Go here: PORTLAND at OWOSSO Owosso has been a rising program the past two
seasons, making the playoffs last year for the
first time since 2001. Portland won the Division
5 state title last season and will have to focus
on this opponent from the CAAC Red before a
CAAC White showdown with Lansing Catholic
the following week.
If you want to see a good early CMAC tilt:
FOWLER at LAINGSBURG Fowler and
new coach Kris Ernst open the season at state
power Mendon. Then another road trip looms
at Laingsburg in the second week. This is the
start of a huge conference stretch for the
Wolfpack as they play the Eagles at home,
then travel to Pewamo-Westphalia and Fulton
the following two weeks.

GETTING DEFENSIVE
With seven returning starters on
defense, this squad will be one of
the most experienced units in the
conference. Most of that returning talent is up front and in the
secondary. Leading the way in the
trenches will be senior Matt Ethington, who was honorable mention all-conference in 2012. Supporting him in the secondary is
all-conference standout Devin
Paritee.

NO SURPRISES
Perhaps the biggest shock of the
2012 postseason was East Lansings 10-6 victory over Everett in
the first round. With the Vikings
out for revenge and the rest of
the league improving, the Trojans
wont be sneaking up on anybody
in 2013. They will need to start
strong, too, as two of their final
three games are on the road
against Grand Ledge and Sexton.
David Cassilo
TAKING A PASS
While the Trojans have a few
replacements for Haines, finding
someone to take over for Jake
Pendred at quarterback figures to
be a little bit tougher. East Lansing has two quarterbacks on its
roster Gabe Horton-Pankow
and Reece Piotter. Whoever gets
the majority of snaps will need to
progress quickly for the team to
mirror its playoff run from last
season.

A WIDE NET
The Trojans biggest offensive
weapon last season was wide
receiver Javon Haines. His graduation leaves a gaping hole. Rather
than replace him with just one
player, expect several to step up.
Ken Washington, Zach Francisco
and Blake Ross should all be
receiving targets. The deep and
talented group should be one of
this teams strengths.

RUSHING AROUND
The return of 5-foot-8, 185pound junior E.J. Jackson and
the addition of sophomore
running backs Shonquise
Trainor (5-9, 170) and LaTone
Smith (5-9, 190) should make
the rushing attack one of the
strengths of the Eastern
football team. They have
experience, and theyve put in
a lot of work over the summer, Quakers coach Robert
McBride said.
IMPROVED DEFENSE
The Quakers gave up 33, 38,
33, 39, 54, 56, 9, 23 and 26
points, respectively, in their
nine games last fall for an
average of 34.6 per game.
That total should go down
since McBride thinks the
defensive line with Joe Gilmore, Josh Alston and Jon
Nyembrue will be a team
strength. He expects a smart,
aggressive defense.
NEW FOE: HASLETT
The Quakers schedule includes eight of the same
opponents as a year ago. The
one change is state power
Lowell was replaced by a
closer rival, but one thats still
quite tough year in and year
out, in Haslett.
COACHS GOALS
McBride wants to see Eastern
play a complete game and
limit turnovers and penalties.

FOURTH-YEAR QB
The Vikings return seven starters
on offense, including fourth-year
starting quarterback Lucas Barner.
Were fortunate to have our
quarterback back, Carruthers
said. Hes been an outstanding
leader. After an 0-9 freshman
year, Everett improved to 4-5 his
sophomore year and then 9-1 his
junior year. Defense, where Everett returns just one starter, and
the lines on both sides of the ball

ALMOST A REPEAT
If the Comets could have kept
Everett from converting a twopoint conversion that gave the
Vikings a 22-21 win last season,
Grand Ledge would have earned
a third straight CAAC Blue title
and a fourth in five years. The
Comets shared the 2011 league
title with Holt, East Lansing and
Sexton. And only a 34-27 loss to
Holt in 2009 kept Grand Ledge
from going 6-0 each year from
2008-10. So Bird has led Grand
Ledge to an outstanding 28-4
mark in the CAAC Blue the past
five years.
Returning running back Tyler Vincent, now a senior, looks for an opening against CAAC
Blue rival Holt last year. LSJ FILE
FAST TRACK
Grand Ledge adds three track and
field stars to its roster. Sophomore
running back/defensive lineman Ba
Blamo was runner-up in the 100
dash and wide receiver/defensive
back Stefan Jones was part of the
winning 4x200 relay as well as seventh in the 200 dash at the Greater
Lansing Honor Roll Meet. Quarterback/linebacker Nathan Megge
earned all-state in the 800 run at the
Division 1 meet. Megge returns to
football after trying cross country
last fall where he finished runnerup in the CAAC Blue.

Okemos Chiefs
LAST YEAR
FOURCAST
RETURN MEN
The Chiefs bring back 15 of their 22 starters
from last season. Although the team won just
two games in 2012, having that much experience bodes well for a turnaround. The returning group includes the majority of the linebacker core and the defensive backs. Now that
these players have been in Jack Wallaces
system for multiple seasons, expect an improvement.
QB BATTLE
The quarterback situation at Okemos is one to
watch. Juniors Grant Klaver and Mitch Kaczmarek figure to get the majority of the snaps,
but senior Darius Morris could work his way
into the mix. With receivers Chad Major and
Christian Moore back, there are people to
throw to, and its a matter of getting the right
player under center.
GROWING PAINS
It wasnt easy for Okemos in the first season
under Wallace in 2012. The Chiefs won just
two games, including several lopsided scores.
But Wallace has a history of success at Fowlerville and compiled a career record of 190-99
there. Okemos is seeking its first league title
since 1998, and while the school may not be
ready to contend this year, its heading in the
right direction.
LOADED SCHEDULE
As a member of the CAAC Blue, Okemos plays
one of the toughest conference schedules you
will find. The Chiefs have to make trips to
Grand Ledge and East Lansing, while home
games against Mason, Everett and Holt figure
to be tough. If Okemos can win more than the
two games it did last season, it will be a solid
accomplishment due to the strength of schedule.

PLAYOFF REGULARS
A 42-41 loss to Monroe in the second game of
last season wound up costing Sexton a playoff
spot for the first time since 2006. It also
marked just the second time the team missed
the postseason since Big Reds coach Dan Boggan took one of his squads to the playoffs for
the first time in 2004. That came after each of
his first two teams at Sexton finshed with 4-5
records.
TEAM STRENGTHS
Boggan thinks the team speed of this years
squad will be improved because of off-season
work. He says his players enjoy playing together, and they spend a lot of time off the
field together. Other than team chemistry,
Boggan thinks stronger leadershp will lead to
improvement on the field.
FUTURE 4-YEAR STARTING QB?
Crosstown rival Everett is being led this fall by
a fourth-year starting quarerback in Lucas
Barner. Sexton may be halfway on its way to
the same thing. Malick Mack took over the
quarterback duties as a freshman last season,
and then he served as point guard on the Big
Reds boys basketball team that won a Class B
district title and made a regional final. Sexton
fans are hoping Mack can lead his team to
where Barner led the Vikings last year a
CAAC Blue title. The Big Reds were part of a
four-way tie for the league title in 2011, but
they finished in a third-place tie with Holt and
East Lansing behind Everett and Grand Ledge
last fall.
COACHS GOALS
Boggan wants to see his team compete hard
and maintain our Sexton tradition of winning. He wants to see the Big Reds become
a great running team as we are accustomed
to and finish all games at a high level on
offense and defense.

GREAT RETURNS
Nine starters return on offense and eight come
back on defense for DeWitt and there is talent
everywhere. The Panthers started six sophomores
in the Division 3 semifinals and were rotating in
freshmen on the defensive line. To make it that
far with that much inexperience is impressive and
DeWitt should be primed for another deep run
this time around.
THE PROSPECT
Jake Johnson is one of the top quarterbacks in
the state, regardless of class, and is attracting
attention from Division 1 schools at the college
level. Johnson, who was hurt early last year and
did not return until late in the season, will have
plenty of weapons to work with in an everdangerous DeWitt offense. Despite the loss of LSJ
Dream Team receiver Ryan Anderson, three-year
senior receiver Chris Ruby is back as well as fellow senior receiver Justice Shankel, who had a
productive junior year. Senior running back John
Lippert is a deceptively strong ball carrier and
will be running in front of a line with four returning starters who are all over 230 pounds.
Senior Chris Bukoski highlights the group, standing 6-5 and weighing 275 pounds.
WHATS BACK AT LINEBACKER
Gone are LSJ Dream Team linebacker Jimmie
Melton (172 tackles, Division 3-4 all-state special
mention) and Class A all-area hybrid Noah Evans,
but DeWitt will still be strong at the linebacker
spot. Junior Connor Grice is the teams strongest
player, squatting 520 pounds. Senior Zack Deak is
a team captain and had a tremendous offseason
for the Panthers.
BIG LEG
Cameron West enters his senior season at placekicker after making the Dream Team as a junior.
He was 5 for 8 last season, with three makes
coming from 40 yards or longer and a long of 43.
He had three game-winning field goals and
boomed 26 kickoffs for touchbacks. West enters
his third year as the starter and will be in contention for all-state and LSJ Dream Team honors
once again.

NOWHERE TO GO BUT UP
Its been a rough two seasons for
Brett Shrader since he took over
at Fowlerville, as his team is just
3-15. This is a school that has
shown it can have success,
though, as under former coach
Jack Wallace it made the postseason 15 times from 1993-2010.
Focus on team unity and fundamentals are how Fowlerville plans
to get back to where it once was.
FINISHING GAMES
The Gladiators were 1-8 last season but lost five those games by
seven points or less. It shows that
with a few breaks and key plays
at the right times, Fowlerville had
the talent to make a run at the
postseason. Making those breaks
happen and coming through at
key moments is a focus for the
2013 squad.

STARTING UP FRONT
While LSJ male athlete of the year
Adam Coon has graduated, the
Gladiators still boast some size up
front. Senior tackle Wyatt Elzerman checks in at 6-foot-5, 300
pounds, while senior center Matt
Inman is 6-foot, 275 pounds. They
should make plenty of holes for
junior tailback Mason Litz.

FRESH FACES
After being a senior-heavy team
in 2012, the Gladiators return just
seven starters in 2013. With Litz as
one of those returnees, expect
this team to pound the ball behind its big offensive line. Litz is
also a force on the defensive side,
where he and Jake Kollek team
up to make a strong duo in the
back seven.

Haslett Vikings
FOURCAST
RILED UP
After playing in the shadow of Conor
Brewer last season, senior Graham Riley
will be the go-to back for the Vikings this
season. An all-league selection last year,
Riley figures to be the focal point of the
offense. He wont be the only one to get
carries, though. Seniors Cody Bosma and
Billy Haskins, along with junior Trace
Woodworth, figure to get their share of
touches.
ON THE LINE
Although the team lost standout linemen
Sam Rathbun and Derek Smith, there will
still be a formidable crew up front. Allleague selections Connor Wilson and
Griffin Fox will be leading the way in the
trenches. Theres a reason this team has
been so effective at running the ball in
recent years, and it all starts with the big
bodies up front.
RISE TO THE OCCASION
Perhaps the biggest issue for Haslett last
season was getting defensive stops when
it mattered. The Vikings gave up at least
20 points in all but one game. The team is
specifically looking for its defensive backs
to step up this year, since senior Jacob
Taylor is the only returning starter on the
unit. Sophomores Brandon Allen and Jake
Tahaney figure to get a chance to lock
down bigger roles.
SUPPORT SYSTEM
The Vikings are known for their running
game, but the team could become a
greater threat if it can find a quarterback
to keep the defense guessing. Senior Bryce
Dickman will get his shot at leading the
team. Although there are no wide receivers listed on the roster, Dickmans ability to
run and find his tight ends and running
backs out of the backfield will be key for
Haslett.

VETERAN LINEUP
After a six-year run of losing seasons, the Bulldogs have
experience on both sides of the ball. The four returning
starters on offense and three on defense took their
lumps last year as sophomores on the varsity, and Ionia
had its best season since 2008. Running back Kyle Parks
and quarterback Austin Gregory earned all-league
first-team and honorable mention, respectively, after
starting all nine games as sophomores.
BULLDOGS IN THE TRENCHES
Both sides of the line should be a strength for Ionia. Left
tackle Jon Klumpp and left guard Eric Spohr are both
three-year starters at their positions, with Klumpp also
starting for three seasons on the D-line.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Coach Mike Holes hopes that improved technique will
lead to more wins this year. Our mistakes last season
simply came down to basic fundamentals, he said.
BACK ON TRACK?
After a string of five straight playoff appearances from
2002-06, Ionia has not had a winning season since. The
Bulldogs should look upon getting back to the postseason as an attainable goal.

NEW FACES
The Redwings have just three returners on offense and even fewer on defense, bringing back
just one player on that side of the ball. A lack of
depth at the skill positions could become an issue
if there are injuries. St. Johns made it all the way
to the Division 3 regional finals last year and came
within one kick of moving on to the semifinals. It
will be up to a mostly new cast of players to step
into leading roles.
THE WORKHORSE
T.J. Havens was both Class A all-area and all-CAAC
Red last year at running back after rushing for
1,038 yards. Hes a smaller runner at just 160
pounds, but will go in between the tackles for the
tough yards while also possessing the speed to
get to the outside. He will obviously be relied on
heavily with how little experience there is to start
the season. Havens did a solid job replacing former standout running back Andrew Mullikin and
it will be interesting to see how he follows up a
breakout season in 2012.
LINE CONCERNS
Havens should be one of the areas better runners
this season if an inexperienced offensive line
holds together. Guard Dan Walsh is the lone
returner up front after an all-conference campaign last season. Its a polar opposite of last year
for the Redwings. They entered the fall returning
three offensive linemen, including center Alex
Dominguez, eventual all-area tackle Josh Rademacher and eventual all-area honorable mention
guard Blake Cooper.
DEFENSIVE SHORTCOMINGS
The Redwings will be small on defense, but coach
Dave Mariage hopes the unit can make up for
that with quickness. Theyve lost all-area defensive linemen Kris Lindquist and members of what
was a good secondary. Four seniors will be looked
upon to step up defensive end Cory Fedewa,
defensive back Mark Bozzo and a pair of linebackers in Kody Stockwell and Cayden DeBois. St.
Johns allowed 18 points per game last season
after giving up more than 25 per game in 2011.
Returning senior running back T.J. Havens, shown here eluding a DeWitt defender,
rushed for 1,038 yards last season. LSJ FILE

CONTEST AT QB
Mason went into preseason practice without
knowing who its starting quarterback would
be. Senior Nathan Jones and sophomore
Jarrett VanHavel both played last year and
shared reps in the first part of this seasons
preparations.
PUTTING THE FOOT IN FOOTBALL
The Bulldogs have depth at the kicking position, quite a luxury at this level. Senior incumbent Josh Flamme, also the starting goalkeeper on Masons soccer team, has been one
of the top kickers in the area for the past three
seasons. But Flamme has a bit of competition
this year in junior lineman Riley Roush. Van
Havel said that Flamme will be the starter, but
that Roush can step right in if Flammes soccer
obligations conflict. Roush also may frequently
handle punting or kickoffs.
SECONDARY A STRENGTH
Masons defensive backfield should be a
strong point with three returning starters
Jones and Hunter Holbrook at safety and
Marshal Hyden at cornerback. Holbrook is a
sophomore who won that job last season as a
freshman.
LIVING UP TO THE NAME
Van Havel said that his players need to be,
well, Bulldogs in order to succeed. We have
great kids, great teammates, quality kids, we
just have to turn them into good football
players, he said. You have to be a little
ornery (to play football), and were not that
ornery yet.

what happened last year.
UP IN THE AIR
The way this season goes could
hinge on the performance of
senior quarterback Grant Renwick. As a junior, he ran for 735
yards, but the team is focused on
throwing more to take advantage
of the mismatches created by
Mikhail Myles. If the Cavaliers can
balance their rushing attack with
a consistent passing game, they
will become very difficult to defend.

What it takes to get there and what

By Dick Hoekstra

COACHING STAFF: We have a veteran coaching staff that had coached a lot
of big games and against good teams,
and we expect that to benefit us when we
get to the playoffs, Zimmerman said.
TRADITION: Last years team benefitted from the success of previous
teams, Zimmerman said. They learned
how to win and expected to win.
Weve been fortunate to have a fair
amount of success, and the kids believe
they will win.
The playoff experience is real important, Novara said. Some junior varsity kids came up and practiced with us
an extra five weeks. That got them going
at our speed, running our plays, running
our system. Some kids got a lot of practice, and that should pay off this fall.
PRACTICE: We work on last two-minute situations in practice, and that helps
to prepare for those kind of games, Zimmerman said.
SPECIAL TEAMS: One point here or
there or blocked punts and kick returns
can make a big difference in a close playoff game, Zimmerman said.
HARD WORK: Obviously, you need to
have kids commit to work hard and buy
into what youre doing and the off-season
conditioning, Novara said.
IMPROVEMENT: We need to improve
each week throughout the season or,

DEFENDING CHAMPS
Portland won last years Division 5 state championship with a 12-9 victory over Grand Rapids
West Catholic at Ford Field, earning the
schools first team state title in any sport. West
Catholic bounced the Raiders out of the playoffs in 2010 on the way to their own state title.
INJURED QB
The Raiders return six starters on offense from
thir state championship team, one fewer than
anticipated. Quarterback Tanner Allison required surgery for an injured shoulder, which
will sideline him for the season. Allison, who
has committed to play baseball at Western
Michigan University, should be back to full
strength for baseball in the spring.
STRENGTH IN THE TRENCHES
Portland is traditionally strong at the line of
scrimmage, and this year will be no exception.
Zach Gustafson (6-foot-6, 215 pounds), Hunter
Scott (6-4, 210) and Jacob Fox (6-0, 190) are
returning starters on the offensive line.
LEAGUE NEMESIS
Portland is undefeated for the past two regular seasons against teams not named Lansing
Catholic. The Cougars handed the Raiders
their only loss last year, and their only two in
2011, including a 50-33 defeat in the Division 5
playoffs. The two teams will square off in
Week 3 this year.

Stockbridge is looking to get a league win to
avoid going 0-10 during its two-year stint in

Greater Lansing Athletic Conference. Other
schools in the league are Lakewood, Leslie,
Perry, Maple Valley and Lansing Christian
which does not field a football team.
QUALITY RETURNERS
Killinger likes his teams unity, work ethic and
speed. Stockbridge returns three starters on
offense and three on defense. Back on offense
are quarterback Kaleb Grammer, wide receiver
Lucas Showerman and 6-foot-2, 225-pound

Williamston Hornets
FOURCAST
SENIOR CITIZENS
The Hornets are a squad that relies
almost exclusively on its senior class.
Outside of quarterback/defensive back
Chaz Moore, most of the teams impact
players are in their final tour of duty.
Thats not a bad thing, as Williamston is
coming off of a 7-4 season and a trip to
the district title game. Coach Steve
Kersten said that experience has made
this one of the tightest teams he has
had.
SECONDARY TO NONE
The strength of this team might be the
duo of Moore and Ryan Watters in the
defensive backfield. The two have
shown the ability to give fits to the
oppositions passing attack and offenses were held to 10 points or less in
five games last season. Both were
all-league selections, and Moore could
be the best defensive player in the
conference.
TWO-WAY STARS
Moore and Watters dont just make
names for themselves on defense. The
two are also expected to rotate at
quarterback in 2013. When Watters
went down with an injury last season,
Moore got a shot to run the offense as
a sophomore and looked impressive.
Expect Kersten to give both players
time under center to keep defenses
guessing throughout games.
HOME SWEET HOME
Although Williamston has to make trips
to Ithaca and Portland, the Hornets will
play just three games on the road all
year. That means some of their biggest
games (Lansing Catholic, Corunna and
Haslett) will come on their own turf. If
Williamston can take advantage of its
favorable home slate, it should be able
to reach the postseason again.

Dansville Aggies
FOURCAST
MEMORABLE SEASON
The Aggies enjoyed one of their most successful football seasons in recent years last fall.
They lost only to CMAC runner-up PewamoWestphalia and champion Fowler in the regular season while compiling a 7-2 record. They
then edged Ottawa Lake Whiteford 21-18 to
earn the schools first ever football playoff
victory. Dansville had lost first-round games in
its only other appearances in the playoffs,
which came in 1980, 1990, 1992 and 2003. The
2003 season was also the last time the Aggies
had even managed a winning record. Their
season record in 2012 wound up at 8-3 after a
32-2 loss to Britton-Deerfield in a Division 7
district final.
NEW LEADERSHIP
Dan Price, who coached Dansville to its most
wins since it compiled a 9-1 record in 1992,
resigned and is serving as an assistant coach
under Jerry VanHavel at Mason this season.
The new coach this fall, Mike Galbreath,
served as an assistant under Price with the
Aggies in recent years.
LINEBACKERS, LINEMEN BACK
Four starters return on offense and four on
defense. Three on offense are linemen
Justin Carone, Lucas Moser and Will Walker
and the other is running back Cody Williams.
On defense, three are linebackers Carone,
Josh Edson and Brad Hunt and the fourth is
Walker, a safety who is considered one of the
best defensive players in the CMAC.
COACHS GOALS
Galbreath likes how the Aggies play together
as a team, and how they play with heart. He
thinks they need to work on their tackling and
playing four quarters. He wants his team to
be proud of the effort they leave on the field.

FOURCAST
A BIT OF REBUILDING
The Eagles are inexperienced and will need
to get game reps. Just two starters return
on defense and three are back on offense.
Fowler lost many of its weapons from
teams that went to the Division 8 state final
in 2011 and finished with an undefeated
regular season and a CMAC championship
in 2012, including Dream Teamer Tyler
Koenigsknecht and six players who earned
Class D all-area honors. Fowler also will
have a new coach this fall as Kris Ernst
takes over for Craig Koenigsknecht. Ernst
was previously the Fowler athletic director
and was an assistant under Koenigsknecht.

Austin Feldpausch (24) looks for an opening as he takes a handoff last season. Feldpausch
is expected to be the primary ball carrier in 2013. LSJ FILE
A BACK IS BACK
One main returner on offense is
fullback Austin Feldpausch. The
240-pound senior was one of the
rushing options last year behind
Tyler Koenigsknecht and Watts
and got a lot of carries simply
because Fowler had put some
games enough out of reach
where younger players could see
the field. He will be the featured
rusher this year and will be relied
on for the bulk of the carries.
Look for sophomore Austin Cook
to get some as well.
NEW UP FRONT
Senior Quinn Myers and
junior Adam Blackwell are
the only two returning
starters on the offensive
line, a unit which has
helped the Eagles overpower opponents the past
few seasons. Ernst also
expects senior Chandler
Chambell to contribute
and there are three other
senior linemen on the
roster that could help fill
the holes.

SIZE A STRENGTH
The Vikings have something that has been lacking in recent seasons,
which will help them compete in the rough-and-tumble CMAC: Size in
the trenches. Junior Clinton Ward (6-2, 270) started all nine games at
left tackle as a sophomore. He also starts on defense, drawing doubleteams at nose tackle. Dominic Ackley (5-11, 245) and Mike Romanek
(6-0, 245) will add bulk and power at the line of scrimmage on both
sides of the ball.
SMASH-MOUTH FOOTBALL
Along with that beefy line, Potterville also has size in their backfield.
Junior Kolin Groom (6-2, 185) was the teams leading rusher as a sophomore, and junior Luke Wood (5-10, 205) will carry the load at fullback.
QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY
Perhaps feeling the effects of three straight losing seasons, the numbers in the Potterville program are suffering. As a result, conditioning
and versatility will be key for success. Most players will play both ways
and need to know more than one position on either side of the ball.
A TOUGH LEAGUE
The Vikings won the CMAC league title in their memorable 10-1 season
in 2009, but have just three league wins since, two of them to schools
no longer in the conference. Barring injury, that should change this
year.

Saranac will have to find a replacement for and move on without quarterback/running back Jacob Coulier (14), who helped the Redskins

FOURCAST
CONFIDENCE BUILDER
The schedule potentially sets up
well for a young team, however,
with three of the first four games
coming against Morrice, Bath and
Potterville. Morrice was 5-31 over
the past four seasons, and Bath
and Potterville had losing seasons
last year. Early success in that
stretch may be a huge lift for the
games that come immediately
after traditional CMAC powers
Fowler, Pewamo-Westphalia,
Fulton and Laingsburg.
STATURE OF LIMITATIONS
The Redskins will have to find
different ways to succeed without
much size. There is not a single
player on the roster whose listed
weight is at 230 pounds or more.
EXPERIENCED BACKFIELD
One area where the Redskins will
have some veteran players is in
the offensive backfield. Running
backs Paul Woodward and Hunter
Videan are both returning starters.
Scott Yoshonis
YOUNG SKINS
Saranac will be extremely young
this season, with just seven players from last years team returning. Sophomore QB Drake Edwards will be backed up by sophomore Alex Cadwallader and
freshman Brett Patrick three of
17 underclassmen on the Redskins varsity roster.

TURNING POINT
Since Brad Long took over in
2007, Morrice has battled through
tough times going 10-44. However, its clearly a team that is steadily building. Its four wins in 2012
were nearly half of the total for
Longs tenure. If Morrice is going
to turn the corner, this will be the
season. The Orioles have seven
starters back on offense and
defense and return a strong
senior class. This is the season the
program has been waiting for.
FAVORABLE SCHEDULE
While coaches will tell you every
game is a tough one, the schedule
broke right for Morrice this season. The Orioles avoid playing
conference rival New Lorthop,
which went 10-1 last season.
Morrice also has its two potentially toughest games Flint Hamady and Byron at home. A favorable schedule guarantees nothing, but Morrice isnt complaining
about how things shaped up.
ON THE LINE
Morrice has 14 starters returning
and most of them will be along
the offensive and defensive lines.
Included are OL/DT Connor
Green, OL Mark Copeland, OL/DE
Hayden Jackson, OL Joe Wesley,
TE/DE Joe Gutting and DE Xavier

should keep the pressure off of

open holes for running back

HOME COOKING
Perry will play six of its nine games at home.
Having the extra support from the crowd will be
necessary, as the team plays an extremely tough
schedule. Four teams from the conference made
the postseason last year, and it will take a lot for
the Ramblers to finish near the top of the league
this year. The teams record after its first five games
(all of which are at home) should determine if the
postseason is a possibility.
BATTLE TESTED
The Ramblers have 14 starters back from 2012. Its a
balanced group, too, as they will have seven
returnees on each side of the ball. A terrific senior
class gives coach Rob Porritt his best team in his
three seasons at Perry. Having so many players
back should help the team build on its respectable
4-5 record from last season.
IN THE TRENCHES
The teams strength will be along the offensive
and defensive lines. The duo of Alex and Cody
Proudfoot will lock down the offensive guard and
defensive tackle positions. Meanwhile, returning
tackle Jebidiah Spencer might have been the
teams best offensive lineman by the end of the
2012 season. With those three on the line, Perry
should have time to pass and to find room for the
running game.
HART AND SOUL
No player is more important to Perrys success than
senior Dakota Hart. The quarterback threw for
1,000 yards and rushed for 315 in 2012. This season
hell also be playing outside linebacker on defense,
where he projects as the teams best player on that
side of the ball. Hes the guy to keep an eye on to
make big plays for the Ramblers.

ON THE LINE
Ovid-Elsie returns three offensive linemen and
three defensive linemen to the varsity this
season and depth at interior line will be a
strength. Senior Skyler Cramer played guard
last season but will move to center. Senior
tackle Eric Smith and senior guard Zach Swartz
are both in their third years on the varsity.
Defensively, Cramer will move down to defensive tackle after playing linebacker last year,
with Smith and senior Luke Alexander handling the defensive end spots. This will help
O-E be more physical at the point of attack.
A LOT OF LUCKHURST
Its always a positive sign for an offense when
the leading rusher from the previous season
returns and O-E has that benefit this season.
Junior fullback Chris Luckhurst will hope to
build off of a successful sophomore campaign
and is now up to 205 pounds, making him a
punishing back when running between the
tackles.
OFFENSE NEEDED
The Marauders managed just 13.4 points per
game last season and scored less than 10 points
in four of their nine games. Theyll need to be
better at finishing drives, having come up
empty in the red zone several times last season.
Outside of Luckhurst, most of the skill position
players will be inexperienced, but Long feels
the group will be solid. Junior Ken Ordway and
sophomore Devon Kelley will be the running
backs opposite Luckhurst, and sophomore
Keaghan Sutliff will be the quarterback.
ALEXANDER THE GREAT
One of the five returning players on offense
for the Marauders is senior tight end Alexander, who Long says has great size and awareness. He can be a solid receiving option for the
offense and his 230-pound frame will give O-E
an extra blocker up front on rushing plays.
Other than 265-pound junior Richard Olger,
Alexander will be the largest body O-E can put
up front.

LOW NUMBERS
Ithaca returns just four starters on offense and
three on defense. A small junior class has
forced coach Terry Hessbrook to bring up a
number of sophomores to the varsity. However, the last three seasons the Yellowjackets
have made a living out of filling in holes with
kids who have been waiting for their chance
to contribute. Smith taking the reins from
former Ithaca and current Central Michigan
quarterback Alex Niznak is just one of many
examples.
TWO-WAY STANDOUT
Senior Logan Hessbrook showed just how
valuable he was when Smith was injured in
last years Division 6 state final against Constantine. Without missing a beat, Hessbrook
stepped in at quarterback and led the team to
the title. The first team all-TVC West selection
from last year will remain in the offense as a
back with Smith back at quarterback, but hes
also an imposing defensive back at 6-3, 200
pounds. Hessbrook will lead a relatively inexperienced defense with linebackers Rickey
King and Seth Capen.

Olivet will have a bit of an advantage in its

have just four home games, three of them will
be against the three teams Schoolcraft,
Battle Creek Pennfield and Constantine that
finished ahead of them in the KVA last year.
None of the five teams that they will face on

Peacock feels his team may need
some time to understand and
execute a new offensive scheme.
However, the first three games
should offer a good opportunity
to accomplish some of that. The
Bears face North Adams-Jerome,
Crossroads Christian and Traverse
City Christian, and while two of
those games will be on the road,
Ashley beat the three opponents
by a combined score of 104-6 last
season.
DEFENSIVE IMPROVEMENTS
Ashley gave up 357 points in nine
games during the 2011 season, the
most they had allowed as a unit
since 1995. They rebounded last
year, allowing a little less than 28
points per game and 251 for the
season. The Bears will return their
entire front line, two linebackers
and four defensive backs, so the
defense should be positioned to
make continued progress. Bradley
and junior Domingo Gutierrez,
who also is the teams quarterback,
anchor the secondary.
NEW LEADER
Fred Peacock moved over to
Ashley after coaching Big Rapids
Crossroads in 2012. The Bears
defeated Peacocks former team
48-0 when the two played last
season and they will play again on
Sept. 6. Peacock has 15 years of

moving on to Big Rapids Crossroads. This will be the third coach

SHAMROCKS ON THE GO
St. Patrick will begin ts second
year of 8-player football with an
epic road trip to Engadine in the
Upper Peninsula in the season
opener. Mapquest pegs the
round trip at 573 miles. Happily
for the Shamrocks and their
travel budget, other far-flung
opponents St. Joseph Michigan
Lutheran and Carsonville-Port
Sanilac will be home games.
SCHEDULE
LAST YEAR
LESS IS MORE
The Shamrocks first year of
8-player football was a rousing
success. The team went 11-1,
losing only in the state semifinals,
and outscoring its opponents by
an average of 54-21 in the regular
season. Those 11 wins were more
than the program had in the
previous four years combined
playing the 11-player game.
BUDDING RIVALRY
Battle Creek St. Philip also took
part in 8-player football for the
first time last season, and the
Fighting Tigers were defeated by
St. Patrick three times, including a
wild 34-28 contest in the regional
finals. The two teams square off
just once this season, barring a
playoff matchup, in the league
finale in Week 8.

SPEED KILLS
One of the signature features of 8-player football
is the open-field play that benefits quicker players. Speed is perhaps Webbervilles biggest
strength, which should be a reason to get excited
about this squads potential. Keep an eye on
Malik Turner, Kyle Oesterle and Jimmy Albin. All
have starting experience and all will see time as
receivers.
BALANCED ATTACK
Emmons is stressing to his players that he wants
to be able to make plays in the air and on the
ground. Travis Elowsky, a strong-armed quarterback, will be responsible for getting the ball to
the teams talented receivers. Meanwhile, it will
be up to senior running back Jack Haite to move
the chains on the ground, although Emmons
believes the development of the run game might
take a little longer.

A NEW FRONTIER
After having to cancel its season in 2012, the
Webberville football program comes back as an
8-player team. Guiding the transition will be
first-time head coach Joel Emmons, who played
at Williamston. The sports wide-open style of
play has interest up at the school, as it prepares
for its first season of a two-year commitment with
8-player. The new era opens at home Thursday.
YOUTH OVER EXPERIENCE
With the team ending its season early last year,
one of the biggest challenges will be getting
players used to playing a full schedule again. Its a
young and inexperienced team, too, as just three
starters are back from last season. The youth is a
good thing, though, as a shortage of players was
why the program cancelled its season last year. If
these young players can develop quickly, Webberville could be a factor right away.
