Composition requirements The composition of all Recycled aggregate (RA), Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and Recycled asphalt shall be tested in accordance with Clause 710 (MCHW1). Content of asphalt (mineral aggregate with bituminous binder) shall not exceed 2% by mass, and the content of other materials (Class X) including wood, plastic and metal shall not exceed 1% by mass. For further information refer to the WRAP quality protocols for the production of aggregates from inert waste and the WRAP quality protocol checklists and guidance notes for producers, specifiers and purchasers of sustainable aggregates. Furnace bottom ash shall have a particle size no larger than 10 mm.

Grading requirements The aggregate grading shall be within the limits below:

Sieve size (mm) 500 10 5 0.6 0.063

Notes:

Percentage by mass passing the sieve size shown 100 0 - 100 0 - 85 0 - 45 0-5

1. Aggregate sizes are expressed as d/D or lower limiting sieve size/upper limiting sieve size. 2. Test in accordance with BS 1377-2 (on-site) and BS EN 933-2 (off-site). 3. In addition to any grading requirements the maximum particle size of any fill material shall be no more than two-thirds of the compacted layer thickness.

Physical properties requirements

Acceptable limits Property Test method Lower Uniformity coefficient Plasticity index
Notes: 1. Uniformity coefficient is defined as the ratio of the particle diameters D 60 to D10 on the particle size distribution curve. D60 is the particle diameter at which 60% of the sample by weight is finer and D10 is the particle diameter at which 10% of the sample by weight is finer. 2. Subject to the surface level tolerances given in Clause 613 and sub-Clause 616.1 (MCHW1), material shall not be frost susceptible if it is used within 450 mm of the designed final surface of a road or paved central reserve, or 350 mm if the annual frost index of the site is less than 50. Material shall be classified as non-frost-susceptible if the mean heave is 15 mm or less, when tested in accordance with BS 812-124.

Chemical properties Material shall not be deposited within 500 mm, or other distances described in Appendix 6/3 of the MCHW, of concrete, cement bound materials, other cementitious materials or stabilised capping forming part of the Permanent Works if, when tested in accordance with TRL Report 447 either: (i) the water-soluble sulfate (WS) content exceeds 1500 mg of sulfate (as SO4) per litre (Test No. 1); or (ii) the oxidisable sulfides (OS) content exceeds 0.3 % of sulfate (as SO4) (Test Nos. 2 and 4). At least five samples of each material shall be tested for WS and OS. The mean of the highest two values shall be used for comparison with the limiting values. This also applies if six to nine results are available. If ten or more results are available, the mean of the highest 20% of the results shall be used for comparison with the limiting values. Material shall not be deposited within 500 mm, or other distances described in Appendix 6/3 of the MCHW, of metallic structural elements forming part of the Permanent Works if, when tested in accordance with TRL Report 447 either: (i) the water-soluble sulfate (WS) content exceeds 300 mg of sulfate (as SO4) per litre (Test No. 1); or (ii) the oxidisable sulfides (OS) content exceeds 0.06 % of sulfate (as SO4) (Test Nos. 2 and 4). At least five samples of each material shall be tested for WS and OS. The mean of the highest two values shall be used for comparison with the limiting values. This also applies if six to nine results are available. If ten or more results are available, the mean of the highest 20% of the results shall be used for comparison with the limiting values. The requirements in (i) and (ii) above shall not apply to metallic items protected by concrete and ancillary metallic items such as the tops of chambers and gullies. No further restrictions on chemical properties are specified. However, in certain circumstances, the Environment Agency in England and Wales, (or their equivalent in Scotland and Northern Ireland) will require that the construction activities will not lead to contamination of ground or surface waters due to leaching or spillages. For this reason you are advised to discuss, as a matter of routine, your intended application with the relevant regulatory authority. Assessment of the leaching potential is likely to involve laboratory testing to BS EN 1744-3, and/or BS EN 12457-3, and/or EA NEN 7375. In order to correctly assess acceptability, the test results will need an appropriate interpretation, which may take allowance of leaching processes in situ as opposed to in the laboratory. For further information on these issues download the Environmental Information Sheet.

Notes 1. The recycled and secondary aggregates listed have a specific or a general provision for use within the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works, and may be used as long as these materials meet the required properties for aggregates given above. 2. Burnt colliery spoil and Spent oil shale should be well burnt.
