Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid Warwick Center 140 910.962.3177 finaid@uncw.edu www.uncw.edu/finaid Hours: 8am-5pm

Scholarships & Financial Aid

The Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid is a resource and information center to help students achieve their educational goals. The Office guides students throughout the process of securing resources necessary to pay for their college education. A college education is one of the biggest investments and expenses one will incur in a lifetime. Financial aid is a mechanism used to accomplish this achievement. In order for the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid to determine a students eligibility for federal, state and most institutional financial aid, students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The application is available after January 1st each year and requires the parental and student tax information for the previous tax year. There are four basic sources of financial aid offered. The eligibility requirements vary for each. THE BASIC SOURCES OF FINANCIAL AID: Federal the federal government is the largest source of financial aid; some programs are based upon financial need and others are available regardless of a students ability to pay. State recipients of state funds must be a resident of North Carolina; students are automatically considered for aid upon completion of the FAFSA. Institutional need based aid is available in the form of grants, scholarships and loans to students with financial need as determined by the results of the FAFSA. Private - civic organizations, associations, clubs, foundations, churches, and businesses provide financial assistance for education expenses.

Financial Aid is available and consists of two different types: Gift Aid, which consists of grants and scholarships that do not have to be repaid and Self-Help Aid, which consists of loans and student employment. THE TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID: Grants provides assistance to students that have financial need. Grants typically do not require repayment. Examples are the PELL Grant, Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG), TEACH Grant, NC Need Based, and the NC Lottery. Scholarships awards to students based on high academic achievement, special talents or skills. Students are not required to complete the FAFSA for consideration of merit scholarships; however some scholarship may be based on academic achievement and financial need. Loans - a source of aid that must be repaid, usually with interest, after students graduate or stop going to school. The Department of Education administers all student loans through the William D. Ford Direct Loan Program. They also offer credit-based loans for Parents and Graduate students. Employment - a self-help program enabling students to work and earn money to help pay school expenses. Federal Work-study is a need-based program and eligibility is determined by the results of the FAFSA. If students are not able to participate in the Federal Work-Study program, job opportunities are available through Career Services.

Office of Transition Programs

The Office of Transition Programs provides a comprehensive array of programs designed to meet the unique needs of undergraduate students and parents from orientation through graduation. Programs generate an intentional connection for the students through engaging interactions with other students, faculty and staff. Orientation is designed to help you make a smooth transition to UNCW. You will learn what you need to know to make a successful academic and personal adjustment to UNCW. Class registration, placement testing, and information about services provided to students are integral parts of learning about a new place and a new experience. Convocation is the beginning of your academic career. It includes a short ceremony at the clock tower with the unveiling of the Class flag, a welcome from the Student Body President and the beginning of your first Trask Trek, one of the great UNCW traditions. Seahawk Links are UNCW students who assist incoming freshmen with the transition into college during their first semester. Seahawk Links serve as a mentor to these students through interactions in the classroom and assist new students with making connections to UNCW. Students are chosen based upon their involvement at the University, and their interpersonal, academic, and leadership skills. Every freshman, with the exception of students enrolled in the Cornerstone, the Honors Scholars or the Global Perspectives Initiative learning communities, will receive a Seahawk Link. Family and Alumni Weekend is traditionally held in the fall. Families of students and alumni are invited to the university for a weekend of games, food, entertainment and fellowship. We hope you will participate in this unique opportunity to experience life on campus and take advantage of being part of the SEAHAWK FAMILY! Commencement is the time we celebrate your wonderful academic achievements at UNCW and you receive your degree. Ceremonies are held in December and May of each year. Teal Bridge programs and Teal Bridge Mentors are charged specifically to help Transfer Students navigate the newness so that they can make the most of their time here. Although transfer students have been to college before, UNCW has its own culture, rules, regulations and resources; assisting with a successful transition is the goal of Teal Bridge.
