjusttomakesurethatallpinsarecorrectlysittingintotheconnector.If
onepingetsoutoftheconnector,itmeansthatitwasn'tsittingcorrectly.
Oknowthatall3pinsarecorrectlysittingintotheconnector,it'stimetoheatuptheheatshrink!
Nowtakethefurthestpieceofheatshrinkandslipithalfoverthewireandhalfoverthesleeving.

Wheninplace,startheatingonesideoftheheatshrink.Basically,youhavetoputtheflamerealclosetothe
heatshrinkwithouttouchingit.Ifyoutouchitfortoolong,it'llburnupandyou'llhavethatburnedplasticsmell
inyourroom...Heh

andlookintotheconnector.You'llseethateachpinshas2metalcliponsidesthatrefrainthemfrombeing
removedthroughthebottomofthemolexconnector.Now,ifyoutakeacutterorrazorbladeorpaperclipand
pushinthosemetaclips,youwillbeabletoremovethepinthroughthebottomofthemolexconnector.
Then,laterifyouwanttoputbackthepins,youjusthavetoplybackthemetalclipsonthesidesofthepins
(Likeyouhavetodofora3pinfan)andinsertthemback.Wheninsertingbackthepinintothemolex,atsome
pointyouwilleara"click"sound.Thismeansthatthepiniscorrectlysittingintothemolexconnector.
