Saints looking to return to elite status

By ALAIN POUPART @apoupartFins The start of a new year is an exciting time for every NFL team, but there probably wasnt a group around the league as thrilled about starting over in 2013 as the New Orleans Saints. Now that Sean Payton is back as head coach after his one-year suspension, now that the whole Bountygate affair is behind them, the Saints are ready to return to their status as one of the elite teams in the league. Why would they expect anything less? Before the nightmare that was the 2012 season, when the Payton-less Saints got off to an 0-4 start and could never quite get over the hump on their way to a 7-9 finish, New Orleans had become a perennial Super Bowl threat. The Saints followed their 2009 Super Bowl season by going 11-5 in 2010 and 13-3 the following year, and all the key elements from those teams starting with quarterback Drew Brees are still around. The top five receivers are back from the pass offense that led the league in 2012 when Brees passed for more than 5,000 yards for the third time in his career. To give you an idea how impressive that is, just consider that until 2008 only one quarterback in the entire history of the NFL had been able to reach that plateau Dolphins fans obviously know that was Dan Marino in 1984. With Brees looking as sharp as ever early in the 2013 preseason, theres little reason to think the Saints offense wont be among the best in the NFL again this season. In Marques Colston and Lance Moore, Brees has two quality wide receivers, but he also has one of the premier receiving tight ends in the league in former University of Miami basketball player Jimmy Graham and a dynamic pass-catching running back in the diminutive but explosive Darren Sproles. The big question for the Saints and the key to their ability to retake the NFC South crown away from the Atlanta Falcons will be the defense.

Head coach Sean Payton is back in charge of the Saints, leading a team that features one of the best receiving tight ends in the NFL in former University of Miami basketball player Jimmy Graham (80).

Put simply, the Saints just couldnt stop anybody in 2012. New Orleans was last in the league in total defense and run defense, and only Tampa Bay was worse when it comes to pass defense. Taking over as defensive coordinator this year is Rob Ryan, who has brought with him his pressure-based 3-4 scheme. Ryan, though, will need for some of the Saints recent high draft picks on defense to come through to make his system work. The latest of those high picks is safety Kenny Vaccaro, the 15th overall selection in the 2013 draft. Before him, the Saints also spent firstround picks on defensive end Cameron Jordan in 2011, cornerback Patrick Robinson in 2010, defensive back Malcolm Jenkins in 2009 and defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis in 2008. All of them remain on the roster except Ellis, who recently announced his retirement after signing with the Chicago Bears as a free agent this offseason. The Saints also have high hopes for free agent acquisition Keenan Lewis, who is expected to start at cornerback after a breakthrough season in Pittsburgh in 2012.

As good as the Saints offense figures to be, the defense doesnt have to be spectacular it wasnt in 2009 when the Saints won the Super Bowl. But that 2009 defense was just good enough and it also was opportunistic. However it plays out, though, the Saints figure to bounce back from last seasons disappointment. And no matter how far they can get, they figure to be fun to watch again.

The Saints Run Offense

The New Orleans run game directly benefits from the vertical stretch that quarterback Drew Brees applies in the passing game. Its a running back by committee for the Saints featuring Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram. Thomas is the do-everything type of running back; he has led the Saints in rushing twice in his seven year-career, while Ingram carries the load between the tackles and is tough to bring down because of his running style. Usually the run defense starts in the middle with veteran linebacker Jonathan Vilma, but a knee injury has pushed his 2013 debut to the opening day of the regular season. Fellow inside backer Curtis Lofton is more than capable of continuing his stellar play after he led the Saints in total tackles last season (123). He should get plenty of help with sturdy nose tackle Brodrick Bunkley holding down the defensive front.

The Saints Run Defense

The Saints Pass Offense

Quarterback Drew Brees is the first NFL quarterback to pass for 5,000 yards in back-to-back seasons and he should benefit from having Head Coach Sean Payton back on the sidelines calling plays. Brees has led the league in touchdowns four of the past five seasons and having a dominant tight end like Jimmy Graham helps control the middle of the field, opening up the outside for quality players such as Marques Colston and Lance Moore. The New Orleans defense should bring more pressure on opposing quarterbacks with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan calling the shots. Ryan likes to use exotic looks and players like defensive end Cameron Jordan should benefit immediately. Also look for the Saints to get more of a push from the linebackers, like Will Smith, a player who knows how to press the pocket. This should result in more chances for the secondary to get their hands on the football.

The Saints Pass Defense

The Saints Special Teams

It all starts with the dynamic Darren Sproles for the Saints on special teams. Sproles is as dangerous as it gets in the NFL as a returner; he has five total career touchdowns on punt and kickoff returns. New Orleans placekicker Garrett Hartley has had a solid performance this preseason, especially his 4-for-4 outing against the Oakland Raiders when he made kicks from 53, 31, 30 and 28 yards out. Thomas Morstead will handle the punting and is more than capable with a 47.1 career average and a personal best 50.1 average in 2012.

Tonights game will mark the sixth consecutive time the teams preseason meeting is the finale, but it will be the first of those games played in South Florida. The Dolphins have won four of those last five preseason finales against New Orleans, with victories in 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2009 sandwiched around a 7-0 loss in 2007.

SAINTS EDITION

In the 14-10 victory at the Superdome in the 2008 preseason finale, the Dolphins held New Orleans to a measly 99 yards of offense, thanks in part to four sacks, including one by current Miami defensive tackle Randy Starks.

In the Dolphins 20-19 victory in the preseason finale at New Orleans in 2004, the Saints scored a touchdown with 1:51 left and failed on a two-point conversion instead of kicking an extra point. DE Ronald Flemons then clinched the victory with a fourth-down sack.

The teams preseason meeting on Aug. 27, 1992 was moved to Baltimore because of Hurricane Andrew.

In the Dolphins 24-10 victory in 2003, they scored 17 points in the last 2:36 of the first half. A field goal was set up by a fumble that was forced by Brendon Ayanbadejo and recovered by his brother Obafemi, who earlier had scored on a 1-yard TD reception.

STORY LINES
The Dolphins defense was the biggest factor in the victory that closed out the 2009 preseason, as Miami recorded eight sacks and held New Orleans out of the end zone the Saints only touchdown came on a fourth-quarter punt return. Running back Patrick Cobbs was the offensive star for the Dolphins as he not only rushed for a game-high 54 yards and a touchdown but also caught three passes. Cobbs also clinched the victory by converting a third-and-1 to allow the Dolphins to run out the clock after they had stopped New Orleans on fourth down. The victim of all eight Miami sacks was Joey Harrington, the veteran quarterback who had spent the 2006 season with the Dolphins.

HEAD COACHS CORNER | GETTING TO KNOW | COACHING STAFF | FOOTBALL OPERATIONS | 2013 MIAMI DOLPHINS

Head Coach Joe Philbin tackles a variety of subjects, including defensive end Olivier Vernons progress, the importance of eliminating penalties, and his comfort level with the teams depth at the safety position

Q. How has Olivier Vernon performed during the preseason?

JP: Hes demonstrated the ability here throughout practice to consistently get pressure on the quarterback. I think hes had a very productive camp. Now the proof will be when he continues to play in games.

Q. How do you know when a player is ready for an increased role?

JP: Youre never really quite sure until you throw them in there. When hes done enough good things out here, be it in a one-on-one setting, a half-line setting or a team situation. That gives you confidence as a coach that when you put him out there under the lights, so to speak, that he will be ready and prepared. I think hes demonstrated basically all you can do here; now its time to do it out there.

Q. How would you evaluate rookie tight end Dion Sims hands?
JP: He has good hands, very good hands. He catches the ball with his hands. One thing you guys probably noticed with what we do, hes not a body catcher. He uses his hands to pluck the ball, which we like. Hes had a couple ones that were questionable. Hes got to do a better job in the games, but Im confident with his hands. He has very good hands.

Q. How important is limiting penalties to your success as a football team?

See PHILBIN, page 28

Defensive end Olivier Vernon has made big strides since his rookie season, and the Dolphins are anxious to see how his progress translates to the regular season.

DOLPHINS VS. SAINTS 27

PHILBIN, from page 27

JP: We have to do a better job. We want to be a team that has four penalties a game; (that) would be our goal. That would put you potentially at the top of the list in the league. Thats certainly the way we want to play. We want to be a disciplined football team. We certainly dont want to go backward. Weve got to do a better job.

Q. What are Brandon Fields' skills as an onside kick specialist?

JP: Hes got a good knack for placement, the timing of it, the location of it. Hes going to handle that at this point in time. Hes been working at it.

Q. Has has Jonathan Martin improved at left tackle during the preseason?
JP: I think hes been quietly improving. Thats probably a good thing for an offensive lineman. You dont want to be noticed too much as an offensive lineman. I think the timing on his punch is getting better, his footwork is getting better. Hes working hard at it and hes very detailed with his preparation. I like the strides hes making, but he certainly has more to make. JP: I thought he displayed good mental toughness the first start he had in Houston back in September of last year. He knew what went wrong and he didnt panic. He came out and played better in the second half after certainly a rough patch there of four or five minutes. I think hes displayed good mental toughness, really, since the start. anybody can really distinguish themselves by their performance. I think there are guys there to work with. I like them. I think theyve worked hard. Theyve shown some flashes during the course of training camp, but Id like to see them put a game of good performance on film. Jonathan Martin has gone fairly unnoticed for much of the preseason, and thats a good thing when you happen to be an offensive lineman.

Q. What is the decision process between carrying two or three quarterbacks on the roster?
JP: Ive been on both sides of it. Its something that well have to consider. Hopefully we have a lot of tough decisions to make before we finalize the roster. Certainly there are teams in the National Football League that only carry two and there are some that carry three. That will be one of those decisions that well have to address and were going to have to consider a lot of different factors.

Q. What do you see in the play of Dimitri Patterson?

JP: I think hes played well. I like his quickness. I like his athleticism. Hes very decisive out there, and hes been competitive. I think hes done a good job.

Q. Are there plays the team would run only in two-point situations or also utilize on goal-line situations?
JP: Yes and yes. Theres some we have we would like to save and use only in a two-point critical situation where we really need it. There are plays we could both utilize in the red-zone, goal-line, third-and-2, possibly fourth-and-two. You could grab one of the two-point plays and use them there.

Q. How has Ryan Tannehill displayed the mental toughness it takes to be a quarterback in the NFL?

Q. How comfortable are you with the depth at safety?

JP: I like the upside of all of those guys. Id like to see them perform in games and see if

OFFENSIVE LINE

Whats something youve learned about one of your players this summer?
Ive learned that Jonathan Martin gets very excited at Miami Heat games. He really likes to be involved with the crowd, too.

Whats your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about this job is lunch. Joe Philbin does a great job with the lunches, honest to God. The food here is incredible. I come into work at 7 in the morning. I eat a breakfast, a lunch and dinner. I eat great. I also like trying to put a group together for the purpose of winning football games. I like to watch that thing mature and develop, and hopefully have success this year.

What were your favorite sports team and player growing up?
My favorite team growing up was actually an NBA team, the Boston Celtics. I loved Larry Bird and the Celtics.

Which coach has had the biggest influence on your career?

Honestly, my mom was the biggest influence on me. She was like a coach because there were eight kids in the house growing up, so every day was almost like a football practice.

I like trying to put a group together for the purpose of winning football games. I like to watch that thing mature and develop, and hopefully have success this year.

Entering his second season as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, Joe Philbin led the team to a 7-9 record and a second-place finish in the AFC East in 2012. Working with one of the youngest rosters in the NFL, Philbin had the Dolphins in playoff contention until the penultimate week of the season while improving the teams record from the previous year. Philbin was named the 10th head coach in Miami Dolphins history on January 20, 2012. As a measure of the respect Philbin earned in his first year as the teams head coach, he was named to the Coaches Subcommittee of the NFL Competition Committee by Commissioner Roger Goodell on April 15, 2013. He also was chosen by the league to make a presentation at the NFLs Career Development Symposium at the Wharton School of Business this past May. Prior to joining the Dolphins, Philbin served as the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator from 2007-11. He originally joined the Packers on Feb. 10, 2003 as assistant offensive line coach. He was elevated to tight ends/assistant offensive line coach on Feb. 27, 2004. Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy promoted Philbin to offensive line coach on Jan. 17, 2006, and then to offensive coordinator on Jan. 15, 2007. Born in Springfield, Mass., Philbin is a 1984 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.), where he played tight end (1980). He also possesses a masters degree in education from Tulane University (1986). He is married to Diane, and the couple has five children Matthew, John, Kevin, Tim, Colleen and a deceased son, Michael.

Jeff Ireland was named the Dolphins General Manager on Jan. 2, 2008, and is now in his sixth season in that position with the team. He joined the club after a seven-year stint (2001-07) with the Dallas Cowboys, including his last three seasons there as the teams vice president of college and pro scouting. In his role with the Dolphins, Ireland is not only responsible for overseeing and coordinating the college and pro personnel departments, but also helps manage the teams salary cap and player contracts. He supervises all scouting efforts that relate to the college draft, free agency, the Canadian Football League, and personnel of the other 31 NFL teams. Ireland works hand-in-hand with Head Coach Joe Philbin in implementing a personnel plan to build the Dolphins into a championship-caliber team. In Irelands five seasons in Miami, he has built a nucleus of talented young players that have the Dolphins positioned for longterm success. He developed a plan that would give the team the flexibility and the capability to bring talented newcomers to the team heading into the 2013 season, and carried out that plan by using all the tools at his disposal. Jeff and his wife, Rachel, have three daughters, Annie and twins Haley and Hannah, and a son, Riley. The Irelands, working closely with the Dolphins and the Dan Marino Foundation, have helped spearhead WalkAbout Autism, an annual event at Sun Life Stadium which has raised more than a million dollars over the past three years. The Irelands also have co-chaired the Autumn Moonlight Event each October since 2008 to help raise awareness and money to benefit the Nova Southeastern University/University of Miami Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD).

Sixteen. Thats the number that hovers deep inside Joe Philbins mind like an unwanted visitor. Its not a number to be proud of, certainly not when you are talking about the total takeaways for a defense in a full NFL season. Indeed, there is nothing sweet about this 16, tied for fourth-worst in the league a season ago. But the more telling number might just be 17. Thats how many potential interceptions the Dolphins defense dropped last season. Think about that. Seventeen times the ball was in a defenders hands and he couldnt make the play. Seventeen times, for crying out loud! We catch those, said defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo, and we would have led the NFL. When the quarterback throws the ball to a defensive player, we have to catch it, no ifs, ands or buts. It is that paltry number of takeaways combined with that hard-to-fathom number of drops that led to some significant defensive changes heading into this season. Status quo wasnt working. Upgrades were necessary. The defense was good, just not good enough. So the changes kept coming. Two young, fast linebackers in Dannell Elerbe and Philip Wheeler. A ball-hawking free agent cornerback in Brent Grimes. A big play waiting to happen in No. 3 overall pick Dion Jordan. And two young cornerbacks, both with resumes filled with takeaways, grabbed in the second and third rounds. Putting together the pieces of this newlook defense, and emphasizing takeaways, has everything to do with what this training camp was all about. It is why when you walk into a defensive meeting room, there is a football mounted on springs suspended from the wall. As each player walks by, he swipes at that football. Its all about creating a mind-set, Anarumo said. Strip the ball. Strip it again. Cornerbacks Will Davis (opposite page) and Nolan Carroll both came up with interceptions in the preseason victory at Jacksonville.

His timing on ball skills and the adjustments he makes in the air is as good as I have seen in my 23 years of coaching.
DB COACH LOU ANARUMO ON BRENT GRIMES (right)

Its becoming more of a habit for us. We want to make it like tying your shoes. Dont think about it; just do it. There are drills every day at practice. There are discussions in the meeting rooms. Lessons are learned by watching tape. But teaching and practicing and swiping footballs in the meeting rooms are one thing; doing it when the score really counts is the real objective. The offenses are too good nowadays to allow them to go an entire game without even taking the ball away once, Anarumo said. We are focusing on it. We want our players to be obsessed about it. Some of it is lousy luck. There was a play last year in Buffalo. Safety Rashad Jones leveled the ball carrier; the ball popped loose. Defensive back Jimmy Wilson was the only upright player who had a chance to recover. It could have been returned to the house.

But there is an offensive lineman laying on the ground, Anarumo said. He happens to roll over on the ball just before Jimmy gets there. Plays like that are tough to take. Opponents fumbled the ball 23 times last season; the Dolphins recovered six. You just have to make a play when a play comes your way, said Ellerbe. Of all the newcomers on this defense, I believe Grimes will have the biggest impact on takeaways. Not only has he done it in the past, but he shown the Dolphins that, despite a lack of height, he has the physical tools and mind-set to be a disruptive force. You want to hear some powerful words about Grimes, listen to his defensive backs coach. His timing on ball skills, said Anarumo, and the adjustments he makes in the air is as good as I have seen in my 23 years of coaching. Nobody at least publicly is offering

specifics about the goal this season for takeaways. Suffice it to say it isnt anywhere near 16. Im going to suggest that 25 is a worthy number to shoot for. Philbin would just like to win the turnover battle every game. Ill take my chances with that, he said. So the five-game preseason schedule concludes tonight and there are all sorts of indicators the Dolphins keep looking for. Big plays on offense. A consistent running game. Coming up with a starting five on the offensive line. All very important. All will have a lot to do with the won-loss record of this team. But nothing is more paramount than creating takeaways. Nothing will define this defense more. Nothing, each day of training camp, was stressed with more conviction and redundancy. Sixteen? The Dolphins are sick and tired of that number. And you really get the feeling they are ready to do something about it.

MISI A MAINSTAY
Koa Misi hasnt changed much since he first joined the Dolphins a little more than four years ago. Hes still low-key both on and off the field, soft-spoken and non-controversial when giving interviews and quiet but efficient when hes in the middle of the action.

We really looked at Koa Misi in that regard, and Koa was a very physical, downhill player. We really wanted to emulate a lot of what Koa was doing.
GM JEFF IRELAND ON WHAT LED HIM TO SIGN LINEBACKERS DANNELL ELLERBE AND PHILIP WHEELER

Hes one of those guys whos easy to take for granted, actually, because theres nothing really flashy about him and he quietly goes about his business. Just dont think hes underappreciated around the Doctors Hospital Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University. All anyone needed to know about what the Dolphins think of him could be found in Jeff Irelands words when he gave an interview to CBS4s Kim Bokamper prior to the preseason game at the Houston Texans. Ireland was asked why it was he wanted linebackers Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler in free agency. Really, the thought was that we needed to get faster and more explosive and more

physical at the point of attack, Ireland began before throwing Misi into the mix. And we really looked a lot at Koa Misi in that regard, and Koa was a very physical, downhill player. We really wanted to emulate a lot of what Koa was doing, so during the free agency process we felt like we identified Ellerbe, we identified Wheeler, theyre two guys that get their hands on a lot of balls, they play on all three downs, theyre physical and they can run. Just made good sense to us. As if on cue, Misi made a great play against the Texans, a typical Misi effort in that it was effective yet didnt show up on the stat sheet. On Houstons third possession of the game, Matt Schaub rolled to his left and threw deep to his right hoping to take advantage of Garrett Graham going one-on-one with Misi. But Misi forced an incompletion with blanket coverage, the kind of coverage thats difficult to surpass without drawing a pass-interference penalty. Clearly, there was a reason the Dolphins kept Misi when they revamped their linebacking corps in the offseason. As the Dolphins head into their final preseason game, Misi is the only starting linebacker left from last season. Part of his training camp, then, was about building some chemistry with Ellerbe and Wheeler. Its been good so far, Misi said. Dannell and Wheeler, theyre both good linebackers and they picked up the defense quick. Its been fun playing with them so far. The season is going to be good for us. Its a lot different than it was last year. These guys are picking up the defense quick, theyre moving. Wheeler is making a lot of plays on

the ball. Dannell is real smart playing that Mike (middle) linebacker position. A second-round pick in the 2010 draft, Misi has been a starter pretty much throughout his NFL career, with 12 starts as a rookie, nine in 2011 when injuries limited him to nine games, and 14 last season. Misi hasnt put up big defensive numbers for the Dolphins, but part of that can be attributed to the roles hes been asked to play. Misi does a little bit of everything at linebacker for the Dolphins and he even has lined up with his hand on the ground as a defensive end in obvious passing situations. Ive always played both, D-end and linebacker, Misi said. I did the same last year. Its always nice to get in there and play on third downs, too. Play the run at end and be able to play linebacker as well. I dont really have a choice where I want to play. Ive just got to know both and be ready for when they need to put me in. When the Dolphins switched to a predominantly 4-3 scheme last season with the arrival of a new coaching staff, defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle pointed out Misi as the one player on defense with the toughest adjustment to make from the previous 3-4 system. Misi responded to the challenge in fine fashion, putting together his best season in a Dolphins uniform. Misi finished 2012 with a career-high 60 tackles, a career-high four passes defensed, 3.5 sacks and one forced fumble. With a year of experience in Coyles system, Misi is hoping to be even more effective this season. Right now Im way ahead of where I was last year, just being able to feel comfortable in the defense, not think about things and just be able to go with the play and just move, Misi said. Last year I was thinking too much and making mistakes. This year I feel a lot more comfortable in the position that Im playing. I just feel that Im able to move around a lot better. There are high hopes for the Dolphins defense in 2013, and the reason is the presence of several high-profile players, such as Cameron Wake, Paul Soliai, Brent Grimes and Reshad Jones. Misi most definitely isnt high profile. But the Dolphins most definitely should be able to continue counting on him to produce in his own efficient, understated way. What Ive always been trying to do myself is come out, play hard, never give up on anything, Misi said. My whole life Ive always pushed myself, pushed myself to win, never to get beat or lose a battle. Thats something that I take to heart is do my best and playing my hardest, and hopefully the coaches see that.

Members of the Miami Dolphins Womens Organization (MDWO) shopped with 20 girls in need from Miami-Dade County for backto-school clothes. Each student had $300 to spend courtesy of the Miami Dolphins Foundation and Sears. The children participating were from Paul Laurence Dunbar K-8 in Miami-Dade and all the girls chosen all had a B average or higher. Just as we get back to football, we are kicking off our community events for the season with one of our back-to-school events, said Diane Philbin. Its nice to reward the kids for their hard work and good grades. As the girls kick off their first day of school, they will have new school clothes, backpacks and shoes. Hopefully, this will lead to increased self-confidence and determination to do well in school all year.

Finsider and former Dolphins linebacker Twan Russell shares his cutdown day experience with Brian Coyle in this installment of Finsiders Focus. My cutdown day experience was pretty typical for most firstyear players. My rookie year with the Washington Redskins, I was a fifth-round draft pick, and they had brought in 12 draft picks. So I had no idea which direction they were going to go. Were they trying to go young? Or were we just camp bodies? I remember a couple days before cutdowns; the anxiety was palpable. Im playing, giving everything I have and I have no control whether or not they want me on this team. I was very anxious, but I realized that the key was just channeling that energy into the things that you can control. I can control being on time, I can control studying the playbook, I can control playing hard, and I can control making every play I can. I cant control whether or not I fit on their team. My hopes were that they would look at my effort, what I

brought to the table, and the fact I could play all the positions they needed me to. It was a very anxious time, especially for a young guy like me at the time. But after my rookie year, my attitude changed. It got to a point where I said, You know what, Im playing football, if not for this team, then somebody else. It wasnt a stressful scenario for me anymore. It wasnt something I spent a lot of time thinking about. For

me, all I focused on was doing what I have to do, and if I deserved to be on the team, I would be there. It wasnt an important conversation because if Im doing what Im supposed to be doing, Im going be on the roster. Honestly, you pretty much know when youre going to be cut. You know where you fall 90 percent of the time. Of course, there were guys that did get very worried and straight avoided the man doing the cuts The Grim Reaper, so to speak. The Grim Reaper kept everybody nervous. He could be walking to the bathroom, and everybody started ducking and stopped talking, and looking away because guys didnt want to be near him. And then he would say, Im just walking through the locker room, guys. Chill out. (Head of Security) Stu Weinstein was the Grim Reaper when I was here. Nobody knew Stu during training camp. He came knocking at your door and you would jump, but he was just doing bedroom checks. So people were just trying to avoid the whole situation. And that situation really hasnt changed. Getting cut is still a brutal but necessary part of the game, and heres my advice for the guys that used to be in my position. Focus on the things you can control. Study as much as you can, play as hard as you can. If you can walk into a film room and know that you did not take a play off, you did all your assignments right, you made every play you were supposed to make, and youre not on the team, you can walk out with your head high knowing that you let it all out on the field. If youre one of those guys who thinks you could have done more, shame on you. Youve got to take care of your business, and the rest will fall into place.

A perfect day for a perfect team

By ANDY COHEN @ACohenFins

Nobody can argue with your record. And nobody can argue with what you have gone on to do.
PRESIDENT OBAMA TO MEMBERS OF THE 1972 DOLPHINS

(Andy Cohen In The Morning appears on dolphins.com every Monday through Friday until the end of the season, except for the bye week. The column will be posted each day at 6 a.m. Be sure to follow Andy Cohen on Twitter at @ACohenFins)
WASHINGTON D.C. It was the look on their faces that said everything. The smiles. The pride. The gleam in their eyes. The same kind of look that they most undoubtedly had 41 years earlier when they reached out and

grabbed perfection. For a bunch of 60- and 70-somethings, they sure looked like kids again. It all unfolded as President Barack Obama stood at the podium at exactly 2:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20 and introduced the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Men of accomplishment, Obama called them. Men of character. Men whose day in the national spotlight

was long overdue. But this was their moment. Their time. The room was filled with many Dolphins fans. One even shouted out to the President, Next year you can honor the 73 Dolphins. Next year took 41 years for the perfect team. But it was worth it. So worth it. You could hear it in their voices, see it in their smiles. When Don Shula stood up from his motorized scooter to pose with President Obama with an autographed number 72 jersey, the moment said so much. No way Shula would sit down for this. He needed to stand tall just as the 72 Dolphins had done 17 times during that unforgettable season. When the President brought up the 1985 Chicago Bears, his Chicago Bears, it was Shula who reminded him, We put a whooping on those guys. Ive seen Don Shula in a lot of different situations since he retired. I was at his 80th birthday party. Ive seen him reminisce with former players. Ive seen him laugh. But Ive never quite seen the look he had on Tuesday afternoon. It was, so aptly, The Perfect Look. One of my great thrills, Shula whispered afterward. I was fortunate enough to be there for it all, to spend these two days with these 30 players and two coaches as part of their official travel party. I saw the mutual respect. I saw the camaraderie. Yes, I even saw the love. Tuesday was the capper. Let me try to bring you behind the scenes. 10:45 a.m.: The bus pulls up to the White House. Dogs are brought in to search the bus for something illegal. For the next 30 minutes, there are four security checkpoints. Keep your drivers license out, someone said. The players dont seem to mind. This is what they came for; this is what they wanted. 11:30 a.m.: We get a tour of the East Wing of the White House. Players are posing in front of pictures of everyone from Abraham Lincoln to Bill Clinton. We like to call this public housing with an attitude, said one of the tour guides. Cookies and sodas are served to the group. Dick Anderson organizes group pictures based on the year the player joined the Dolphins. OK, Anderson said, everyone from 1969 get up there. Shula is looking at all the pictures, all the memories of past presidents. Never been here before, he said. Unbelievable place. Time begins to move slowly. The White House wanted everyone ready long before the President was to arrive. The press conference was in the East Room. The players had two different dress rehearsals just to make sure they were standing in the right It was a trip a long time in the making, but members of the 1972 Dolphins team all will fondly remember their visit to the White House to be recognized by President Barack Obama.

place on the big podium behind the President. 1:25 p.m.: President Obama has a brief meet-and-greet with the players and coaches. He says hello to each one. At one point, Garo Yepremian gets his hand on a football. Just as he had done in the Super Bowl so many years before, Garo throws a pass. This one he blindly flipped over his shoulder and somehow President Obama makes the catch. It was a great pass, Garo said. Sure, Garo. 1:50 p.m.: The East Room fills up in a hurry. The mayor of Miami is there. A few soldiers from South Florida walk in. By 2 p.m., when the Perfect Team is announced, the room is packed. Television cameras line the back of the room. For a brief moment, a few of the fans start whispering the words of the Dolphins fight song. Miamis got the Dolphins As quickly as it started, it stopped. After all, this was no time for singing.

2:05 p.m.: The room goes quiet; the President is introduced. And for the next 20 or so minutes, it was special. They never had their White House visit after Super Bowl VII, Obama said to the group. But why now? I wanted to be the young guy in the room for a change. Everyone laughed. President Obama looked around him. There was Csonka and Warfield and Griese and Buoniconti and all those players who contributed so much to this team. Nobody can argue with your record, Obama said to them. And nobody can argue with what you have gone on to do. And then President Obama started rattling off the impressive post-football accomplishments of these 72 Dolphins. They were leaders then; they are leaders now. How proud they were. Their first time back on the national stage, their first time getting saluted by the leader of the free world.

And then, as quickly as it began, it was over. A once-in-a-lifetime experience, said linebacker Mike Kolen. 3 p.m.: The players are walking back to their buses, parked near the gate of the White House. There are about 20 fans standing there with signs. A few of them start to chant: Long overdue. The players walked over to sign autographs. Classy stuff. And then, I sought out Marv Fleming. It was Fleming, you may recall, who organized this, who pushed for it for so long, who was relentless in his efforts until the deed was done. Marv, I asked him, was it everything you had hoped? Fleming slowly pointed to his eyes and ran an imaginary tear down his cheek. I cried, he whispered. And that, in two words, really said everything you needed to know.

DANNELL ELLERBE
Who is the toughest offensive lineman youve faced?
Ellerbe: Id have to say Bobbie Williams when he was with the Bengals. He got a hold of me one time and I couldnt get away from him.

Who sets the bar at your position?

Ellerbe: Im really not trying to emulate anybody. Of course I learned a lot of great things from Ray Lewis, though. Im trying to put my own spin on the linebacker position.

What defensive lineman did you admire growing up?

Ellerbe: I looked up to a lot of different players and not just say linebackers. I started playing linebacker when I got to high school. I was playing safety and running back before that. But I looked up to guys like Ray Lewis, Derrick Brooks, Charles Woodson and Brian Dawkins.

What has been the most memorable moment of your career?

Ellerbe: Thats easy. Winning the Super Bowl is my most memorable moment. Plus, leading the team in tackles during that game was very memorable.

What do you do in the offseason to stay occupied?

Ellerbe: I really dont have anything in particular. I just chill out and go with what the day brings.

Who was the toughest offensive lineman you faced?

Duhe: I would say John Hannah of the Patriots because he was just a brute. He was a very powerful, strong individual, sort of in the mold of Richie Incognito. He was a fire hydrant kind of guy who just came at you and punched you in the mouth.

Who set the bar at your position?

Duhe: There were several guys. Back in those days there were guys from the Steel Curtain like Jack Lambert and Jack Ham who were probably the most respected guys of my generation.

What defensive lineman did you admire growing up?

Duhe: I played defensive lineman up to until the pros, so when I was a youth I enjoyed watching guys like Merlin Olsen and Bubba Smith. Those guys were dominant.

What was the most memorable moment of your career?

Duhe: The most memorable moment of my career was the 1982 AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets. I had the game of my life, having three interceptions and a touchdown.

What did you do in the offseason to stay occupied?

Duhe: To be honest with you, I was a workaholic. I would constantly try to stay in shape and prepare for the upcoming season.

THE LAST WORD

Finally, a secure safety net
Andy Cohen In The Morning appears every Monday through Friday on Dolphins.com until the end of the season, except for the bye week. The column is posted each day at 6 a.m. When is the last time the Miami Dolphins had an elite safety? My mind races back through the years and, to be perfectly honest, I have to go all the way back to the 70s with Jake Scott and Dick Anderson to find a top-shelf player at that position. Brock Marion made the Pro Bowl one year, but really didnt do much other than that. Glenn Blackwood had some quality games in the 80s and Louis Oliver was pretty good in the 90s. But elite? Not really. And thats about it, clearly an area that has been void of superior talent for much of this franchises existence. Until now. Reshad Jones is about to change all of that. After watching him grow as a player, after evaluating what he did a season ago, it is clear to me and many others that Jones is on the doorstep of something very special. What better indication of that than the new four-year contract extension Jones signed during training camp? That really says all you need to know. I went out last year and showed Im one of the elite safeties in this game and I just want to continue to show that, Jones said. I definitely have the ball rolling in the right direction. Various services that evaluate such things had Jones ranked among the top five safeties in the league last season. You look at the numbers and they scream productivity: 94 tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. But youve got to go further than merely statistics to properly see what type of player Jones is becoming. You have to look closely at some of the plays he made. Youve got to examine his work ethic, his knowledge of the game and an inner confidence that has nothing to do with being cocky. How about that interception last season

Reshad Jones likes to pattern his game after perennial All-Pro Ed Reed.

against Buffalo? I still cant believe I made that play, Jones said. I do things sometimes and ask: How did I do that? How about the one-handed interception of a Tom Brady pass? For me to pick off Tom Brady, a future Hall of Famer, now, that was special, Jones said. Clearly, though, the thing I like most is that, based on all appearances, the best is yet to come. Jones is entering his fourth season. He is only 25 years old. He has emerged as a bona fide leader of this defense. Listen to his secondary coach, Lou Anarumo: The guy has done everything we have asked him to do. He has excellent ball skills. Hed be a heck of a wide receiver. I dont want to pin potential greatness on anyone. But, with this player, he has a chance. Jones looks around the league and sees some outstanding safeties. But it is perennial All-Pro Ed Reed after whom he likes to pattern himself. Because of Reeds smarts.

Because of his versatility. Because of all the big plays he makes. A lot of people say I have the potential to be another Ed Reed, Jones said. I just want to keep it going. Jones is a crucial component in this Dolphins defense. The front seven figures to be as potent as any front seven in the league. The cornerbacks, most of them new, have a nice mixture of experience and youth. But it is important to have a quarterback in the secondary, somebody to recognize what is happening, somebody who leads by example and provides a real comfort zone that the back of the defense is well covered. We have seen far too many times in the past how poor play at safety can ruin an otherwise solid defensive effort. We have seen missed tackles and botched interceptions. We have seen so many safeties come and go. But we have really never seen a player with an upside as great as Jones. Its all about being consistent, he says. I know I can play this game at a high level. I just want to do it every down. Ive really become comfortable at breaking down formations, seeing plays before they happen and knowing exactly where to position myself before the ball is snapped. This season, for Jones, is all about taking his game to the next level, about further cementing his reputation, about refining his game and, most importantly, about making game-changing plays. Veteran cornerback Brent Grimes has seen a lot of quality safeties during his six years in the league. He has played with some and has watched some from a distance. But he knows a good player when he sees one and it just took him one offseason program and a few weeks of training camp to know what Rashad Jones is all about. Some of the things he does is really impressive, Grimes said. If you are looking for a true safety that has the entire set of skills you need in a player, then you are looking at him. He has a chance to be really special. And for this franchise to have a safety like that is long overdue.
