CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT #CA2013AUG30 ________________________________________________________________________ Short Title: The Addition of Senators to the Senate Sponsored By: Representative Tarah

Taylor Co-Sponsored By: Senator John Locke, Senator Elfego Chavez First Reading: August 30th 2013 ________________________________________________________________________ WHEREAS Section 2, Clause 3 of the Bylaws state: The Legislative Branch shall have the delegated power and privilege to enact all measures necessary and proper for the general welfare of the Student Body. the UHD student population is diverse in the manner in which they experience the university and receive instruction, the SGA Senate must be as well; to properly represent and serve them, the addition of a Senator of UHD Northwest, Senator of Online Students, and Senator of Graduate Students is necessary the addition of two (2) Senators of UHD Northwest, an Online, and a Graduate Student Senator is imperative to allow the ideas, thoughts and grievances of UHD students to be voiced in the Senate although these students are a diverse constituency, their attributes are not the same as a student that would be included in a Diversity Committee. These Senators do not represent a human characteristic, perspective, or background. These Senators represent a difference in learning methods

BE IT RESOLVED that the new positions for Senator of UHD Northwest, Senator of Online Students, and Senator of Graduate Students be placed on the ballot for the 2014 Student Government election THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE STUDENT SENATE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON-DOWNTOWN THAT the University of Houston-Downtown Student Government Association Constitution be amended under Article IV, Section 2 and 12 AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED THAT the following content be amended under Article IV ARTICLE IV, SECTION 2 OF THE SGA CONSTITUTION OF UHD currently reads as follows: Section 2: The first class of legislator(s) shall be composed of two Senators from each academic college elected by the student body during elections. The two candidates who receive the highest quantity of votes shall become Senators for their respective college.

ARTICLE IV, SECTION 2 OF THE SGA CONSTITUTION OF UHD should be amended to read as follows: Section 2: The first class of legislator(s) shall be composed of two Senators from each academic college and two Senators of UHD Northwest, one Senator of Online Students, and one Senator of Graduate students elected by the student body during elections. The two candidates for Senators for their respective college who receive the highest quantity of votes shall be elected.

ARTICLE IV, SECTION 12 OF THE SGA CONSTITUTION OF UHD currently reads as follows: Section 12: Qualifications for becoming a Senator Must be a declared major at the academic college that they intend on representing. Candidates who have not declared their major shall represent the University College. Must have attended the workshop of Roberts Rules of Order Newly Revised that is approved by the President. Must have and maintain at least a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 during their tenure.

ARTICLE IV, SECTION 2 OF THE SGA CONSTITUTION OF UHD should be amended to read as follows: Section 12: Qualifications for becoming a Senator Senators for academic colleges must be a declared major at the college they intend on representing. Candidates who have not declared their major shall represent the University College Senators for UHD Northwest must be a part time or full time student on the Northwest campus Senator for Online Students must be identified by their advisor as a completely online student Senator for Graduate Students must be enrolled in any UHD Graduate program Must have attended the workshop of Roberts Rules of Order Newly Revised that is approved by the President. Must have and maintain at least a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 during their tenure.

Be Voted Upon by the Student Government Association Legislative Branch at the University of Houston- Downtown. WE, THE UNDERSIGNED support these amendments to the Bylaws and call upon all members of the Legislative Body to support this initiative.
