Aguatis Individual Report I

1. Purpose Clearly Defined Definition The purpose of the business research the problem involved or the decision to be made should be clearly defined and sharply delineated in terms as unambiguously as possible.

Assessment

The researchers tried to present the purpose of the study by the following operations: presenting the research problem, highlighting the importance of the research, theoretical and conceptual framework.

The research problem After one term of graduate studies, the Mulat Diwa program is hardly evident in most, if not all, of the researchers courses. The research problem was not clearly worded and defined. The use of the phrase

hardly evident was not adequately explained, hence, individual interpretation can be made out of it. This affects the validity of the construct.

The researcher should ensure that words used to state the research problem are unambiguous. One element lacking in the statement of the research problem is specificity.

Although the Mulat Diwa Program was specifically mentioned, other words were not as specific like the phrase after one term of graduate studies, since graduate studies can mean other programs. Also, the use of after one term could imply other meaning since it could lead the readers into assuming that the problem only occur after one term and not during a term.

Importance of the research By finding out how the Mulat Diwa Program has taken root on the students, the school can then address on how to properly address the effectivity of the program The purpose/importance of the research was also not properly worded. The researchers should be very specific in stating the purpose of their research. In addition, awareness of the program does not really reveal the problems to which corrective actions can be taken and initiated.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework presented was that of the Mulat Diwa where theoretically sound business theories are coupled with socially relevant activities, problems and projects. The researchers also focused on the deficiencies of the current model, as shown below: difficult to take into account all of the diverse experiences of the students when it comes to collaborative learning due to time constraints, integration of experiences and social integration (socially relevant activities) would be facilitated by faculty a thorough and more robust experience with personal and social integration would not be realized in this model

Through the presentation of the model used, the researcher formulated four investigative questions below: 1. How aware are the students with regard to the Mulat Diwa Program? 2. How can the Mulat Diwa program be manifested in socially relevant activities? 3. Do socially relevant activities exist in the classroom setting? 4. Are these socially relevant activities efficiently or deficiently integrated?

The above investigative question should then be the areas where responses should be measured. Research designs should be sufficient enough to answer the investigative questions. 2. Research Process Detailed Definition The research procedures used should be described in sufficient detail to permit another researcher to repeat the research.

Assessment

The researchers adequately presented in detail the procedures they performed in gathering, measuring and interpreting the data. The following were the processes that the researchers performed:

Data Collection Procedures The researchers used survey to collect information. Purposive, non-probability sampling was used. Samples came from students from 2 Leadership classes in the Ateneo Graduate School of Business Standard MBA program Survey was conducted before or after each class Respondents were differentiated into three groups: 1-3 terms, 4-6 terms and 6 and above.

Data Analysis and Interpretation A 4-point Likert scale is used to measure the responses. Data were interpreted using statistical measure of central tendency such as mean, mode, frequency and standard deviation The researchers used statistical data to make inferences.

3. Research design thoroughly planned

Definition

The procedural design of the research, and its choice among competing designs should be clearly described and carefully planned to yield results that are as objective as possible.

Assessment

In order to assess how thoroughly planned the research design is, we would need to look on three important aspects of a research design: data collection design, sampling design, and instrument developing.

Data Collection Design

The researchers used survey as their research design.

The survey research design is a

process using highly structured interview which employs measurement tools such as questionnaire or interview schedule.

However, did not make a clear explanation on why they chose survey over other research designs such as focus group discussion, experience survey, etc. The researchers presented the advantages of survey such as ease of data gathering and its ability to obtain comparable data among respondents.

Research design should be adequate enough to measure responses that would sufficiently answer the investigative questions. Surveys can be an ideal design when answering questions such as what, when, where, how much; however, it may not sufficiently answer the how questions specifically when it involves causal relationships. But since the investigative question#2, where a how question was presented, does not measure causal relationship, survey would be adequate to obtain data from respondents.

Sampling Design

The researchers used purposive, judgement sampling; a non-probability sampling. The researcher selects the respondents with a certain purpose, to answer certain questions, to include certain groups and exclude others, to include extremes. The purpose has to be made clear. However, the researcher failed to elaborate the purpose to which purposive sampling was used to select the respondents of the survey. The sample population used may not necessarily be entirely the population that the researcher is trying to reach. As such, since such a small sample population is often used, a small variation in the sample will cause deviance in the results.

Population and Sampling Frame

The researchers did not clearly establish the population criteria to which samples were drawn. They only presented the characteristics of the samples. Hence, the representativeness of the sample in relation to the population cannot be adequately measured.

Instrument Development

The researcher used a self-administered survey questionnaire in order to obtain the responses. It is therefore imperative to test the questions using guidelines on question content and question wording. This would test the construct validity of the research as well as reveal the limitations based on the questions asked. Question Assessment How aware are the students with regard to the Mulat Diwa Program? Mulat Diwa Program is the value proposition of the school The purpose of business is not only for profits but for also nation building. Mulat Diwas building blocks are awareness of socio-economic conditions, legal compliance, performing business economic responsibility, community investment and global competitiveness

How can the Mulat Diwa program be manifested in socially relevant activities? I am given opportunities to suggest activities for the betterment of the less fortunate in a classroom setting. I am able to voice out opinions regarding socially relevant issues in my community. Do socially relevant activities exist in the classroom setting? I am given activities or exercises that show concern for the less fortunate as well as conservation of resources and the environment. I am given real world examples regarding social or community issues that tie in with the lessons that are given in the classroom. Are these socially relevant activities efficiently or deficiently integrated? The Mulat Diwa Program is manifested in the different course curriculum offered by the school. The activities initiated by the teachers are geared towards not only for profit but also for nation building. The teachers do regular monitoring and evaluation of activities to students through feedback. I am given by the teacher opportunity to give concrete business ideas on how to uplift the economic condition of the needy in the country.

4. High ethical standards applied

Definition

Researchers often work independently and have significant latitude in designing and executing projects. A research design that includes safeguards against causing mental or

physical harm to participants and makes data integrity a first priority should be highly valued.

Ethical issues in research reflect important moral concerns about the practice of responsible behaviour in society.

Assessment

The researchers presented the process on how they are able to address the ethical issues in their report. Some of the most common ethical issues in using survey design are:

confidentiality, informed consent, privacy and anonymity.

Confidentiality

Informed Consent

Privacy

Anonymity

5. Limitations frankly revealed

Definition

The researcher should report, with complete frankness, flaws in procedural design and estimate their effect on the findings.

Assessment The researchers presented the researchs main limitation which is that it will just be focusing on the integration of socially relevant activities that are implemented in the classroom with regard to the Mulat Diwa Program and will not be covering the other two parts of the proposed integration model.

The researchers, however, did not explicitly state the impact on the scope and limitation of the research study based on the selection and implementation of the research design. For example, the limitation on the representativeness of the respondents chosen was not clearly stated. 6. Adequate analysis for decision makers needs

Definition

Analysis of the data should be extensive enough to reveal its significance, what managers call insights. The methods of analysis should be appropriate.

Assessment

7. Findings presented unambiguously

Definition

Some evidence of the competence and integrity of the researcher may be found in the report itself. Presentation of data should be comprehensive, reasonably interpreted, easily

understood by the decision maker, and organized so that the decision maker can readily locate critical findings.

Assessment

8. Conclusions and Recommendation Justified

Definition

Conclusions should be limited to those for which the data provide an adequate basis. Good researchers always specify the conditions under which their conclusions seem to be valid.
