LITURGICAL TIDBITS BREVES DE LA LITURGIA

Our liturgy is beautiful, ancient and yet does have a flow and change with time. Recently our Holy Father, Pope Francis, officially approved a change in Eucharistic Prayers II, III and IV of the Mass to include the name of St. Joseph. The additions, which in English amount to five words inserted in the Eucharistic Prayers, were issued by the Vaticans Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. The words, "with blessed Joseph, her spouse", follow a mention of Mary. The change, in the works under former Pope Benedict XVI before his retirement, reflect the church's growing interest in "fatherly care".

Joseph was someone who protected the Blessed Virgin and who cared for Jesus. We call him the foster father of Jesus, but we have to think of that word in the sense that he fostered the humanity of Jesus, he nurtured and helped Christ grow into an adult." Back in 1962, just as Vatican II was getting started, Pope John XXIII had made the decision to insert the name of St. Joseph into Eucharistic Prayer I. John XXIII died before the end of the Council. Following Vatican II, when additional Eucharistic prayers were adopted -- whether intentionally or because of all the changes being made at the time -- St. Joseph was inadvertently not included in additional Eucharistic Prayers. When Pope Benedict XVI was pope, we received news that he was getting requests from people around the world asking to have St. Joseph added. He did what was necessary to get it done but left it to Pope Francis to approve. Pope Francis hasn't shied away from his own interest in the saint. He chose March 19, the feast of St. Joseph, as the date for his inaugural Mass, and has a flower on his coat-of-arms symbolizing the saint. "St. Joseph appears as a strong and courageous man, a working man, yet in his heart we see great tenderness, which is not the virtue of the weak, but rather a sign of strength of spirit and a capacity for concern, for compassion, for genuine openness to others, for love," Francis said at his inaugural Mass. As pope, Benedict, whose birth name is Joseph, also spoke highly of the saint after whom he was named. The decree from the Vatican about the new prayers is titled "Fatherly Care", and describes St. Joseph as "an exemplary model of the kindness and humility that the Christian faith raises to a great destiny, and demonstrates the ordinary and simple virtues necessary for men to be good and genuine followers of Christ". There are some questions about what prayerful position should we take during the Lords Prayer. Before the recent changes in the liturgy there was some discussion about restoring the ancient Orans position of prayer for the laity to the proclamation of the Our Father. In Mass the Orans position describes the gesture whereby the priest, during certain parts of his audible, leadership prayers at Mass, extends his arms out from his sides, with hands open and facing out. Orans is the Latin word for Praying and is one of the most ancient of prayer positions in the Judeo-Christian tradition. This is how Christ would have prayed. The Orans position (sometimes called the orante), is easily distinguishable from when the priest folds or joins his hands, and which position is prescribed for the celebrant at several Painting from points in Mass: for example, during the Opening Prayer and most of the the Catacomb Eucharistic prayer. of St Priscilla With respect to the recitation of the Our Father during Mass, the current General Instruction of the Roman Missal speaks only to the gesture of the priest, not the congregation. After introducing the prayer with hands joined, says the general instruction in No. 152, the priest then pronounces the Our Father with hands extended. The guidelines are silent as to what the laity does during the prayer. Therefore the Church does not instruct the Faithful to any particular posture during the Lords Prayer; some lay persons in the congregation adopting, notably during the Our Father, the Orans position as their own. Many Catholics are in the habit of joining each others hands in the Orans posture during the Lords Prayer along with the celebrant. Some do this on their own as a private devotional posture while some congregations make it a general practice for their communities. Are these practices permissible under the current rubrics, either as a private practice not something adopted by a particular parish as a communal gesture? Again, no position is prescribed in the present Roman Missal for an assembly gesture during the Lords Prayer so what you do with your hands during the Lords Prayer is up to you!

Having Surgery?
Give one of our priests a call PRIOR to your surgery, so that anointing can be given at a time when you are less stressed. Call the parish office at 630-6680918, ext. 600, and set a time to come in BEFORE your surgery for anointing.

All meetings are 6:30p-8p in the Youth Ministry Center above the garages at the parish offices. Upcoming meeting: 8/18; 9/8; 9/22

Hospital Visits
Our priests are available to make hospital visits. Because of HIPAA Laws the Hospital does not notify churches when parishioners are there. Please notify the Saint Johns Parish Office when a loved one is there giving us the name and room number. We want to do our best to minister to all the Hospitalized!

Wedding Information
Getting married? Give us a ring! Please contact one of the parish priests as soon as you become engaged and at least six months before the wedding date. Catholics need to be attending church every Sunday.
