Levelling, Measuring & Verifying Horizontality Of Optical Instrumrnt 1 Scope Optical instrument (Automatic levels AS-2 / AS-2C of Nikon Corporation) is used for marking reference line / plane and measuring level difference of specific points from a true horizontal plane on fabricated assemblies. This procedure covers levelling & measuring the readings and verifying the horizontality of the instrument on its vertical axis. The procedure is not applicable to paragon level and jig transit of K&E Company. 1 Automatic Level (AS 2 / AS 2C): Automatic Level is an optical telescope, which generates a horizontal line of sight. The horizontal axis of the telescope rotates on a vertical pivot and there by a horizontal plane is generated by the line of sight. The plane generated by the line of sight is made precisely horizontal by levelling the telescope. The reference plane thus obtained by the line of sight is used for measuring relative positions of a set of points under consideration on a job. 2 Levelling the instruments: The instrument shall be kept on a horizontal rigid stool or screwed on a stable tripod stand at the required height. The meaningful reading is possible only if the line of sight remains precisely horizontal in any position of telescope. This can be obtained by levelling the instrument to the required accuracy. The circular level

Figure 1 (Refer Figure above) indicates the accuracy of horizontal level of the telescope. The air bubble in the circular level is to be placed inside the brown circle exactly at the centre, for the instrument to be within its automatic compensation range ( 12) of horizontality. This can be achieved by adjusting three levelling screws below the instrument. The air bubble in the circular level shall remain exactly at the centre of brown circle when the telescope rotates 360 and remains in any position. The level shall be verified prior to any reading.

Reading the measurements: Set the instrument at a location from where all points under consideration for reading are accessible through the line of sight. Level the instrument as per para 3 above. Remove the cape and look in to the telescope through the eyepiece. Turn the eyesight adjusting ring and focus on crosshairs inside the view field. Place an optical scale vertically on any one of the points (point A) under consideration. Turn the telescope to aim the scale. Directing the telescope to the scale, look through eyepiece and focus the scale reading by turning the focusing knob. Bring the scale to the centre of the view field by adjusting horizontal fine adjustment knob. Note the reading on the scale coinciding with the crosshairs inside the view field. Repeat the same for reading the remaining points under consideration. On completion of all readings (also in-between after some readings), verify the initial reading (Point A) for accuracy and repeatability of instrument. Readings of all points can be plotted on a graph paper and their relative positions from the horizontal plane can be derived.

Check on Horizontality of line of sight: The line of sight seen through the eyepiece is etched on the reticle inside the eyepiece. Unless the reticle is set at the right position inside the eyepiece, the line of site through the telescope will not be horizontal even when the air bubble is in the centre of the circular level. The procedure illustrated below provides the confirmation on accuracy of horizontality. 5.1 settings for Readings: Set two rods F and R with optical scale mounted on them at X distance apart from each other. (Distance shall be 30 to 50 Mtr.) 5.2 First Set of Readings: Set the instrument halfway between the two rods on a tripod stand as shown in the sketch below. Level the instrument as per para 3 above. Measure the readings in accordance with para 4 above on scale F as F1 and on scale R as R1. Find F1 R1. 5.3 Second Set of Readings: Reset the instrument in between the two rods at 2 Mtr distance away from Rod R as shown in the sketch below. The positions of rod R and F shall not be changed. Re-level the instrument and measure the second set of readings F2 and R2. Find F2 R2. 5.4 Conclusions: If difference in first set of readings (F1 R1) is same as that of difference in second set of readings (F2 - R2) the reticle is in its right position and the line of sight of the telescope is horizontal. If the variation in first set of readings is different from the variation in second set of readings, the line of sight is not horizontal and hence the reticle needs adjustment.
