CE 616: Structural Dynamics Home Work #2 (Due before Quiz 1) Instructions: Use only 1 page (both sides) for

each problem. You should work on your own. Problem 1(a): An object of mass m (or weight W) stretches a spring by itself when hanging from the ceiling. The spring is initially displaced uo inches upward from its static equilibrium position and given an initial velocity of v o downward. Find the displacement at any time t, u (t) and plot. Use the following absolute values (unit less), m=1/2, W=16, =8/9, uo=1/2, vo=1. You must decide sign correctly. Problem 1(b): Take the spring and mass system from the first problem and attach a damper to it that will exert a force 5 (unit less) when the velocity is 2 (unit less). For the same initial conditions stated in problem 1, find the displacement at any time t, u(t) and plot. What kind of vibration phenomenon did you observe? Problem 1(c): Replace the damper in problem 2 by a new damper that exerts a force 12 (unit less) when the velocity is 2 (unit less), and find the displacement at any time t, u(t) and plot. What kind of vibration phenomenon did you observe? Problem 1(d): Replace the damper in problem 2 by a new damper that exerts a force 17 (unit less) when the velocity is 2 (unit less), and find the displacement at any time t, u(t) and plot. What kind of vibration phenomenon did you observe? Problem 2: A 25 N weight is suspended from a spring which has a stiffness k = 0.42 Nmm-1. The weight is given an upwards velocity of 5 ms-1 when it is 40 mm above its equilibrium position. Determine the equation for the motion of the weight, and its maximum upward displacement. Assume positive displacement is downward. Problem 3: A mass of 2 kg is supported by a damped spring, where the damping constant is 2.8 Nsm1 . The mass is displaced 20 mm from its equilibrium position and released from rest, and the frequency is observed to be 2.5 Hz. Find (a) the displacement after 5 complete cycles (b) the time taken for the displacement to be reduced to 5% of the initial displacement.

Problem 4:

Problem 5: Consider the machine of previous example, where viscous damping has now been introduced such that damping coefficient, c is 5 kN.s/m. Calculate the response amplitude, the phase angle, and the force transmitted to the foundations when the driving frequency is (a) 20 Hz and (b) 2 Hz. The amplitude of the applied force is, as before, 2500 N. Problem 6: Consider HW#1 problem 3. From an experiment it is found that when the machine operates at a frequency of 50 Hz with an forcing amplitude of 100 N, the phase angle between the exciting force and the vertical displacement is 90o in the steady state, and the maximum amplitude of the displacement is 10 mm. Find k and c . Use m=2 kg, = 0.4 kg/m, L=1 m.
