Auto Collimation Of Jig Transit 1 Scope: Positional accuracy of certain precision parts on fabricated assemblies are often required to verify with respect to two reference planes perpendicular to each other. By setting a pair of optical instruments (jig transits) with their lines of sight precisely perpendicular to each other, two vertical planes perpendicular to each other can be established. The components on the fabricated / machined assemblies can be verified with respect to these planes. This procedure covers sequence of operations for setting two jig transits with their lines of sight precisely perpendicular to each other by auto collimation process. Objective: The procedure is prepared with an objective of creating clarity among the people of operating level on auto collimation process. The procedure gives systematic approach in setting the necessary optical instruments and accessories for precise measurements of readings from two vertical planes perpendicular to each other. Auto Collimation: When two instruments are set at infinity focus and aimed at each other so that cross wires of both the instruments coincide with one another, then instruments are said to be collimated. Auto collimation process can be used to position the line of sight of a jig transit perpendicular to the line of sight of another unit with the help of Auto collimation conversion unit. Instruments & accessories: The following instruments and accessories shall be made available. a. Jig transits (Model 711010) 2 nos. b. Auto collimating eyepiece (Model 711241) c. Right angle eyepiece (Model - 711241) d. Circular Auto reflective mirror (Model 611130) e. Optical micrometer with vernier scale (Model - 7111111) f. Instrument stands (Model 715030) - 2 nos. g. Lateral Adjuster (Model 715085) Identification Of Jig Transits: Two Jig Transits are required to set two vertical planes perpendicular to each other. One Jig Transit is to be positioned parallel to the reference plane of the part to which perpendicular plane needs to be established. This instrument is called as Reference Jig Transit. The other instrument is known as Auxiliary Jig Transit which is initially used to verify the positional accuracy of circular auto reflective mirror on the Reference Jig Transit. Subsequently the Auxiliary Jig Transit can be used as Auto Collimating Jig Transit. Mounting of Auto Reflective Mirror: An Auto reflective mirror is to be mounted on to the R eference Jig Transit as shown in Annexure I. The reflecting surface of the Auto reflective mirror is required to be precisely parallel to the plain developed by the line of sight. Follow the sequence of operations stated below to ensure the precise parallelism of the two. 6.1 Mount the circular Auto Reflective Mirror on to the horizontal axis of the telescope. The mirror has the three adjustable screws to tilt the reflecting face.

Auto Collimation Of Jig Transit 6.2 Mount another Auxiliary Jig Transit and an optical scale near the Reference Jig Transit as shown in the Annexure I. 6.3 Focus the image of a particular optical scale reading on the mirror with the cross wires of the Auxiliary Jig Transit and lock the telescope position. 6.4 Turn the telescope of Reference Jig Transit vertically in increments on its horizontal axis. The location of the cross wire with respect to the reading on the image of optical scale within the mirror will change. 6.5 Adjust reflecting plain of the mirror with one or more screws behind the mirror in such a way that the original reading of the optical scale within the mirror is coinciding with the cross wire of Auxiliary jig transit. 6.6 Repeat the process of para 6.4 & 6.5 until the original reading on the scale remain unaltered even when the telescope of Reference Jig Transit rotates 360 on its axis. With this setting the reflecting plain of the mirror is made precisely parallel to the plain developed by the line of sight. 7 Setting Of Reference Jig Transit Near the Job: 7.1 Fix the Reference Jig Transit on a suitable tripod stand near the job on a convenient location. The instrument shall be positioned at an appropriate height for a person to view through the eyepiece comfortably. 7.2 Position the Jig Transit with its line of sight nearly parallel to the reference plane of the part for which the perpendicular plane / line is to be established. 7.3 Draw a line on the floor parallel to the reference plane of the job. 7.4 Level the Jig Transit in accordance with HED-HZW-INS-P-092. 7.5 Look through the Telescope and turn the eyepiece-focusing knob until cross wires are sharply seen. 7.6 Adjust line of sight of the telescope with the help of an Azimuth tangent Screw inline parallel to the reference plane. An optical scale shall be used to set the line of sight parallel to the reference plane. Set Up Of the Auto Collimating Jig Transit: A Jig transit is required to be positioned perpendicular to the reference plane of the part. This instrument is called as Auto Collimating Jig Transit. Follow the sequence of operations stated below to ensure the precise perpendicularity of line of sight from auto Collimating Jig Transit to the line of sight of Reference Jig Transit. 8.1 A lateral adjuster (Cross Slide) shall be mounted to the A uto Collimating Jig Transit. Fix the instrument with the cross slide on a vertical stand whose height can be adjusted. 8.2 Position the Jig Transit anywhere on a line perpendicular to the line of sight from reference Jig transit. This line shall pass through the position of mirror on Reference Jig Transit. This can be done with the help of a simple line marked perpendicular to the earlier line drawn. The line shall pass through the location of reference Jig Transit. 8.3 The telescope of Auto Collimating Jig Transit shall direct to the mirror on Reference Jig transit. 8.4 Level the Collimating Jig transit in accordance with HED-HZW-INS-P-092 8.5 Mount an Auto collimating right angle eyepiece on to the Collimating Jig transit as shown Annexure II. Auto Collimation Of Jig Transit 9.1 9.2 Having installed both Jig Transits, switch on the Auto Collimation converter on Auto Collimation Jig Transit and focus the telescope on Auto reflective mirror with the help of Lateral adjuster (cross slide) and azimuth tangent knob. Aim the telescope of Collimating Jig Transit such that the image of Target in the mirror can be seen in the telescope. It will be necessary to adjust the telescopefocusing knob to recognize the target. When target appears, focus the same precisely. With the fine adjustments of telescope height, cross slide movement and Azimuth tangent knob, match cross wires of the telescope with that of Auto reflective target. Refer annexure III for details. Now, by tilting the telescope in the vertical direction, a plane perpendicular to the line of sight of Reference Jig Transit is generated. With the help of optical scale, on predetermined locations on the job, reading can be measured from these two vertical planes perpendicular to each other.
