You'd be crazy to t^e a car down that road," I was told. So I got information from, thie Federal Police about the Belem-Brasilia highway;between Belem and Araguaina. There was a detour of about 75 miles close to :

ina, about 600 miles.south, where the Jim Morelands work. I wanted Pat to see the interior, because of the possibility of our working there when we return to
Brazil.
That.trip:, Nov- 10-!l3, was sur^y the roughest trip I have ever made .or hope to make i. I would really hes itate about traveling 2 miles on such roads there in the States. The jprpblem was the construction on the highway prepcuring it for asphalting (to be completed all the way from Belem to Brasilia this yesu:, perhaps). I drove through a lot of 6-inch deep dust. There was sand that almost bogged the car down, and I did succeed in getting solidly stuck once. We went through big ugly muddy
strips where a lot of trucks and busses were stuck and
traffic was creeping through. A lot of the road was so badly-washboarded that the only possible speeds
were 15-mph or 50-mph. on the trip. There were around 40 detours
nothing to do but to leave the road, missing the cow and missing a man who was walking along the side. We travelled about 50 yards off the road through the brush
and then, surprisingly, landed back on the road. "Thank
God," 1 prayed. Our kids were crying. Pat hadn't said a word I We quieted the children and I got out to assess the damage. Right door and left front fender bashed in, lisft r\anning board and rear-view mirrow broken up, 2 flat tires. For all I knew, we were miles from ?>owhere.
The first man who stopped loaned us his car, and told us where a tire repair shop was (1 mile away).
1/2 hour later? a group of people stopped us to take a man who had stabbed himself^ to the hospital. I had a chance to witness to him and to his family. We'll tell
you more when we see you.

We took the 2:40 a. m. Varig airlines flight from Belem to IVIiami on April
9, arriving in Miami 6 hours later. Froi-n there we flew to Atlanta and finally arrived in Evansville, Indiana, where Pat's folks met as. It was snowing and cold . Fairfield, Illinois got her biggest snow of the winter that night--less than an inch. That was just special for us. Vv e are glad that summer is ahead. Finally I found a car that should give -is good service on our many travels and should re-sell well at the end of the year. The Chevy Bel-Air seems extra
large in comparison with our VW'". we paid for it in January, '72. We sold the VW in Brazil for $84 less than

last few months. In January I preached a revival at Castanhal (city about 3C miles away). --One
conversion and one re-dedication... We finished
up the 60C chorus books, which are now being used in the churches. The young people partici pated strongly in almost every phase of its prep
aration. . , Cur trio--Pat, Celso & I--recorded several songs at a studio for use over the radio

I did.
So I made an appoint
So I gave up on him.. . Youth retreat on Carnival day March 6 was planned entirely by Brazilians. About 65 youth present... Philip had his 1st birthday March 7... I turned the youth class over to 3 young people who will alternate teaching it. There is a real good spirit among the youth... Programmed Bible study by extension classes began in March with over 70 students in the Beiem area. Hooray!... A young couple turned their lives over to Christ and I baptized them in the swift waters of a creek. . , Two of Ceiso's friends gave themselves for the cause of Christ and were baptized by Celso and another young man, Raimundo. The two nsw converts--Renato and Haimundo Penha--are really thrilling in tneir sincerity and faithfulness. These boys are not brothers, except in the Faith. Praise God for them! May their kind increase, pray especially for Celso, who
is an important leader among the young people and in the Marambaia church.. . After two days of fever and chills, my fever shot up to 101 on March l5. Pat ran for neighboring missionaries' help. They all insisted that I go to the hospital. A blood test for malaria showed positive. So I spent 3 days in the hospital, have now taken the last of my medicine, and am feeling fine, . . AND NOW ? We will be leaving Fairfield this Friday and going to see my folks at Long Lane, Mo. From there we will go to Hutchinson, Kansas, which will be our furlough home. We have not yet found a house, but will let you know
our house address and telephone number when we do. I will be attending the
Kiamichi Clinic and Pat and children will go to the Women's Clinic at Ozark Bible College in Joplin. We look forward to seeing many friends.

Most of you know, through the previous newsletter, what we have been doing thus far in the U,S, People keep asking me how I am enjoying my vacation! Pat and I do hope to take a few days, perhaps in July, to visit her sister Glenda & family in New Mexico, passing through my young childhood home in Trinidad, Colorado, Aside from that, we are not exactly vacationing. There are a few
speaking dates which have not yet been confirmed. Those dates which have been

Right now I would like to say a thing or two about our financial system. All gifts c contributions received by us or vy cn.r forwarding agent, unless specified
Illinois bank From this account come "mission expenses", such as postage,
gas, printing, etc,, and contributions to the work in Brazil, A recent example
in this last area is $230 which I sent to cover the cost of certifying some Gospel films which were recently purchased for the missionaries' use there. Also from the mission account comes our salary, which is set by the South Hutchinson Christian Church and is withdrawn from the account monthly and placed in our
personal account.
Since our return, the sponsoring church has insisted on increasing our salary
from $325 monthly to $450 monthly. They also wanted us to re-enter a health insurance plan, which we had to drop last year because of rising costs. They
also wanted us to get some basic life insurance protection. We now have both

Pray that we may find housing there and that we may follow boldly in God's direction. We do not plan to build a build ing and will not likely begin by holding church meetings.
* Develop musical & evangelistic calling group. This is a dream. Pray that God can find the right persons for such a group. This group could help start new churches and strengthen established works. This group cannot possibly happen without great faith and prayer on the part of many.
* Teach homiletics (how to preach) in the Bible ex tension centers. Pray for this work of training leaders.
