Character Analysis:

Ebenezer Scrooge You are about to write a research paper. It will be several pages long. It will be a combination of research you will do from the book A Christmas Carol and your own thoughts and ideas about and explanations of the information you find in the novel. This means you will be taking quotations from the book to explain your ideas and noting the page number of the quotations. At the end of each numbered section is the recommended minimum number of paragraphs you should write in order to fully answer and explain the information requested by the section.
1. Describe Scrooges personality at the beginning of the story. Cite evidence from the book to support your assertion. Describe how Charles Dickens reveals the personality of this character directly, indirectly, both, or neither. Again, cite examples. Give at least one example of Scrooges interactions with other characters, at least one example of his dialogue, and at least one example of an action Scrooge takes, each of which should support your hypothesis. (3 paragraphs) Cite examples of how Scrooge acted when he was younger (either as a child or a young man), and explain how those examples are similar to or different than the way Scrooge acts at the beginning of the story. (2 paragraphs) Explain why or how Ebenezer Scrooge became the cold, hard person we meet at the beginning of the story. Cite examples from the story. (2 paragraphs) Compare Scrooge to one other character from the story. State whether Scrooge is very similar to that character, or very different than that character. Show at least one way he is similar to that character, and at least one way he is different. Give at least a third example that supports the assertion you made, that Scrooge is either very similar to or very different than the other character you chose. (3 paragraphs) Choose the three most important reasons, events, sights, or situations that cause Scrooge to change his ways from the beginning of the story to the end. Cite the examples, and explain why the reasons you chose are the ones which affect Scrooge the most, making them the most important reasons for his transformation. (3 paragraphs) Your last paragraph should be a summary of Scrooges transformation. (1 paragraph) Several lines after your last paragraph, or on a separate sheet of paper, create a bibliography. A bibliography and proper quotation is necessary for any work you do that uses someone elses specific words or ideas. If you do not give credit to the person from whom you borrowed the thoughts, you are PLAGIARIZING. PLAGIARISM is the theft of someone elses work or ideas. It is illegal, as well as being morally wrong; if you are caught plagiarizing, you will almost definitely be failed, quite probably expelled, and possibly jailed, fined, or, most likely, sued for very large amounts of money.
